How To Make Plantain Chips In Air Fryer

Here are the step-by-step directions for making a batch of plantain chips in air fryer oven or air fryer basket model:

Air Fryer Plantain Chips

Step 1: Prepare the plantains

Start by peeling and cut plantain. You ideally want to get them the same width so they air fry evenly. I would recommend about 1-inch chunks. You can also use a mandolin slicer, paring knife, or sharp knife.

Add the plantain slices and oil into a large bowl. Mix well, so all of the plantains are coated, which will help get that roasted flavor.

Air Fryer Plantain Chips Recipe Tips

  • Choose the Right Plantains: Use green plantains or slightly yellow plantains for the crispiest chips. Green plantains are firmer and less sweet, making them ideal for chips.
  • Even Slicing: Slice the plantains as evenly as possible, around 1/8-inch thick, using a mandoline slicer if available.
  • Light Oil Coating: Toss in a small amount of oil to help them crisp up. Use olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil depending on your flavor preference.
  • Single Layer Cooking:  Place plantain pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket to ensure even cooking. Overcrowding the basket can lead to unevenly cooked chips.
  • Shake or Flip: Shake the basket or flip the plantain slices halfway through the cooking time to ensure they crisp up evenly on both sides.
  • Season Immediately: Season the plantain chips immediately after they come out of the air fryer while they are still hot. This helps the seasoning stick better.
  • Cooling Time: Let the plantain chips cool completely before storing them. This allows them to crisp up further.
  • Watch Closely:  Monitor the chips closely during the last few minutes of cooking as they can go from perfectly crispy to burnt quickly
