Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Onion Petals
The air fryer is a great appliance to have in the kitchen. Not only does it make delicious fried food, but it’s also a health-conscious option. You can make all kinds of things in the air fryer, including onion petals. Here’s what you need to make them:
- Sweet Onions: While we went with a Viviladia Onion, you can use any of your favorite onions, including Red Onions, White Onions, or even Walla Walla.
- All-Purpose Flour: You can also use gluten-free all-purpose flour, which is an excellent option if you want to make this gluten-free.
- Eggs: This creates the batter. If you want an egg-free option, feel free to use a substitute, such as Just Egg.
- Bread Crumbs: Another place that you can make this is either gluten-free, by using Gluten-Free Bread Crumbs, or make this Keto (or low-carb) by using ground pork rinds.
- Sweet Paprika: Adds a bit of bitterness to the onion petals.
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- Cajun Seasoning: A touch of spice to the dish. Adds a bold and spicy taste to your Onion Petals.
- Cooking Spray
How To Make Air Fryer Onion Petals
Start by cutting the top and bottom off the onion. Cut the onions into petals.
Create your breading stations: In bowl 1, add the flour. In the second, add the eggs (whisk them with a fork), and in the 3rd bowl, add the breadcrumbs, paprika, salt, black pepper, and Cajun Seasoning.
Dip your petals into the flour, egg, and bread crumbs.
Spray your air fryer basket with cooking spray. And then add your coated petals into the basket, being sure not to overcrowd them. Spray your petals with cooking spray. Set the temperature to 350 degrees F, air fryer setting, and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden brown.

Tips For Getting Perfectly Crisp Onion Petals
Have you ever tried to make onion petals and ended up with sad, soggy things instead of crispy onion goodness? Yeah, us too. But no more! We’ve got a few tips to help you get perfect onion petals every time. Keep reading to learn how it’s done.
Coating: You must ensure that your onion petals are fully coated with all-purpose flour.
Cooking Oil: Make sure that you thoroughly coat your onion petals with cooking spray after placing them into the air fryer. The cooking oil will help the coating perfectly coat up. And gives you the taste of deep-fried onion petals.
Crowding: For best results, ensure that you do not crowd your air fryer basket. Otherwise, the onion petals will not crisp up. Leave lots of room around the onion petals, so they can perfectly cook up.
Flipping: Depending on what air fryer you own, you may need to flip the Onion Petals so that both sides perfectly brown up.
Making Air Fryer Onion Petals In An Air Fryer Oven: If you are using an Air Fryer Oven Model, make sure to place the tray on the bottom level, this way, the outside and inside cook up at the same time.
