Yes, you can cook frozen chicken breast in the air fryer without thawing it first, and it comes out juicy, golden and fully cooked in about 25 minutes. I make this at least once a week, usually on the nights I forget to move chicken from the freezer to the fridge.

I first shared this method in 2021. Since then I’ve cooked frozen chicken breasts in dozens of air fryers, and I’ve changed one big thing: I no longer season the chicken while it’s rock-solid. A short “thaw blast” first lets the oil and spices actually stick, so you get real flavor instead of seasoning that slides off with the ice.
This post covers exact times by breast size, the right temperature, how to tell when it’s done, and what to do with the leftovers. If you’re brand new to your machine, my complete guide to using an air fryer is a good place to start.

Why This Method Works
- No planning needed. The chicken goes straight from freezer to basket.
- Seasoning that sticks. Cooking the chicken bare for the first 8 minutes melts the ice glaze, so the oil and spices grip the surface.
- Juicy, not rubbery. A moderate 360°F cooks the center through before the outside dries out.
- Predictable timing. Times are matched to breast weight, and a thermometer takes out the guesswork.
- Meal-prep friendly. Cook a batch and slice it for salads, wraps and bowls all week.
The same no-thaw approach works for other cuts, too. See my guides for frozen chicken drumsticks and frozen chicken wings in the air fryer.
You can also make other frozen chicken products in the air fryer: FROZEN CHICKEN PATTIES, FROZEN CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS, FROZEN CHICKEN TENDERS, CHICKEN NUGGETS (CHICK-FIL-A COPYCAT), TYSON CRISPY CHICKEN STRIPS, and FROZEN CHICKEN WINGS all in the air fryer!
Ingredients for Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Breast
You only need a few pantry basics. Exact amounts are in the recipe card below.

- Frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts: Individually frozen breasts work best. If yours are frozen together in a block, the thaw blast in step 2 lets you pry them apart.
- Olive oil or avocado oil: A light coat helps the spices stick and gives the outside a golden color. Avocado oil handles high heat well if you like a deeper sear.
- Kosher salt and black pepper: Frozen chicken needs a little more salt than fresh, so don’t be shy.
- Garlic powder and smoked paprika: My everyday blend. Paprika gives the chicken that roasted color fast.
- Optional: Onion powder, dried thyme, Italian seasoning, or a pinch of cayenne.
Skip pre-marinated or breaded chicken here. Breaded breasts follow different times; use my air fryer frozen breaded chicken breast guide instead.
How to Cook Frozen Chicken Breasts in Air Fryer (Step by Step)
Cook frozen chicken breast at 360°F for 22 to 30 minutes total, depending on size, until the thickest part reads 165°F.

Step 1: Preheat the air fryer to 360°F (182°C) for 3 to 5 minutes. A hot basket starts browning right away. Not sure if your model needs it? Here’s whether you should preheat your air fryer.
Step 2: Thaw blast (8 minutes, no seasoning). Rinse off any heavy ice crystals, then place the frozen breasts in the basket in a single layer with space between them. Air fry for 8 minutes. If they were frozen together, separate them now.

Step 3: Oil and season. Pull the basket, pat the surface dry with a paper towel, and brush both sides with oil. Mix the salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika, then sprinkle it evenly over both sides.
Step 4: Finish cooking. Return the chicken to the air fryer and cook 14 to 22 more minutes (see the chart below), flipping once halfway.

Step 5: Check the temperature. Insert an instant-read thermometer into the thickest part. It must read 165°F (74°C). If not, add 2 to 3 minutes and check again.
Step 6: Rest for 5 minutes. Resting lets the juices settle so they stay in the chicken, not on the cutting board. Then slice and serve.
If your machine has several modes, use Air Fry, not Bake or Roast. My post on which button to use on the air fryer explains the difference.

