How to Make Air Fryer Tri-Tip Steak Slices

Step One: Pat dry with paper towels the tri-tip to help them brown properly.
Step Two: Rub the Tri Tip with olive oil, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and any additional seasonings you like. Make sure the roast is evenly coated.

Step Three: Set the air fryer temperature to 400 degrees F and let it preheat for 3-5 minutes. This will give your roast a great char on the edges.
Step Four: Place the seasoned tri tip in the air fryer basket. Set cook time for 6-10 minutes, flipping halfway through. For medium-rare, aim for an internal temperature of 130–135°F; for medium, 135–145°F.
Step Five: Remove the steak slices and let them rest for 5 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.

Juicy Air Fryer Tri Tip Steak Recipe Tips
- Bring to room temperature first: Let the tri tip sit out for 20–30 minutes before cooking for more even results.
- Pat it dry: Removing excess moisture helps create a better crust.
- Don’t skip the oil: A light coating helps the seasoning stick and promotes browning.
- Preheat the air fryer: Starting hot gives you a better sear right away.
- Use a meat thermometer: For perfect doneness, pull at 130–135°F for medium-rare or 135–145°F for medium.
- Rest before slicing: Let the steak rest at least 5–10 minutes so the juices stay in the meat, not on your cutting board.
- Slice against the grain: This is key for tender bites—tri tip can be tough if sliced the wrong way.
- Avoid overcrowding: Cook in batches if needed so hot air circulates properly around the steak.
Storing and Reheating Instructions
- Storing: Let the tri tip cool completely before placing it in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Reheating: Reheat slices in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until warmed through. Avoid overheating to keep the steak tender and juicy.

How long does tri tip take in the air fryer? It typically takes 15–20 minutes at 400°F, depending on thickness. Always use a meat thermometer to check for your preferred doneness.
What temperature should tri tip be cooked to? For medium-rare, aim for 130–135°F before resting. For medium, cook to 135–145°F.
Do I need to marinate tri tip first? Not necessarily. A simple seasoning blend works great, though marinating can add extra flavor if you have time.
Should I flip tri tip in the air fryer? Yes, flipping halfway through cooking helps ensure even browning on both sides.
Can I cook frozen tri tip in the air fryer? It’s best to thaw it first for even cooking. Cooking from frozen may result in uneven doneness.
Why is my tri tip tough? Overcooking or slicing with the grain can make it chewy. Always rest the meat and slice against the grain for tenderness.
Do I need to preheat the air fryer? Preheating helps create a better crust and more even cooking. Starting hot makes a noticeable difference in texture.

Great recipe! My whole family loved it. I do like my meat well done so after following your directions I lower the temp on my airfryer to 300 and let it cook an additional 12 minutes. It cooked just the way we like it. My roast was very tender and still juicy. I have never made a tri tip roast but I will be making it more often. It was fairly easy and mainly hands off cooking.
Thanks!

Do you know the wattage of the air fryer? Mine is kind of low powered at 1350 watts.

How long would you cook a 3 lb tri tip?
Diana G Rios
I had a 3.2 lb roast and cooked it an additional 12 minutes. I did lower the temp to 300 because the roast was already fairly browned. I have an airfryer toaster oven so I also lowered the rack on my oven and just allowed it to cook until it reached 165 degrees.
