Wonton Jalapeno Poppers

Air fryer jalapeno poppers in wontons make for the perfect appetizer. They are amazingly light, crispy, and delicious.

Filled with cream cheese, diced jalapenos, shredded cheese, minced green onions, and an extra jalapeno on top for some extra kick, this is such a unique recipe — that I know you’re going to love just as much as my family does!

My kids even tried them as an afternoon snack as they came home from school. The cheese was perfectly melted, and the wonton wrapper was perfectly crisped up. Next time, I think I’ll add some bacon for a bit of crunchy on the inside for a better bite.

If you’ve been making my AIR FRYER JALAPENO POPPERS, here is your chance to elevate them even further. This is such a unique variation to a classic!

  • Wonton Wrappers: If you’ve never cooked with wontons before, you can find them in the produce department at your local grocery store.
  • Diced Jalapenos: Freshly diced jalapenos add a spicy kick to wonton jalapeno poppers! Make sure to use fresh as pickled usually aren’t as spicy.
  • Cream Cheese: Our creamy filling! It balances out all of the heat from the jalapenos while adding a rich texture.
  • Green Onions: Chopped green onions bring a fresh and mild onion flavor I love. It complements the creaminess of the cheese and adds a hint of color to the filling too.
  • Shredded Mexican Cheese: I love Mexican cheese blends here as they work well with the jalapenos. You’ll add it directly into the cream cheese mixture to create your filling.

Step 2: Air fry the wontons

Spray your muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray then place 1 wonton wrapper into each cavity. Transfer the tin to the air fryer and cook for 3-5 minutes at 300 degrees F. I like to cook the wontons separately first so that the bottoms brown up.

Step 3: Add the filling

Evenly distribute the filling into each wonton wrapper.

Jalapeno Wonton Popper Cups Pro Tips

  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened at room temperature before mixing with the other ingredients. This ensures a smooth and creamy texture that will stay gooey when heated in the air fryer.
  • Precook the Wonton Wrappers: Lightly spray or brush the wontons with oil and air fry them for a few minutes until they are crispy before adding the filling. This ensures they hold up well with the creamy filling. Don’t skip this step or your jalapeno wonton poppers will fall apart!
  • Customize the filling to your taste by adjusting the amount of diced jalapenos for heat, cream cheese for creaminess, and shredded Mexican cheese for gooeyness.
  • Don’t Overfill: Be cautious not to overfill the wonton wrappers with the cream cheese mixture to prevent them from leaking or becoming soggy during air frying.
  • Serve your wonton poppers hot and fresh from the air fryer to preserve their crispy texture and gooey filling.
  • Variation Ideas: Experiment with adding cooked bacon bits, chopped cilantro, or a sprinkle of paprika on top for added flavor and visual appeal.

Jalapeno Poppers in Wontons FAQs

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes! You can assemble the jalapeno popper wonton cups, but hold off on the second air fry. Store them in the refrigerator and then air fry just before serving to keep them crispy.

Can I freeze these poppers?

Yes, you can freeze assembled — but uncooked — wonton jalapeno poppers. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and freeze until solid. Then transfer them to a freezer-safe container or bag. When ready to cook, air fry from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

How do I keep the wontons from becoming soggy?

Make sure to precook them for a few minutes before you add the filling! This will help the wontons crisp up and ensure they hold up well with the creamy filling.

Can I adjust the heat level?

Absolutely! Adjust the amount of diced jalapenos you add to control the spiciness of your popper cups. You can also remove the seeds and membranes from the jalapenos for a milder flavor.

What dipping sauces pair well with these poppers?

Serve your jalapeno poppers in wontons with sour cream, ranch dressing, salsa, or a spicy aioli for dipping.
