So, you have been following my blog for a while, you know, I’m all about real food for real people. Because, I don’t throw away food, I serve it to my family and friends. So, today, I wanted to show you a very simple recipe, which needs no introduction by me. It’s one of the most popular recipes, “How To Make A Boxed Cake Mix In The Air Fryer.”
“It’s a very simple recipe, all you need to do is find a cake mix that you like. if you want homemade from scratch recipes, I have one for chocolate and one for vanilla. Both are equally awesome, although since I’m a chocolate person (really a chocolate lover, of all things chocolate), I would prefer the chocolate one on my birthday.
One of the best reasons to make the cake in the air fryer is that you really don’t have to watch it. You can set the time and forget about it, and it turns off by itself. And since today, I am having a birthday party, letting me worry about other things, is a luxury.
So, pick out your favorite cake mix. Then grab this fabulous Fat Daddio’s Pan, that is my absolute favorite and I use it both in the Instant Pot and Air Fryer (talk about double duty)
And remember to use a non-stick cooking spray to coat the pan, just as if you were making a regular cake. then follow the directions, and you will have a huge dessert hit at your next birthday party, function, or just as a great dessert in the middle of a hectic week.
Measuring accurately is essential for baking. Today I am going to show you the correct way for measuring all of your ingredients that go into any baking you do, whether it’s in the Pressure Cooker (Instant Pot), Air Fryer or conventional oven.
In the next few paragraphs, I will teach you how to accurately measure wet and dry ingredients, which will help you have a successful baking session.
If you didn’t grow up baking, then you are probably going to be shocked to realize that measuring dry ingredients and liquid ingredients call for two different types of measuring.
Precise measuring for baking is so important because each of the ingredients does a different thing when they are combined, baking soda reacts with the other ingredients and helps the dough item to rise, whether it’s a cake, cookies, brownies or cupcakes.
The dry ingredients (including flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, chocolate, etc.) you need to use a standard dry measuring cups, which are found here:
The easiest way to measure dry ingredients is to scoop them in, and then over the sink, use the back of the knife to scrape off the excess.
It is important to make sure that when you measuring flour that you don’t pat it down, otherwise you will end up with more flour than you need. What bakers do, is mix the flour before you measure it out, this way it’s not compacted down before you start your measuring. This goes back to what your math classes referred to as ratios since you are creating a chemical reaction.
If the recipe calls for “sifted flour” make sure that you sift the flour before you measure it.
The opposite is true if the recipe calls for “flour, sifted” which means that you measure the flour and then sift.
If you are measuring semi-dry ingredients, i.e., peanut butter,
I hope you and your family enjoy it!
This is the cake mix, that I found out works best in the Air Fryer. It was really moist, and delicious.
Make it, per the instructions on the package.
This is the bottom of the cake, notice it’s baked through.
Forgive my messy frosting job, it was fabulous though.

How To Make A Boxed Cake Mix In the Air Fryer
- Prep Time: 10
- Cook Time: 20
- Total Time: 30
- Yield: 6 servings 1x
- Category: Baked Goods
- Method: Air Fryer
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 1 cake mix, any type
- ingredients on above cake mix package
Instructions
- Make the cake mix, per the instructions on the package.
- Using non-stick (or olive oil spray) cooking spray, spray an air fryer safe pan (see my suggestion in the recipe instructions)
- Then set the air fryer safe pan with the cake mix inside of it into the air fryer. Set the time for 20 minutes at 320 degrees F.
Check the cake is it done? If it is done, pull the cake out and let rest of the counter, for frosting/decoration.
If it is not done, add another 5 minutes and check it. Is it done, if not repeat, until the cake is done?
Note: The exact time will depend on your air fryer wattage and the size pan you used.
- Note: To check the cake for doneness, stick a toothpick in the middle of the cake, if it comes out clean it is done. Remove from the air fryer.

Judy
Does the entire batter fit into the cake pan?
Laurie
It depends on the size of the pan.
Carol Whitman
Yes, it does. My 1st white cake is in the airfrier now!!

Can I use the basket that came with the air fryer ? Do I have 2 use a cake pan ?
★★★★★
Laurie
Do you mean just put the cake into the basket? No, you need something to put the cake in, (the batter) anything you can put in the oven is usually fine.
Noreen Rollins
What size was your pan to allow the entire amount of batter to go in, please?
Laurie
I made 2 cakes from the batter, I used a Fat Daddios Pan, size: https://amzn.to/308XBuO
Paula
Loved the cake! Do you have a recipe for egg custard for the air fryer.

My cake baked on top,but not on the bottom. I used a pyrex bowl to bake it in and it was a loaf cake. What did I do wrong ? What pan did you use?

Followed these directions exactly. Cake was getting to done on top but no the middle was still a lot of uncooked batter. Tried to turn it over and recook but the batter ran out. What do you recommend

The most important thing to make a cake successful in the air fryer is the cake pan, you can’t use the one that came with the air fryer accessory kit, it’s too thick, I use this one from Fat Daddio (and I have used it in all of my cakes)

This link does not take me to the Fat Daddio pan. Could you please check the correct item number?

