What Is A Tri-Tip?
A tri-tip steak comes from the bottom of the sirloin. It has many names; one of them is Santa Maria Steak, which was named after Santa Maria, California, where it started to be popular. Other names are Newport Steak, Triangle Tip, Triangle Steak,
It was a local specialty at a Santa Maria Safeway store back in the 1950s, where it was seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic salt and then placed into the rotisserie, and it was well-loved.

How To Make Air Fryer Tri-Tip Steak Recipe
I always let my meat rest at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before cooking. For this recipe, I did not salt before, as I usually do, since I was making a garlic rub.
Start by dicing your garlic, into small pieces, add the olive oil to the minced garlic
Use your fork to make holes in the roast so that the oil and garlic can seep into it—about 10 pricks per side. Rub the mixture into the meat.
Rub the mixture onto both sides of the meat, and then refrigerate for about an hour before placing it into the air fryer.
Set the roast into the air fryer basket.
Set the temperature to 400 degrees F and the time to 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, check the roast. Then flip it and add another 15 minutes to the time.
Remove the roast from the air fryer basket and rest for about 15 minutes, so the juices move to the middle of the meat. This will ensure a good juicy piece of meat.
How to Cut A Tri-Tip Steak
The most important thing to remember when you are cutting Tri-Tip steak is to slice against the grain.
There are several reasons for this, but the most important for this is that you will get a more flavorful and tender steak. Because if you slice with the grain, you will get a chewier piece of meat.
Cutting against the grain shortens the muscle fibers and makes the tri-tip tender and delicious. Otherwise, you will get a chewer piece of meat.
How to Serve A Tri-Tip Steak
This steak or roast goes with anything. If you are eating it as part of a KETO or a low-carb diet, I will pair it with a simple kale salad. Otherwise, add some mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, or french fries.
This roast pairs with almost anything.

Great recipe! My whole family loved it. I do like my meat well done so after following your directions I lower the temp on my airfryer to 300 and let it cook an additional 12 minutes. It cooked just the way we like it. My roast was very tender and still juicy. I have never made a tri tip roast but I will be making it more often. It was fairly easy and mainly hands off cooking.
Thanks!

Do you know the wattage of the air fryer? Mine is kind of low powered at 1350 watts.

How long would you cook a 3 lb tri tip?
Diana G Rios
I had a 3.2 lb roast and cooked it an additional 12 minutes. I did lower the temp to 300 because the roast was already fairly browned. I have an airfryer toaster oven so I also lowered the rack on my oven and just allowed it to cook until it reached 165 degrees.