How Long to Cook Frozen Chicken Breasts in Air Fryer (Time Chart)
All times are at 360°F (182°C, or 180°C on most Celsius air fryers) and include the 8-minute thaw blast. Thickness matters more than weight, so always confirm 165°F with a thermometer.
| Breast size | Thaw blast | After seasoning | Total time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (5–6 oz) | 8 min | 14–16 min | 22–24 min |
| Medium (7–8 oz) | 8 min | 16–18 min | 24–26 min |
| Large (9–10 oz) | 8 min | 18–20 min | 26–28 min |
| Extra large (11 oz+) | 8 min | 20–22 min | 28–30 min |
Basket-style air fryers usually land at the low end; larger air fryer ovens can need a few extra minutes. Tips for Juicy Air Fryer Frozen Chicken Breast
- Use a thermometer every time. Color and “clear juices” are not reliable on frozen chicken. 165°F in the thickest part is the only true test.
- Pull at 160°F if you’re confident. Carryover heat during the 5-minute rest will take it to 165°F.
- Leave space in the basket. Crowding traps steam and gives you pale, uneven chicken. Cook in batches if needed.
- Pat dry before oiling. Water from the melting ice keeps the oil from sticking.
- Don’t skip the flip. It browns both sides and evens out the cooking.
- Sauce at the end. Brush on BBQ or honey-based sauces in the last 2 to 3 minutes so the sugar doesn’t burn.
- Seeing smoke? It’s usually grease in the drawer. Here’s why your air fryer is smoking and how to fix it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Seasoning a frozen block. The spices end up in the drawer, not on the chicken.
- Cranking the heat to 400°F. The outside dries out before the center is safe.
- Cooking breasts of very different sizes together. Pull the small ones early or cook them separately.
Flavor Variations
Once you’ve got the method down, swap the spice blend:
- Lemon garlic: Lemon pepper, garlic powder and a squeeze of lemon after resting. For a from-fresh version, see my air fryer lemon garlic chicken breast.
- Buffalo: Toss sliced chicken in hot sauce and butter, like my healthy air fryer buffalo chicken.
- Italian: Italian seasoning and parmesan, or brush on dressing near the end as in my air fryer Italian dressing chicken.
- Fajita or taco: Chili powder, cumin and smoked paprika for tacos and burrito bowls.
- BBQ: Season as written, then brush on BBQ sauce for the last 3 minutes.
What to Serve With Air Fryer Chicken Breast
Keep the whole meal in the air fryer. Cook the side first and keep it warm while the chicken cooks.
- Air fryer steakhouse potatoes
- Air fryer steakhouse sweet potato
- Air fryer frozen peas
- Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus
Sliced chicken also works in Caesar salads, wraps, rice bowls and quesadillas. If you plan dinners ahead, it slots right into my weekly meal plans.
Storing and Reheating
- Fridge: Cool, then store in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days.
- Freezer: Freeze cooked, sliced chicken for up to 3 months. Lay slices flat in a freezer bag so they don’t clump.
- Reheat in the air fryer: 350°F for 4 to 6 minutes, until hot (165°F). A light spritz of oil keeps the outside from drying out.
- Microwave: Cover and heat in 30-second bursts with a splash of broth. It’s fast but softer.
Frozen Chicken Breast in Air Fryer FAQs
Is it safe to cook chicken breast from frozen in the air fryer? Yes. The USDA says meat and poultry can be cooked straight from frozen; it just takes about 50% longer than thawed. The chicken is safe once the thickest part reaches 165°F.
How to cook frozen chicken breasts in air fryer? Preheat to 360°F (180°C). Air fry the frozen breasts unseasoned for 8 minutes, then pat dry, brush with oil and season. Cook 14 to 22 minutes more, flipping halfway, until the center reaches 165°F. Rest 5 minutes before slicing.
How long to cook frozen chicken breasts in air fryer? 22 to 30 minutes total at 360°F, depending on size. A medium 8-ounce breast usually takes 24 to 26 minutes.
What temperature to cook frozen chicken breast in air fryer? 360°F (182°C), or 180°C on a Celsius dial. It’s hot enough to brown the outside but gentle enough to cook the thick center through before the edges dry out.
How long to cook frozen chicken breast in air fryer at 400? At 400°F (200°C), plan on about 18 to 24 minutes total: 6 minutes unseasoned, then 12 to 18 minutes after seasoning, flipping halfway. It’s faster, but the outside can dry out before thick breasts are done, so 400°F works best for small or thin breasts. Start checking the temperature early.
How long to cook frozen chicken breast in air fryer at 180? At 180°C, cook frozen chicken breasts for 22 to 30 minutes total, depending on size. That’s the same as 360°F, so the time chart above applies as written.
How do I air fry frozen chicken breast in Celsius? Set the air fryer to 180°C. Cook 8 minutes unseasoned, then season and cook 14 to 22 minutes more until the center reaches 74°C. For other foods, use my Celsius air fryer cooking chart.
Do I need to flip the chicken? Yes, once, halfway through the second stage. It gives you even color on both sides.
Why season after the first 8 minutes? Frozen chicken is coated in ice, so oil and spices slide right off. A short thaw blast melts that layer and lets the seasoning stick.
My chicken breasts are frozen together. What do I do? Put the whole block in for the 8-minute thaw blast, then pry them apart with tongs and continue.
How do I cook frozen chicken breasts in a Ninja air fryer? Use the Air Fry or Air Crisp setting at 360°F and follow the same times. In a Ninja dual-basket model, cook the chicken in one zone and a side in the other, then use Match or Sync so both finish together. Ninja’s higher-wattage models often run hot, so check the temperature 2 to 3 minutes early. Have a Ninja Foodi? See my Ninja Foodi frozen chicken breast recipe for the Foodi version.
How long do you cook frozen chicken in the air fryer? It depends on the cut. Boneless breasts take 22 to 30 minutes at 360°F. Smaller pieces cook faster and bone-in cuts take longer, so follow the guide for each: frozen chicken tenders, frozen chicken patties, or Real Good stuffed chicken.
Why is my chicken dry? It’s almost always overcooked. Start checking the temperature 3 minutes before the chart says it’s done, and don’t skip the rest.
