Surprise, your guests this Len season with this very simple twist on a seafood boil. Steamed crab legs, steamed in butter and spices, they make for a great supper.
I love seafood, as many of you know, I grew up in Boston, surrounded by fisherman uncles, and they were always kind enough to drop off some of their catch to my mom. She would make amazing dishes. But, being from Boston, and them fishing in Boston, I would always get good old New England seafood, which included, lobsters, cod, haddock, clams, mussels and other fish native to New England. When, I married my husband, a good old Midwestern boy, and went to live there, I was shocked to find out that there was a whole new world out there for seafood. The supermarkets were stocked with salmon, crab legs, catfish, and walleye.
As most of you already know, I’m an adventurous gal, with a love of cooking, so I accepted these challenges with the new cuisine and started making up recipes to adapt my mother’s recipes with local fish. One of the weirdest things was walking into a supermarket, and literally seeing crab legs, sticking out of a bag in the seafood section. I remember thinking, seriously people eat these? They look so crazy.
As I tried crab legs for the first time, I noticed that they taste a lot like lobster. So, in true New England fashion, I used butter and water to steam them. With a few herbs, they came out fabulous. Today, I used my Instant Pot, to steam them, and they were fabulous.

Add a little butter, water, and salt.

Pressure Cooker, Instant Pot, Steamed Alaskan Crab Legs
- 3-4 pounds Alaskan crab legs
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
Start by pouring the water and salt into the Instant Pot.
Then add your steamer basket.
Place the crab legs into the steamer basket.
Add the lid on the Instant Pot, making sure the vent is in the "sealing position"
Set the time using manual high pressure for 4 minutes.
When the time is up, do a quick release.
When the pin has dropped, and all of the pressure has been released, open up the Instant Pot.
Plate, serve and enjoy!
