How To Cook Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips In The Air Fryer
Cooking Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips in an air fryer is a great way to achieve a crispy, flavorful snack with less oil than traditional deep-frying. Here’s a simple method to prepare them:
Wash and dry your potatoes. If you want you can remove the skin, otherwise slice your potatoes with either a mandoline or a sharp knife.
Place your potato slices into a bowl of cold water, and add the vinegar and seasonings. This will help remove the starch from the potatoes, which will help them crisp up.
Drain the potatoes and pat dry them properly; spread them over a paper towel in a single layer, and leave them to air dry for 10 minutes. (The potato slices should be dried completely to get crispy and crunchy chips)
Season the potato slices with oil and salt. LIne your air fryer basket with parchment paper.
Preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 350 degrees F / 180 degrees C. Place the potato slices in the air fryer basket without overcrowding
Cook for 8-10 minutes until crispy.
Recipe Variations
Recipe Variations for Air Fryer Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips
- Herb-Infused Chips: Add dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or dill to the salt before seasoning the chips. This gives a fragrant twist to the classic salt and vinegar flavor.
- Spicy Kick: For a spicy version, sprinkle a little cayenne pepper or chili powder along with the salt. This adds a nice heat that complements the tanginess of the vinegar.
- Garlic Salt and Vinegar Chips: Use garlic salt instead of regular salt for a garlicky flavor profile. This is great for garlic lovers and adds an extra dimension to the chips.
- Cheesy Vinegar Chips: After air frying, while the chips are still hot, sprinkle them with a little grated Parmesan cheese or nutritional yeast for a cheesy twist.
- Sweet and Vinegar Chips: Add a light sprinkle of sugar along with the salt. This creates a subtle sweet and sour experience that’s quite unique.
- Lemon Zest Chips: After cooking, add a bit of lemon zest for a citrusy, refreshing flavor. This works especially well in the summer months.
- Smoked Salt Chips: Use smoked salt instead of regular salt for a smoky flavor, which adds a nice depth to the vinegar tang.
- Barbecue Style: Combine barbecue seasoning with the salt for a BBQ flavor. This variation is perfect for those who enjoy a smoky, sweet, and tangy combination.
- “Everything Bagel” Chips: Season the chips with an “everything bagel” seasoning blend before air frying, giving them a savory, oniony, and garlicky taste.
- Curry Flavored Chips: Add a touch of curry powder to the salt for an Indian-inspired flavor. This works wonderfully with the tang of the vinegar.
Each of these variations adds a unique twist to the classic salt and vinegar potato chips, allowing you to experiment and find your favorite flavors right from your air fryer!
Pro Tips
- Choose the Right Potatoes: For the crispiest chips, use starchy potatoes like Russets. They tend to fry better and achieve a good crunch.
- Slice Evenly: Use a mandoline slicer for uniform thinness. Evenly sliced potatoes will cook at the same rate, ensuring consistent crispiness.
- Soak in Vinegar: The longer you soak the slices in vinegar, the stronger the flavor. For a milder taste, reduce the soaking time.
- Thoroughly Dry the Slices: After soaking, ensure the potato slices are completely dry before air frying. Excess moisture can steam the chips, preventing them from getting crispy.
- Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Cook the chips in batches if necessary. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking and less crispy chips.
- Shake or Flip Regularly: To ensure even cooking and browning, shake the basket or flip the chips a few times during cooking.
- Watch Closely: Keep a close eye on the chips, especially towards the end of cooking, as they can go from perfectly crisp to burnt quickly.
- Season While Hot: Season the chips with salt immediately after they come out of the air fryer. The heat helps the seasoning stick better.
- Adjust Cooking Time: Depending on your air fryer model and the thickness of the chips, you may need to adjust the cooking time. Start checking for doneness a few minutes before the recommended time.
- Cool Before Eating: Let the chips cool for a few minutes after air frying. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.
- Storage: If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container. Keep in mind they are best enjoyed fresh and might lose some crispiness when stored.
By following these pro tips, you’ll be able to create delicious, homemade Air Fryer Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips that are perfectly crispy and packed with flavor.
Faq
What type of potatoes should I use for making chips in the air fryer? Starchy potatoes like Russets are ideal for making chips as they crisp up nicely. Their low moisture content helps achieve a crunchy texture.
How thin should I slice the potatoes? Aim for very thin slices, about 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. A mandoline slicer is useful for getting consistent, even slices.
Do I need to soak the potato slices in vinegar? Yes, soaking in vinegar is essential for infusing the chips with that classic salt and vinegar flavor. The longer you soak, the stronger the vinegar taste will be.
Is it necessary to peel the potatoes? Peeling is optional. Leaving the skin on can add extra nutrients and texture, but peeled potatoes will give you a more classic chip appearance.
How do I prevent the chips from sticking to the air fryer basket? Lightly greasing the air fryer basket with cooking spray or oil helps prevent sticking. Also, don’t overcrowd the basket to allow proper air circulation.
Can I stack the potato slices in the air fryer? It’s best to arrange them in a single layer for even cooking. Stacking can lead to unevenly cooked chips.
How long does it take to cook the chips in the air fryer? Typically, it takes about 15-20 minutes at 360°F (182°C), but this can vary depending on the thickness of the slices and your air fryer model.
What’s the best way to season the chips? Season with salt while the chips are still hot from the air fryer. This helps the seasoning stick better.
How do I know when the chips are done cooking? The chips are done when they are golden brown and crispy. Be sure to check on them frequently as they can burn quickly.
Can I make these chips ahead of time? These chips are best enjoyed fresh. They tend to lose their crispiness over time, so it’s not recommended to make them too far in advance.
How should I store leftover chips? Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature. They may lose some crispiness upon storage.
Can I use other types of vinegar for flavor? Yes, you can experiment with other vinegars like apple cider vinegar or malt vinegar for different flavor profiles.

I fist made (I am English and we call them) Crisps some years ago in Iraq for ‘the chaps’ 🙂 cos I had tried a bag of the lcal variety and they were just plain and I thought I could do the same. I used a potato peeler to shave the slices very thin, much thiner than a Mandoline can and I deep fried then. They were well received but I yearned for a flavour, Cheese and Onion, same as Walkers. I even considered writing to them for some of their product to dust my Crisps with but realised sense.
I am not keen on the present, modernday tendancy for thicker Crips and prefer the type you got as a child. I believe the product started to go downhill when they changed the Salt in a twisted blue thing to a flat(ish) sealed thing that you had to rip open. I think the price of a 2oz bag of Crisps in my childhood was about threepence or just over 1p today and that was also the price of a bag of Chipos (English style) from the Chip Shop. I imagine this would have been around 1950ish.
I am going to try your recipe but I will cut my places the same as I did those one in Iraq. Not sure I will be able to make them quickly enough in an Airfryer though. They will get eaten as fast as they are made. 🙂
