What Is A McDonald’s Egg McMuffin?
The first McDonald’s opened in California back in 1948, followed by the opening of restaurants worldwide as demand increased. Today, there are over 36,000 locations worldwide!
I’ve often been to McDonald’s and ordered a Sausage or Bacon McMuffin. So today, I thought I would make one in my air fryer, and they are so good!
The McDonald’s Egg McMuffin is a breakfast sandwich at all McDonald’s stores. The sausage patties are made with pork, and the muffin has eggs, cheese, and butter. The bacon egg muffin uses bacon instead of sausage. Customers can also choose an English Muffin instead of bread for their Egg McMuffin sandwich.
Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Copycat McDonald’s Egg McMuffin
Embark on a delicious journey using an air fryer to recreate the iconic McDonald’s Egg McMuffin right in your kitchen. Each ingredient in this list is key to replicating that classic, beloved flavor, combining simplicity with a touch of fast-food magic.
Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below, in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information.
-
English Muffins: The base of the McMuffin English muffins provides a soft yet slightly crisp texture. They are perfect for holding the fillings and getting that iconic toasty exterior.
-
Large Eggs: Essential for the ‘egg’ in Egg McMuffin, they provide protein and richness. Fresh, large eggs work best to mimic the original’s size and taste.
-
Canadian Bacon: This is the traditional meat used in a McMuffin, offering a leaner, slightly sweet and salty flavor compared to regular bacon.
-
American Cheese Slices: A slice of American cheese melts perfectly, adding a creamy and gooey texture that’s a staple in the classic McMuffin.
-
Butter: Used for lightly toasting the English muffins, butter adds a rich, savory flavor that enhances the overall taste.
-
Salt and Pepper: These seasonings are key to bringing out the flavors of the eggs and the entire sandwich.
These ingredients come together in the air fryer to create a breakfast that’s not just a quick, satisfying meal but also a delightful trip down memory lane for those who love the classic McDonald’s Egg McMuffin.

Place the eggs into a ramekin. Then add your sausage or bacon, cook for 5 minutes, flip the bacon or sausage, and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. When it’s time to flip your bacon, add the English Muffin to the air fryer and cook until all the ingredients are done.

Pro Tips
- This recipe will work with any Air Fryer Basket or Oven Model, although the cooking time will vary. This recipe can also be prepared and cooked in the Ninja Foodi, Instant Pot Vortex, Instant Pot Crisp Lid, and Mealthy Lid.
- Check on your eggs and bacon frequently during the cooking process. This way, all of the ingredients are perfectly cooked.
Recipe Variations
- Bread: This is a great place to use whatever you have. I have used bagels, croissants, biscuits, or even sandwich bread.
- Egg: Add anything you want to your eggs, including vegetables or diced cooked vegetables. Please make sure the eggs are fully cooked before removing them.
- Cheese: I used a simple slice of American Cheddar Cheese, but you can use anything you want, including some of my favorites: Gouda, Velveeta, or even Sliced Colby Jack Cheese.
- Breakfast Meat: Use anything from bacon, Canadian Ham, Sausage Patties, or Link. If you want to keep it as a Vegan Air Fryer Breakfast, you can also use Beyond The Meat Breakfast Sausage or vegan bacon.
Storing
These are great to make an easy make-ahead breakfast recipe. I usually prepare all of the ingredients the night before and then reheat them in the microwave.
How To Freeze Air Fryer Copycat McDonald’s Sausage McMuffin
You can make these delicious egg and sausage sandwiches for breakfast. I often make a batch on a Sunday and double the batch. Eat one part for that breakfast, and then freeze another set for a later day.
Please make sure all the components are cooled down before assembling them as a breakfast sandwich for best results. Then wrap the sandwiches up them individually in saran wrap and then a layer of foil. Put the wrapped breakfast sandwiches into a freezer bag.
You can cook frozen breakfast sandwiches right in the air fryer. Follow the instructions here:
How To Reheat McDonald’s Egg McMuffin In Air Fryer
Reheating a McDonald’s Egg McMuffin in an air fryer is a great way to revive its fresh-from-the-kitchen taste. Here’s how you can do it:
- Preheat the Air Fryer: Set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Preheating helps to ensure even reheating of the McMuffin.
- Prepare the Egg McMuffin: If it has been refrigerated, take it out and let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes. This helps in reducing the temperature gap and ensures more even heating.
- Wrap in Aluminum Foil (Optional): For a softer result, you can lightly wrap the Egg McMuffin in aluminum foil. This prevents the bread from getting too crispy and retains moisture. However, if you prefer a crispier texture, you can skip the foil.
- Reheat: Place the Egg McMuffin in the air fryer basket. Heat it for about 3-4 minutes. If it’s wrapped in foil, you might need to add an extra minute or two.
- Check and Serve: Open the air fryer and check if the McMuffin is heated through. Be cautious, as the fillings might be hot. Once heated to your satisfaction, remove it from the air fryer and enjoy.
Using an air fryer to reheat a McDonald’s Egg McMuffin is quick and efficient, and it often results in a better texture compared to microwaving. The air fryer revives the McMuffin’s warmth and crispness, making it almost as good as fresh.
