How To Make Greek Yogurt Bagels Air Fryer

Making 2-ingredient bagels in an air fryer is a straightforward and rewarding process. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Make Greek Yogurt Bagels Dough

Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees F, air fryer setting, for 3-5 minutes. Whisk together the self rising flour and thick yogurt in a large mixing bowl until a dough ball forms. Use your hands, silicone spatula, or wooden spoon. This makes it easier to work the dough together.

If you want to use a stand mixer, use a dough hook to mix the 2-ingredient dough on medium speed. Blend the ingredients until a dough forms.

Step 2: Divide Dough Into Balls

Form the dough into a ball and place it on a lightly floured surface; knead the ball of dough for a couple of minutes. Cut the ball into 4ths, then roll them between your hands to form 4 equal-sized balls.

 Step 3: Form Bagel Shapes

Roll the dough balls on the work surface into a long rope shape, about 8 inches long. Bring the ends together and pinch to form a circle. Repeat with the other dough balls.  In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Brush the bagels with the egg wash with a pastry brush, add your bagel seasoning.

Pro Tips For Making Two-Ingredient Air Fryer Bagels

Making two-ingredient bagels in an air fryer can be both fun and rewarding. Here are some pro tips to ensure they turn out perfectly every time:

  • Consistent Dough: Ensure the Greek yogurt and self-rising flour are thoroughly mixed to form a smooth, uniform dough. Avoid over-kneading, as this can make the bagels tough.
  • Flour the Surface: When shaping the bagels, lightly flour your hands and the surface to prevent sticking. This makes handling the dough easier.
  • Size and Shape: Keep the bagels relatively the same size for even cooking. Also, make the hole in the center larger than you think it should be, as it will close up a bit when the bagel expands during cooking.
  • Egg Wash for Shine: Brush the bagels with an egg wash (a beaten egg white) before air frying for a golden and shiny crust. This also helps any toppings adhere better.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer: Cook the bagels in a single layer without touching each other. This ensures they cook evenly and get a nice crust all around.
  • Cool Before Slicing: After air frying, let the bagels cool for a few minutes. This resting period helps finish cooking the inside and makes them easier to slice.
  • Storage: Store any leftover bagels in an airtight container. They can be refreshed by toasting, bringing back some of the original crust’s crunch.
  • Experiment with Flavors: Feel free to experiment with the dough by adding spices, bagel seasoning, herbs, or sweeteners for different flavor profiles.

Faqs Two-Ingredient Dough Bagels

Can I use regular yogurt instead of Greek yogurt? It’s best to use Greek yogurt because it has less moisture than regular yogurt. If you only have regular yogurt, strain it to remove excess liquid. For best results use plain Greek yogurt, that’s a little thicker.

Do I need to use self-rising flour? Yes, self rising flour is necessary as it contains baking powder and salt. To make self rising flour, add 1 ½ teaspoons of baking powder and ¼ teaspoon of salt to each cup of all-purpose flour. You can also switch out whole wheat flour for regular flour.

How do I know when the bagels are done? The bagels are done when they have a golden-brown color and a firm crust. This usually takes about 12-15 minutes at 280°F (140°C).

Can I make these bagels in advance? Yes, you can prepare the dough in advance and store it in the refrigerator overnight. You can also bake the bagels and store them in an airtight container for a few days.

Are these bagels suitable for freezing? Absolutely. Bake them, allow them to cool completely, and then freeze them in a sealed bag or container. Reheat in a toaster or oven when ready to eat.

Can I add sweeteners or flavors to the dough? Yes, you can customize the dough by adding sweeteners like honey or sugar or flavors like cinnamon or vanilla extract.

How can I make these bagels vegan? For a vegan version, you can try using a plant-based yogurt. However, the texture and taste might vary from the original recipe.

My dough is too sticky. What can I do?  If the dough is too sticky, add more flour until it becomes manageable. Be careful not to add too much, making the bagels dense.

Can I double this recipe? Yes, the recipe can be easily doubled. Ensure you cook the bagels in batches to not overcrowd the air fryer.

Do I need to flip the bagels during cooking? Flipping the bagels is not usually necessary, as the air fryer cooks them evenly. However, if you notice uneven browning, you can flip them halfway through. Check on your batch of 2-ingredient air fryer bagels during the cooking process.
