I first shared this recipe back in 2017, and it is still the muffin my kids ask for most. They grab them warm right off the cooling rack, and I like mine with a hot cup of coffee before the morning rush starts. A little chocolate at breakfast never hurt anybody.

If you are new to baking in the air fryer, muffins are the perfect place to start. Below you will find the exact time and temperature, my best tips from years of air fryer baking, easy variations, storage and freezing directions, and answers to the questions readers ask me most often.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

  • Ready in about 30 minutes. Roughly 15 minutes of prep and 12 to 15 minutes in the air fryer — faster than waiting on a full-size oven to preheat and bake.
  • One-bowl batter. Everything mixes in a single bowl, so cleanup takes about a minute.
  • Small batch of 8. Perfect when you do not want a full dozen sitting around, and ideal in summer when you refuse to turn on the oven.
  • Kid-approved and grab-and-go. These work for busy school mornings, lunchboxes, and after-school snacks.
  • Bakery-style texture. The air fryer’s circulating heat produces fluffy centers and golden tops that look like they came from a bake case.
  • Everyday ingredients. Flour, sugar, an egg, milk, butter, and chocolate chips — nothing you need a special trip for.

If muffins disappear as fast at your house as they do at mine, keep my Air Fryer Banana Muffins bookmarked for the next time overripe bananas pile up on the counter, and my Air Fryer Blueberry Muffins for when berries are in season.

Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Muffin Ingredients

The full measurements are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post. Here is what each ingredient does:

Ingredients for air fryer chocolate chip muffins measured into bowls on a table — flour, sugar, egg, milk, butter, vanilla, and chocolate chips
  • All-purpose flour: The base of the batter, giving the muffins structure and a soft crumb.
  • Baking powder: The leavening that lifts the muffins so they bake up light instead of dense.
  • Granulated sugar: Sweetens the batter and helps the tops turn golden.
  • Egg: Binds everything together and adds richness. A room-temperature egg blends into the batter more smoothly.
  • Pure vanilla extract: Rounds out the flavor and makes the chocolate taste even better.
  • Milk: Keeps the crumb moist and tender. Whole, 2 percent, or a non-dairy milk like oat or almond all work.
  • Melted butter: Adds flavor and a soft texture. Let it cool slightly so it does not scramble the egg.
  • Chocolate chips: Semi-sweet is my default, but milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or mini chips all work. Minis distribute especially well in a small batch.

Substitutions and Swaps

  • Gluten-free: A 1-to-1 gluten-free flour blend swaps in with no other changes.
  • Dairy-free: Use your favorite plant milk and swap the butter for melted coconut oil or a plant-based butter.
  • Lower carb: Almond-flour batters behave differently, so rather than swapping blindly, start from my Air Fryer Keto Blueberry Muffins and stir in sugar-free chocolate chips.
  • Chip swaps: White chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, or chopped chocolate chunks all fold in beautifully.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Muffins in the Air Fryer

Whisking flour, baking powder, and sugar together in a large mixing bowl

Step One: Mix the dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and sugar.

Step Two: Add the wet ingredients. Add the egg, vanilla extract, milk, and slightly cooled melted butter. Stir just until the batter comes together — a few small streaks of flour are fine.

Folding chocolate chips into muffin batter with a spatula

Step Three: Fold in the chocolate chips. Gently fold them through the batter with a spatula. Save a small handful to sprinkle on top for that bakery look.

Step Four: Fill the muffin cups. Spray silicone muffin cups or an air-fryer-safe muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray, then fill each cup about two-thirds full so the muffins have room to rise.

Step Five: Air fry. Set the cups in the air fryer basket and cook at 320 degrees F (air fryer setting) for 12 to 15 minutes. If your model bakes unevenly, rotate the basket halfway through.

Step Six: Check for doneness. Insert a toothpick into the center of a muffin — it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs. If not, air fry in 1 to 2 minute bursts until it does.

Step Seven: Cool. Let the muffins rest in the basket for a few minutes, then move them to a wire rack. They release from the cups much more cleanly once they have cooled slightly.

How Long to Cook Muffins in an Air Fryer

At 320 degrees F, standard-size chocolate chip muffins take 12 to 15 minutes in the air fryer. Mini muffins cook faster — start checking at 7 minutes and expect 7 to 10 total.

Muffin SizeTemperatureTime
Standard muffins320 degrees F12 to 15 minutes
Mini muffins320 degrees F7 to 10 minutes

Two things change the timing more than anything else: your air fryer model and what you bake in. Metal muffin tins conduct heat faster than silicone cups, so muffins in metal are often done a couple of minutes early. The first time you make these, start checking at the 10-minute mark and write down what worked — every basket runs a little differently.

