Air Fryer French Toast

This morning I decided to make French toast. Actually, I made several batches of it. Remember… I have teenage boys to feed in my house!

Instead of making it on the stovetop like I usually do, I decided to use my air fryer instead. And I’m happy to report that it was one of the easiest breakfast recipes I’ve ever made.

The batter is certainly rich thanks to the eggs and milk. But, never fear! When added to the bread and then air fried, your French toast in air fryer is guaranteed to come out light and fluffy every time.

This simple French toast air fryer recipe can easily be doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled if you’re expecting guests. I will most definitely be making it around the holidays when family and friends are in town visiting. In the meantime, my boys would happily eat this every morning!

Ingredients Needed for Air Fried French Toast

You don’t need anything too complicated to make French toast in your air fryer! In fact, you likely already have everything you need. You’ll use the same ingredients as you would in a traditional French toast recipe.

  • Bread: You can use whatever kind of bread you’d like. I ended up grabbing some simple white sandwich bread because that’s what I had at home! Whole wheat, multigrain, or even French or Italian bread would also work. Basically, if it fits in the air fryer, you can use it! Challah or brioche are also great options.
  • Eggs & Milk: To make the French toast batter! You’ll beat the eggs first and then add the milk. They both add richness to the overall flavor of your French toast, plus act as a vehicle for the vanilla and cinnamon.
  • Vanilla & Cinnamon: Here’s where the sweet and warm flavors you know and love about French toast come from! I like pure vanilla extract, but you could also use vanilla bean paste if that’s what you prefer. I wouldn’t skip the cinnamon!

French Toast Air Fryer Pro Tips

  • Use Up Stale Bread: This French toast recipe is a great one for using up any stale bread you may have! It will soak up the egg mixture better, giving you a crispier outside and softer inside.
  • For the best golden-brown crust, make sure that egg mixture isn’t too runny. A thicker batter will coat the bread better!
  • Don’t Overcrowd: You want to avoid overcrowding the pan, or your air fryer basket if that’s what you’re using. If you squish too many slices of bread inside, your air fried French toast won’t cook evenly.
  • If you are thinking about using your air fryer basket, I can’t say enough good things about using a pan instead. You can keep reusing it to make as much air fryer French toast as you need without having to go in and clean the basket out each time.
  • Experiment with Toppings: Whenever I make French toast in air fryer, I let my kids choose their own toppings. Butter and maple syrup are classic choices, but sometimes they ask for something a bit more decadent! Cinnamon sugar, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or whipped cream are all up for grabs!

Air Fryer French Toast FAQs

Can I use frozen bread?

Absolutely! Frozen bread is a great option for air fried French toast. It does require a bit of forethought, though. Make sure to thaw it in the fridge overnight before dipping it into the egg mixture and then air frying.

How long should I air fry French toast?

It really depends on your air fryer and how thick your bread is. 3 minutes or so on each side at 375 degrees F is a good jumping-off point. Generally, it takes around 5-7 minutes total, so start checking for doneness around the 5-6 minute mark. Thicker slices may take up to 8 or 9 minutes.

How long does air fryer French toast last in the fridge?

If you have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Any longer, and it could go soggy. To reheat, place the French toast back into the air fryer and heat at 350 degrees F until warmed through.

Can I freeze this recipe?

Sure thing! Let the French toast cool completely, then place in an airtight container or freezer bag. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, let it thaw overnight in the fridge before adding it back to the air fryer, or air fry from frozen. You may need to adjust the cooking time.
