Vegetable Veggie Chips

Vegetable Chips are usually chips prepared with root vegetables, deep-fried or baked. Today, I sued my air fryer to make a delicious and crispy batch.

You can use many different vegetables: carrots, turnips, parsnips, parsley root, beets, radishes, artichokes, taro, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, onion, and even garlic.

They are all prepared the same way, so if you want to switch out of the vegetables in the recipe card below, the recipe will be the same.

The main advantage of preparing the veggie chips in the air fryer vs. deep-frying is that you will save many calories and intake fat. The air fryer uses minimal oil, but you will get a great batch of crispy veggie chips.

Air Fryer Veggie Chips

Today, I made a simple batch of Air Fryer Veggies. I went to the grocery store and picked up a couple of beets and sweet potato varieties, which make for a great and pretty bowl of homemade chips.

The key to this recipe is to ensure each chip has a thin layer of olive oil, which will help crisp up the chips.

Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Veggie Chips

Veggie Chips
  • Sweet Potato
  • Purple Potato
  • Red Beet
  • Golden or Yellow Beet
  • Olive Oil
  • Sea Salt or Regular Salt

Start by slicing the potatoes with a mandoline, about 1/16 inch thick. After you slice them, soak them in a bowl of water. Soak for about 30 minutes. Dry them with either a kitchen towel or paper towels.

Then cut the beets with your mandoline, about 1/16 inch thick. Add both the beets and dried-off sweet potatoes to a large bowl. Add the olive oil and salt. Mix well, coating all of the sliced vegetables.

Veggie Chips

Preheat your air fryer to 320 degrees F, air fryer setting, for about 5 minutes. Then add your vegetables so they are a single layer. You’ll probably need to do several batches, depending on what air fryer you own. Flip the vegetables every 5 minutes until they are crisped up. This usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Do air fryers make good chips?

Yes, they make a great chip with hardly any oil. This is so much healthy than the store-bought or deep-fried versions.

The air fryer also does an amazing job at making food crisp. With just a few drops of olive oil, you will get a great batch of homemade vegetable chips!

Why do you Soak potatoes in water before air frying?

The reason to soak the sweet potatoes in this recipe is that the water will remove some of the starch from the potatoes.

The removal of the starch will help your Air Fryer Veggie Chips become nice and crispy. You can soak anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for the best results.

Why are my Air fryer chips soggy?

Your chips are probably soggy because you did not dry them off after soaking them in the water.

Also, make sure that your chips are put into the air fryer in a single layer. You really want to make sure the hot air from the air fryer can circulate your food.

Another pro tip would be to shake your basket frequently during the cooking process so all of the chips have the same amount of time under the heating element.

Tips for Making The Perfect Air Fryer Veggie Chips:

  • Use a mandoline to help you make even slices for the best results. This will also make your potato chips or veggie chips amazing!
  • Soak your sweet and purple potatoes in the water, then dry them off completely.
  • Use a pair of tongs or your hands to mix the olive oil with the sliced chips, as you want to ensure they are well coated.
  • Shake frequently for the best results.
  • Check your chips frequently since all air fryers cook at different times.

Which Vegetables make the best chips?

Anything that you love roasted will be amazing, some of the most popular are:

  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Parsnips
  • Taro
  • Batata
  • Beets
  • Carrots

  • What are air fryer veggie chips?
    • Air fryer veggie chips are thinly sliced vegetables that are cooked in an air fryer until they are crispy, offering a healthier alternative to traditionally fried chips.
  • Which vegetables work best for chips in an air fryer?
    • Root vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets work well. Other vegetables like zucchini, kale, and Brussels sprouts can also be used.
  • How do I prepare the vegetables?
    • Wash and peel (if necessary) the vegetables, then slice them thinly using a mandoline slicer or sharp knife. Pat them dry to remove any excess moisture before seasoning or adding oil.
  • Do I need to use oil?
    • A light coating of oil helps achieve a crisp texture and enhances flavor. However, one of the benefits of an air fryer is that you can use significantly less oil than traditional frying methods.
  • What seasonings can I use?
    • Basic seasonings like salt, pepper, garlic powder, or paprika work well. You can also get creative with flavors like rosemary, thyme, cayenne, or even cinnamon for sweet potato chips.
  • How long do they take to cook?
    • Cooking times can vary based on the type of vegetable and thickness of the slice, but most veggie chips will take between 8-20 minutes. Always keep an eye on them to avoid overcooking.
  • How do I know when they’re done?
    • The chips should be crisp to the touch and have a golden-brown color. It’s a good idea to shake the basket or turn the chips halfway through the cooking process to ensure even cooking.
  • Can I stack the veggie slices in the air fryer?
    • For best results, it’s recommended to place them in a single layer. Overlapping or stacking might result in uneven cooking.
  • How should I store leftover veggie chips?
    • Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature. They’re best consumed within 2-3 days for optimal freshness and crunch.
  • Are air fryer veggie chips healthier than store-bought chips?
  • Generally, yes. Air frying uses less oil than traditional frying methods, which can reduce the overall calorie and fat content. Moreover, making them at home allows you to control the ingredients and avoid any preservatives or excessive salt.