My Best Air Fryer Muffin Tips

  • Use room-temperature ingredients. A cold egg and cold milk can re-solidify the melted butter into lumps, which makes for an uneven batter.
  • Do not overmix. Stir just until combined. Overworked batter develops gluten and turns muffins dense and rubbery.
  • Fill cups two-thirds full. Any more and the batter can mushroom over the sides before the centers set.
  • Skip loose paper liners. The air fryer fan can lift an unweighted paper liner toward the heating element. Use silicone cups or a muffin tin — if you love paper liners, set them inside the tin so they stay put.
  • No long preheat needed. Unlike an oven, the air fryer comes up to temperature almost instantly. If your model insists on a preheat cycle, 2 to 3 minutes is plenty.
  • Check early the first time. Air fryer brands vary a lot. Test at 10 minutes on your first batch, then trust your notes going forward.
  • Top with extra chips. A few chocolate chips pressed onto each muffin before cooking gives you those glossy, melty tops.
  • Cool before unmolding. Warm muffins are fragile — a few minutes of patience keeps them from breaking apart.

What to Serve With Chocolate Chip Muffins

These are made for a hot cup of coffee or a cold glass of milk. For a rounder breakfast, add scrambled eggs and fresh fruit, or serve a muffin alongside Greek yogurt with berries. Hosting brunch? Build a baked-goods board with a batch of my Air Fryer Homemade Cinnamon Sugar Donuts and my Air Fryer Copycat Starbucks Vanilla Bean Scones — the spread looks like a coffee shop counter with almost no effort.

Recipe Variations

Bakery-style crumb top: Want a streusel finish? Borrow the quick crumb topping from my Air Fryer Copycat Panera Wild Blueberry Muffins — a couple of spoonfuls on each muffin before cooking works beautifully here too.

Nutty chocolate chip muffins: Fold in 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans along with the chips for crunch.

Raspberry chocolate muffins: Add 1 cup of fresh or frozen raspberries (fold frozen berries in straight from the freezer so they do not streak the batter).

Mocha muffins: Whisk 1 tablespoon of instant coffee granules into the dry ingredients for a subtle coffee note that deepens the chocolate flavor.

Peanut butter swirl: Swirl 1/4 cup of peanut butter through the filled cups just before air frying.

Protein muffins: Replace 1/2 cup of the flour with your favorite protein powder for a more filling snack.

How to Store, Freeze, and Reheat

  • Counter: Store cooled muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
  • Refrigerator: They will keep in an airtight container for up to a week.
  • Freezer: Wrap muffins individually in plastic wrap, tuck them into a freezer-safe bag, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature.
  • Reheating: Pop a muffin back into the air fryer at 300 degrees F for 2 to 3 minutes and it tastes fresh-baked again — warm center, melty chips and all.

No Air Fryer? Oven Directions

You can absolutely bake these in a regular oven. Preheat to 350 degrees F, divide the batter into a lined or greased muffin tin, and bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for a few minutes before moving the muffins to a wire rack.

Air Fryer Chocolate Chip Muffins FAQs

What temperature do you cook muffins in the air fryer? 320 degrees F (about 160 C) is the sweet spot. It is low enough for the centers to cook through before the tops get too dark.

How long do chocolate chip muffins take in the air fryer? Most models finish standard muffins in 12 to 15 minutes. Start checking with a toothpick at the 10-minute mark, especially the first time you make them.

Can I use a boxed muffin mix in the air fryer? Yes — prepare the mix as directed on the box, fill your cups two-thirds full, and watch the timing closely since mixes vary. I have full walkthroughs for Air Fryer Jiffy Box Mix Blueberry Muffins and Air Fryer Martha White Banana Nut Muffins if you want exact times.

Can I make mini muffins? Yes. Use the same batter in mini silicone cups and cut the cook time to 7 to 10 minutes.

How do I keep muffins from sticking to the air fryer? Bake them in silicone cups or a muffin tin coated with nonstick spray. Do not pour batter directly into the basket.

Why did my muffins come out dry? They were likely in a minute or two too long, or the batter was overmixed. Shorten the cook time slightly on your next batch and stir the batter only until combined.

Why are my tops brown but the centers raw? Your air fryer probably runs hot, or a metal tin browned the outside quickly. Drop the temperature by 10 degrees, add a couple of minutes, and rotate the basket halfway through.

Can I double the recipe? Yes — mix a double batch and air fry in rounds. The batter holds just fine on the counter while the first batch cooks.
