This recipe is one of my classics- one that I always turn to when I’m looking to put an easy, flavorful and fuss-free meal on the table. It’s always a winner, and I know you’re going to enjoy it too!

- Perfect for the family: It’s perfect for the whole family! The simple, effortless flavors and cooking process make it a great family meal that everyone can put together.
- Customizable: You can also play around with the ingredients and seasonings according to your preference. It’s really easy to customize.
Ingredients For the Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas Recipe
- Chicken: I used boneless chicken breasts here to get those perfect, succulent strips. Choose skinless chicken, especially if you want to keep it healthy.
- Veggies: You’ll need a mix of peppers (I used green and red peppers) along with onions.
- Olive oil: To saute the veggies and chicken in. I would recommend using extra virgin olive oil.
- Lime juice: To tie all the flavors together and bring a beautiful tangy flavor to the dish.
- Fajita seasoning: To season the chicken and veggies. If you don’t have this, use a dash of garlic powder, cumin, oregano, salt and paprika. You could use taco seasoning too!
- Tortillas: To assemble the fajitas. I used flour tortillas, but you could also use corn tortillas or any gluten-free tortillas of your choice.
Variations and Substitutions
- To load up the veggies and to add lots of fiber to the fajitas, you can add other veggies like zucchini and carrots too!
- Swap the chicken breasts with chicken thighs if you want that tender, fall-apart texture.
- You could also use sirloin steak strips if you don’t have chicken or just want to try this with another protein. Just remember that it may take slightly longer to cook than chicken.
- To make a vegetarian version of the dish, swap the chicken with tofu strips. All you’ll need to do is press all the liquid out from a block of firm tofu and cut it into strips before using it for this recipe.
How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas
Slice time: Start by slicing the bell peppers and onions into even sized strips. Follow it up with chicken breasts.
Marinate: Transfer them all to a large bowl and marinate them in some olive oil, fajita seasoning a
Air fry time: Move the chicken and veggies to the Air Fryer basket, making sure you don’t overcrowd it. Air fry for around 8-10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked. Shake the basket halfway through the cooking time.
Assemble: Get the veggies and chicken outside and stuff them into warm tortillas. Top with your choice of toppings and serve immediately.
Tips & Tricks to Make Chicken Fajitas in the Air Fryer
- Make sure you don’t slice the veggies too thin. Air frying is a fast cooking process, and slicing them too thin will cause them to burn.
- Toss the veggies and chicken in the fajita seasoning and olive oil until they’re all well coated. Doing this is important to get the perfect texture and flavor in every bite.
- Don’t pile up the veggies and chicken in the basket. Adding too much will cause them to steam and turn soft instead of having that nice char on the outside. And of course, there’s always a risk of them being cooked unevenly too, without enough space for the hot air to move around the basket.
- To add a kick of heat into the dish, add some finely chopped jalapenos into the mix. A dash of cayenne or paprika should work great too.
- To make cheesy chicken fajitas, top the cooked veggies and chicken with lots of shredded cheese and pop it back again in the Air Fryer for 2-3 minutes or until the cheese is nice and melty.
Storage Instructions
Refrigeration: Refrigerate your leftover chicken fajitas in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
Freezing: I wouldn’t recommend freezing the fajitas, especially since the veggies can start to lose water and turn limp.
Reheating: To reheat the chicken fajitas, pop them in the microwave for a few minutes until they have warmed up nicely, or in the Air Fryer if you want them to have that bit of crunchy texture.
Serving Ideas & Suggestions
These Air Fryer chicken fajitas are incredibly versatile. You can top them with some guacamole, sour cream, cilantro lime crema or even just some chopped cilantro for a touch of freshness.
If you ask me, I personally LOVE the idea of topping it with some fresh salsa. I love making my mango habanero salsa and pineapple salsa in the summer months to use up all those beautiful fruits, and other times, I just stick to my salsa verde and Chipotle corn salsa.
FAQs
How can I know if the chicken is done cooking? While using a meat thermometer is the easiest way to check for the doneness of the chicken, we’re using thin chicken strips here, which get cooked in no time. Skip the thermometer and just cut through a strip to check if it is nice and cooked from the center.
What should I do if the chicken is not done cooking? If you feel the chicken is undercooked, pop it back again in the Air Fryer. If your veggies are already looking nice and crisp, get them out and just air fry the chicken strips.

20 Minute Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas
Description
Ingredients
- 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts,, thinly sliced
- 1 whole red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 whole green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 whole medium onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 tablespoon lime juice
- 1 tablespoon fajita seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt , to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Flour or corn tortillas, for serving
Optional toppings: sour cream, guacamole, salsa, shredded cheese
Instructions
- Begin by slicing 1-2 chicken breasts into thin strips.
- Slice bell peppers (a mix of red, green, and yellow) and one onion into similar-sized strips for even cooking.
- In a large bowl, combine the chicken and vegetable strips.
- Drizzle with olive oil and lime juice. This not only adds flavor but also helps the seasoning stick to the ingredients.
- Add fajita seasoning, which typically includes chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and paprika. Toss everything until it’s evenly coated.
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). This step ensures that the cooking process starts immediately and helps achieve a good char on the vegetables and chicken.
- Place the seasoned chicken and vegetable mixture in the air fryer basket. Try not to overcrowd the basket; cook in batches if necessary.
- Air fry for about 8-10 minutes, shaking the basket or stirring halfway through to ensure even cooking.
- While the chicken and vegetables are cooking, warm your tortillas (flour or corn) in the oven, on the stovetop, or even in the microwave. Warm tortillas are more pliable and won’t break when you roll them.
- Once the chicken and vegetables are cooked and have a nice char, it’s time to assemble the fajitas.
- Spoon the chicken and vegetable mixture onto the warm tortillas.
- Serve with your favorite fajita toppings such as sour cream, guacamole, salsa, shredded cheese, or fresh cilantro.
Equipment
- Cooking Spray
