What Is Italian Style Meatloaf?
Traditional meatloaf is made with a layer of ketchup. In an Italian meatloaf, you use a simple marinara sauce. You often add a layer of shredded cheese, either mozzarella or Parmesan cheese.
Another main difference is that while traditional meatloaf uses ground beef, Italian meatloaf is made with ground beef and ground Italian sausage. Which really adds a lot of flavor to the dish.

How To Make Air Fryer Italian Meatloaf

Step One: In a small skillet, add the olive oil, and over medium-high heat, simmer for about 30 seconds, and then add the diced onions. Cook until softened, then add the garlic in for about 30 seconds. Remove from heat.

Step Two: In a large mixing bowl, add the ground beef, sausage, bread crumbs, cheese, sauteed onions, garlic, eggs, 1/2 of the marina sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings, and mix well.

Step Three: Spray your loaf pan with cooking spray, then add your meatloaf mixture into the pan, pushing it tight. Spread 1/2 of the marinara sauce over the meatloaf and sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese. Set into the air fryer basket or on the air fryer tray (lowest shelf) set cook time for 15-20 minutes at air fryer temperature of 350 degrees F, air fryer setting.
Note: The exact time will depend on what size pan you are using and what air fryer you own. Check about 1/2 through the cooking process to ensure it’s not overcooked. If the top starts to get browned but the middle is raw, securely place a piece of foil over the meatloaf.

Air Fryer Italian Meatloaf Recipe Tips
- Don’t Overmix the Meat – Gently combine ingredients to keep the meatloaf tender, not dense.
- Use a Meat Thermometer – Ensure it reaches an internal temperature of 160°F for safe doneness.
- Let It Rest – Allow the meatloaf to sit for 5–10 minutes after cooking to hold its shape when slicing.
- Customize the Cheese – Try provolone, fontina, or asiago for different flavor twists.
- Line the Basket or Use a Loaf Pan – Prevents sticking and helps with easy cleanup.

- Reheating: To reheat, place slices in the air fryer at 350°F for 5–7 minutes until warmed through. You can also microwave individual portions for 1–2 minutes, covered loosely with a damp paper towel.

Air Fried Italian Meatloaf Recipe Faqs
Can I make this meatloaf ahead of time? Yes! You can prep the meatloaf mixture up to 24 hours in advance and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to cook.
What type of ground meat works best? A combination of lean ground beef and Italian sausage gives the best flavor and texture, but you can also use ground turkey or chicken as a lighter alternative.
How do I know when the meatloaf is fully cooked? Use a meat thermometer—the internal temperature should reach 160°F for safe consumption.
Can I use store-bought marinara sauce? Absolutely! Store-bought marinara works great, or you can use homemade if you prefer.
How do I keep the meatloaf from drying out in the air fryer? Make sure not to overcook it, and include enough moisture-rich ingredients like eggs, cheese, and sauce to keep it juicy. Covering loosely with foil for part of the cook time can also help.
