Sweet potatoes are the most useful vegetable in my kitchen, and this post gathers the sweet potato recipes I make on repeat. They roast crisp, bake creamy, turn into chips and fries, and hold up in the air fryer better than almost anything else.

Every recipe below links straight to its full page with ingredients, step-by-step photos and printable cards. Whether you need a 15-minute weeknight side, a copycat steakhouse potato or a Thanksgiving casserole, start here.

Why Sweet Potatoes Deserve a Spot in Your Weekly Rotation

Sweet potatoes are cheap, filling and almost impossible to overcook. One medium potato delivers a full day’s worth of vitamin A plus fiber and potassium, and the natural sugars caramelize beautifully under high heat, which is exactly why they shine in the air fryer.

They also swing both ways. The same potato that becomes a savory, garlicky side on Tuesday turns into cinnamon-sugar fries or a marshmallow-topped casserole on Thursday. Keep a few on the counter and dinner is never far away.

Crispy Sweet Potato Fries, Chips and Tots

If you own an air fryer, this is where to start. These cook in under 20 minutes and come out crispier than the oven ever managed.

Outback Steakhouse Sweet Potato Fries — Thick-cut steak fries seasoned with garlic powder and a pinch of cinnamon, the sweet-savory combo Outback is known for.

Air Fryer Cinnamon Sweet Potato Fries — Dessert fries. Cooked in butter, then tossed in cinnamon sugar while still hot. Kids lose their minds over these.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries (

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Home Fries — Diced instead of sliced, so you get more crispy edges. About 18–20 minutes at 400°F and they’re ready for breakfast or dinner.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips — Thin slices crisp up in 5–7 minutes at 390°F. The trick is a wire rack over the top so they don’t fly into the fan.

Mandoline

Air Fryer BBQ Sweet Potato Chips — Same idea with a smoky barbecue rub. Watch the last two minutes closely; the sugar in sweet potatoes goes from golden to burnt fast.

Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Fries

Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Waffle Fries — A light oil spritz makes store-bought waffle fries noticeably crispier.

Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Tots

Air Fryer Frozen Sweet Potato Tots — 10–12 minutes at 400°F. The perfect party snack or lunchbox side.

Baked Sweet Potatoes, Steakhouse Style

A whole baked sweet potato is the easiest side on this list: scrub, prick, oil, salt, and let the air fryer do the rest. Here are four versions, from plain to fully loaded.

Outback Steakhouse Sweet Potato (Copycat Honey Butter) — Baked until creamy, split open and topped with brown sugar and whipped honey cinnamon butter, just like the restaurant side.

Longhorn Steakhouse Sweet Potato Recipe — Rubbed with olive oil for crisp skin and air fried at 400°F for 25–30 minutes. Leans a little sweeter and heavier on the cinnamon butter than the Outback version.

Air Fryer Steakhouse Sweet Potato — The generic steakhouse method: olive oil, sea salt, 30–45 minutes at 400°F, flipped halfway. Serve with whipped butter and brown sugar.

Air Fryer Weight Watchers Sweet Potatoes — The lightest option, with no added sugar and WW points listed right on the page.

Have leftovers? How to Reheat a Sweet Potato in the Air Fryer brings a cold baked potato back to crisp-skinned in 8–10 minutes at 375°F, no foil needed. It also has reheat times for fries, cubes, wedges and casserole.

Holiday Casseroles, Breakfast and Fun Sides

These are the recipes that get requested at Thanksgiving, show up at Sunday brunch, or save dinner when you only have a can in the pantry.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Casserole — Mashed sweet potatoes with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and pecans, topped with mini marshmallows and toasted at 320°F for 10–12 minutes. Make the filling a day ahead and bake it when the oven is full.

Boston Market Sweet Potato Casserole (Copycat) — Creamy sweet potatoes under a buttery brown-sugar streusel, baked in ramekins so everyone gets their own crunchy top.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Hash — Diced sweet potato with peppers and onions, crisp in about 20 minutes. Great for meal prep, and you can add eggs right in the basket.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Nachos — Waffle fries as the base, finished sweet with marshmallows or savory with cheese, salsa and jalapeños.

Air Fryer Canned Sweet Potatoes — Drain, pat dry, season and air fry at 380°F for 10–15 minutes. Caramelized edges from a can.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Noodles — Spiralized sweet potatoes cooked at 350°F for 5–8 minutes. A colorful, lower-carb swap for spaghetti.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Tempura — Battered slices with a light spray of oil, crisp in 7–10 minutes at 400°F and no deep fryer required.

Tips for Buying, Storing and Prepping Sweet Potatoes

  • Buy firm and smooth. Skip any with soft spots, wrinkles or sprouts. Medium potatoes of similar size cook evenly together.
  • Store on the counter, not the fridge. Cold temperatures turn the centers hard and change the flavor. A cool, dark cupboard keeps them for two to three weeks.
  • Cut evenly. Quarter-inch fries, half-inch cubes or paper-thin chips. Uneven pieces mean some burn before others cook through.
  • Don’t crowd the basket. A single layer with space between pieces is the difference between crispy and steamed. Cook in batches if you have to.
  • Preheat for fries and chips. Three to five minutes at temperature gives the outside a head start on crisping.
  • Prick whole potatoes. A few fork holes let steam escape so the skin doesn’t split.
  • Season sugar last. Cinnamon-sugar coatings go on after cooking; sugar burns at air fryer temperatures.

Sweet Potato Recipe FAQs

How long does a whole sweet potato take in the air fryer? About 30–45 minutes at 400°F for a medium potato, flipped halfway. It’s done when a fork slides in with no resistance.

Why aren’t my sweet potato fries crispy? Usually an overcrowded basket or pieces that were too thick. Spread them in a single layer, cut to a quarter inch, and give them a final few minutes at 400°F.

Can I cook frozen sweet potato fries without thawing? Yes. Frozen fries, waffle fries and tots all go straight into a preheated 400°F air fryer. Shake the basket halfway through.

Do I need to peel sweet potatoes? Not for whole baked potatoes, hash or chips. Peel for fries if you want a uniform texture, but the skin is edible and adds fiber.

Can I make sweet potato casserole ahead of time? Yes. Mix the filling up to a day ahead, refrigerate, then top and bake just before serving.

Are sweet potatoes healthier than white potatoes? They’re comparable in calories and carbs, but sweet potatoes bring far more vitamin A and slightly more fiber. Both are nutritious; it’s the toppings that change the math.