Turned out great! I made this in my basket style air fryer. I used an 8” round fat daddio’s cheesecake pan like you have pictured and a whole devils food cake mix. I set it on 320° but had to keep adding more time. After 20 minutes the top had started to brown but the center was still runny. So I just kept putting it back in 3 min at a time until a toothpick was almost clean. Probably a total baking time of 30 -35 min. Let it sit and cool then removed from the pan. I did cut off just a few pieces on the top that raised up and made an odd shape. But then I just used a whole container of frosting and just covered the uneven cake top and you couldn’t tell. The texture was great and it tasted delicious! My husband loved it also!
Thank you!!

I used a 12 cup nordic bundt cake pan in our NuWave Air Fryer. I baked a chocolate cake using a box mix on 320 degrees for 25 minutes. It tastes awesome.

This is great! Except I was so excited to make it in my air fryer I poured ALL the batter in the pan. Then it took like 50 minutes, but I had to adjust the time and temp. Finally got mad that I put too much in and pulled it out cut the part that was starting to burn off and saw this time spot where it just wasn’t getting done. 380 for 10 minutes did it. But for real it was good!!!

Do you preheat the air fryer before putting the cake in to it to bake?
Laurie
No. I never preheat the air fryer for any baking.

Thanks for this. My son bought me different accessories for my Air Fryer last Christmas and I just haven’t used them but I did steak and shrimp for dinner this week and it was Amazing. My mom’s birthday is on the 21st and she just found out she is border line diabetic so I want to do her birthday cake in the Air Fryer. I will let you all know how it turns out!!

I baked a Betty Crocker chocolate cake in my ARIA air fryer. I used a square 8″ square corningware pan only using 1/2 the package and ingredients. Baked at 320 for 20 min, toothpick came out wet, I added 8 more minutes, the toothpick came out clean from the middle, I had melted some white choc chips w a pat of butter, splash of vanilla, and splash of canned milk in the microwave and poured it on the top while still hot; It seeped into the cracks and around the cake. Then I set it on a wire rack and cooled 30 min, cut a piece and fabulous!! It sort of made big crumbs that fell apart and were light and moist!! From now on, I’ll be making these cakes in the air fryer!!

I made a low carb Swerve Sweets chocolate cake mix . It turned out great. The funny thing was the air movement made a swirl pattern on the top. It looks like a rose. Planned to serve it without frosting , with low carb icecream , so presentation was great.

Most boxed cake mixes require the 13″ pan which is to wide for my fryer. Can I do two at a time using 2 rack placements?
Laurie
Yes, that will be fine.
Jackie
I made 2 layers, 2 pans at once. The top pan cooked perfect, about 12 minutes.
The bottom pan had to be moved to the top and cooked about 18 minutes total.
In the future, for 2 layers, I plan to cook 1 pan at A time.

I used the Strawberry Supreme Duncan Hines cake box in a bundt pan with same temperature, and the estimated time. It turned out great, I will definitely be making more cakes and hopefully brownies in the Air Fryer.

Always the air fryer option.

Hello, I just made a boxed carrot cake last night in air fryer, took a bit longer but came out wonderful, family loved it!! It took maybe 40 mins to bake so at 30 mins I put foil over top to stop too much browning.. Making another one Dark Chocolate tomorrow!
Carol
I used a form cake pan and know next time I can use the whole cake mix in the one pan and cook a little longer. Thanks for sharing.

I have a Instant Pot Duo Crisp 11-in-1 Air Fryer and Electric Pressure Cooker Combo, my oven broke so I got this . Any way its got Air Fryer button and Bake Button on it . Which Button do I use for this Recipe? I have 6 inch to 7 inch cake pans for it
Laurie
Use the air fryer button. If you are going to only cook with an Instant Pot and Air Fryer, I would recommend highly that you get one of both.
Susan
Hi Laurie this is the Instant Pot that I have that has the bake button and Air fry Button on it see link below for picture ..

This is the instant pot that I have https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/4e0b1f12-88e2-4671-96c4-13a4e1e52a16.0caf8a4eada6dce7de433e7711c374ec.jpeg
thats why I asked is it Air Fry button or Bake Button ? Because I have both button on my instant Pot

Do you use the air fryer feature or bake feature?
Jackie
My oven broke just weeks before my husband’s birthday. Every year, he just wants A chocolate cake with vanilla icing. At first, the broken oven wasn’t a big deal, since I’m fortunate to own an air fryer oven, until it was time to bake the cake. I was so happy to find this recipe. So, for a layer cake, even though my fryer is big enough for both pans, only the top pan cooked perfectly, in just 12 minutes. The bottom one had to be moved to the top, and put back in for another 8 minutes. So, I learned it’s best to cook 1 pan at A time, if doing more than 1 layer.

Can I put aside half a recipe that is mixed while the other half bakes, then bake it? Will the cake mixed survive waiting?
