How To Make Air Fryer French Onion Cheese Bread
In a large skillet, add your butter, and then over medium-high heat, simmer until the butter is melted. Then add in your onions, cook for about 8 to 10 minutes, or until the onions are transfluent and softened. When cooking, add the garlic, and thyme, simmer until the onions are caramelized about 15 to 20 minutes.
Remove the onions from the heat, mix in the sugar, salt, black pepper, and mix until all of the sugar has been dissolved. Return the skillet to a medium to heat, mix in the balsamic vinegar, cook for another 5 to 10 minutes. Until the liquid has evaporated, remember to stir frequently not to burn the onions.
Slice your bread into slices, about 1 inch thick. Sprinkle the cheese on top of the bread, followed by a couple of tablespoons of the onion mixture. Set the bread into the air fryer and cook for about 6 to 8 minutes at 350 degrees F, air fryer setting, or until the cheese has melted.
Garnish with thyme right before serving.
Pro Tips:
Bread: You can use any bread. I used a classical French Bread that I cut into pieces, making for a great appetizer. But you can use sliced bread for more significant amounts.
Cheese: I used a traditional Gruyere cheese to replicate the flavors of a classical bowl of French Onion Soup.
Crowding: For best results, do not crowd the air fryer basket. Otherwise, the bread will not crisp up. The hot air needs to freely circulate around the bread, cooking it to perfection.
Parchment Paper: You do not need parchment paper, as the bread will not stick to the air fryer basket.
Air Fryer Oven: If you are making this recipe in an air fryer oven, place the bread on the lowest tray, this way, both the exterior and interior can cook to perfection. If you add it to the top tray, the top with gett burned, while eh bread will remain uncooked.
What Type of Bread Is Best for French Onion Cheese Bread?
As a rule, we always prefer the taste of artisanal bread in our recipes. But any high-quality French baguette will work – even croutons have been known to work!
Look for a more complex bread and a size that will work in your air fryer. Since all air fryers are different sizes, you may need to cut your bread to fit inside your air fryer.
Make-Ahead Instructions:
This is a great appetizer that you can make ahead of time; for best results, wait until right before serving to air fry up your bread. Nothing is as good as a fresh and warm French Onion Cheese bread, with all of the melted cheese.
For best results, make your onion topping and then place it into an airtight container until you assemble your bread.
