Ingredients & Substitutions

Ingredients for Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls: A spread of ingredients needed for jalapeno popper egg rolls, including jalapenos, cream cheese, shredded cheese, egg roll wrappers, and spices.
  • Jalapeños: If you prefer a tangy twist, pickled jalapeños can replace the fresh ones. For a milder version, try using Anaheim or poblano peppers, which offer less heat but still bring a rich flavor to the dish.
  • Cream Cheese: To make this recipe dairy-free, opt for dairy-free cream cheese. Alternatively, you can lighten up the recipe by using Greek yogurt, which still provides a creamy texture but with fewer calories.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese can be swapped in for a milder flavor if you want something a little less sharp.
  • Bacon Bits: If you’re looking for a vegetarian alternative, use plant-based bacon or skip the bacon altogether for a meatless version.
  • Egg Roll Wrappers: Instead of traditional egg roll wrappers, you can use spring roll wrappers or even tortillas for a different texture.

Air Fryer Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls Recipe Tips

  • Adjust Spice Levels: If you prefer a milder flavor, remove more seeds from the jalapeños or substitute with a less spicy pepper like Anaheim. For extra heat, leave the seeds in or add a touch of cayenne pepper.
  • Room Temperature Cream Cheese: Make sure your cream cheese is softened to room temperature before mixing. This ensures a smooth filling that’s easier to spread.
  • Crispy Texture: Lightly spray the egg rolls with cooking spray or brush with olive oil to achieve a crispy golden exterior.
  • Wrap Tight: When rolling the egg rolls, make sure they are tightly sealed to prevent the filling from spilling out during air frying. Use a little water along the edge of the wrapper to seal them securely.
  • Batch Cooking: If cooking multiple batches, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. This allows the egg rolls to cook evenly and become perfectly crispy on all sides.
  • Customize Fillings: Feel free to add or substitute ingredients in the filling. Try adding some shredded chicken or a different type of cheese, such as Monterey Jack, for a unique twist.
  • Serve Immediately: These egg rolls are best served hot out of the air fryer for the crispiest texture and most flavorful experience.
  • Dipping Sauce Variations: While ranch dressing is a classic, try different dips like sour cream, salsa, guacamole, or even a spicy sriracha mayo for variety.

Storing

  • Storing: Once your egg rolls have cooled, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. To keep them crispy, place a paper towel inside the container to absorb any excess moisture.
  • Freezing: For longer storage, freeze the uncooked egg rolls. Lay them out on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze until solid. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container. You can store them for up to 3 months. For cooked egg rolls, freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe container once frozen.
  • Reheating: Reheat leftover cooked egg rolls in the air fryer at 350°F for 4-6 minutes until they’re hot and crispy again. For frozen uncooked egg rolls, air fry them directly from the freezer at 375°F for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy. If reheating in the oven, bake at 375°F for about 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Air Fryer Jalapeno Popper Egg Rolls Recipe Faqs

Can I use frozen jalapenos for this recipe? While fresh jalapenos provide the best flavor and texture, frozen jalapenos can be used as an alternative. Just make sure to thaw and drain any excess moisture before using them in the filling.

How spicy are these egg rolls? The heat level depends on how many seeds you leave in the jalapenos. Removing the seeds significantly reduces the heat, but if you prefer a spicier version, leave some seeds in or add extra jalapenos.

Can I make these egg rolls ahead of time? Yes, you can prepare the egg rolls and refrigerate them before air frying. Just cover them tightly with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to cook, air fry them as usual.

Can I make these egg rolls without bacon? Yes, you can omit the bacon for a vegetarian version. You can also substitute it with plant-based bacon or another protein if desired.

Can I bake these egg rolls instead of using the air fryer? Yes, you can bake these egg rolls at 375°F for about 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden and crispy. Keep in mind that they may not be as crispy as when air fried, but they will still taste delicious.
