KFC Macaroni and Cheese Ingredients

Ingredients for Copycat KFC Mac and Cheese: macaroni, cheese, milk, butter, and more.
  • Elbow macaroni: Classic elbow macaroni, the base for creamy mac.
  • Whole milk: Rich whole milk adds creaminess and flavor.
  • Powdered milk: Boosts the cheesy richness.
  • Cornstarch: Helps thicken the creamy cheese sauce.
  • Dry ground mustard: Adds a subtle tangy flavor.
  • Velveeta: Velveeta brings smooth, melty, creamy cheese texture.
  • Shredded sharp cheddar cheese: Sharp cheddar enhances the cheesy flavor with zest.

How To Make KFC Mac and Cheese

Stirring milk, powdered milk, and cornstarch in a saucepan over medium heat to thicken.

Step One: Start by boiling a pot of salted water. Add elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions (usually 7-8 minutes). Drain and set aside.

Step Two: In a medium saucepan, combine whole milk, powdered milk, and cornstarch. Stir constantly over medium heat until it begins to thicken.

Stir in dry ground mustard, Velveeta cubes, and shredded sharp cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth.

Step Three: Mix in dry ground mustard and stir to combine. Then, add Velveeta (cut into small cubes) and shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Stir until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Step Four: Add the cooked elbow macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat the pasta evenly. Serve immediately as a comforting side dish or main meal, and enjoy your homemade KFC-style mac and cheese!

Alternative Cooking Methods, Air Fryer and Crockpot

  • Air Fryer: For a quicker and crispier alternative, you can make KFC-style mac and cheese in the air fryer. Simply assemble the mac and cheese as usual, then bake it in a preheated air fryer at 350°F for 10-15 minutes until golden and crispy on top.
  • Crockpot: To make a creamy, slow-cooked version, combine all ingredients in a crockpot and cook on low for 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally. The slow cooking allows the flavors to meld together for an ultra-creamy mac and cheese.

Copycat KFC Macaroni and Cheese Recipe Tips

  • Use Whole Milk: For the creamiest texture, make sure to use whole milk. It adds richness and helps the cheese melt smoothly.
  • Velveeta is Key: Velveeta is essential for the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Don’t substitute with regular cheddar, as it won’t give the same creamy consistency.
  • Stir Constantly: When cooking the milk mixture, stir constantly to avoid burning and ensure a smooth sauce.
  • Perfect Consistency: If the sauce is too thick, add a splash of milk to thin it out. If it’s too thin, add a little more cornstarch to thicken.
  • Don’t Overcook the Pasta: Be sure to cook the pasta al dente so it doesn’t become mushy when mixed with the cheese sauce.
  • Add Extra Cheese: For an even richer flavor, consider adding extra shredded cheddar on top and broiling for a crispy finish.

Storing

  • Storing: Store your Copycat KFC Macaroni and Cheese in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Make sure it’s completely cooled before sealing to avoid condensation.
  • Freezing: For long-term storage, freeze the mac and cheese in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. When freezing, ensure it’s tightly sealed to prevent freezer burn.
  • Reheating: Reheat your mac and cheese on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of milk to restore its creamy consistency. Alternatively, you can microwave it in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, to prevent it from drying out.

KFC Macaroni & Cheese Recipe Faqs

Can I make this recipe ahead of time? Yes! You can prepare the macaroni and cheese in advance, store it in the fridge, and reheat it when you’re ready to serve.

Can I use a different type of cheese? While Velveeta and sharp cheddar are key to achieving the creamy texture and flavor, you can experiment with other cheeses like Monterey Jack or mozzarella, but it will alter the taste and texture slightly.

How do I make the sauce thicker? If the sauce is too thin, simply add a bit more cornstarch, or cook the sauce a little longer to reduce it to your desired thickness.

Can I make this recipe spicier? For a spicy twist, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the cheese sauce to give it a little heat.
