What Are Latkes?

Latkes are a traditional Jewish food eaten during Hanukkah. They are pancakes made from grated potato, flour, and egg. Their name comes from the Yiddish word “latke,” which means ‘small pancake.’ When you eat latkes, they taste fantastic with applesauce or sour cream!

Latkes are one of our favorite things about Hanukkah because they’re delicious and easy to make! They’re just like pancakes, but we use mashed potatoes instead of flour.

Air fryers are a great way to make traditionally fried food healthier without deep fat. Air Fryers work by circulating hot air around the air fryer basket and cooking the food to perfection. While the taste is as good as fried food, with your air fryer, you will avoid frying cooks with vegetable oil that’s higher in calories, making your food healthy and delicious! Same great flavor, fewer calories! Oh, so good!

Tips and FAQs

  • Potatoes: The secret to crispy potato latkes is in the potatoes themselves! To make them, you need to remove the moisture. Make sure you squeeze all your thawed potatoes to remove as much water as possible.
  • Preheating: To get a crisp Air Fryer Latkes, don’t forget about preheating your air fryer. You will get a crispy exterior with a warm and delicious interior.
  • Oil: Use any oil with a high smoking point, I usually use olive oil, but you can avocado oil, peanut oil, grapeseed oil, or even sesame oil.
  • Crowding: Do not crowd the air fryer basket. Otherwise, the potato latkes will not make crisps up.
  • Flipping: Depending on the air fryer you own, you may need to flip your Air Fryer Latkes halfway during the cooking process.
  • Seasonings: You can add any seasoning that you wish. Some great ones are fresh herbs, Cajun Seasoning, and even minced garlic or ginger.
  • Breadcrumbs: Use matzo meal instead for a more traditional homemade latke. It is more coarse than dried breadcrumbs, so make sure you give the matzo a few minutes to absorb the liquid from the potato before frying.
  • Using An Air Fryer Oven: Place the tray on the lowest slot so that the outside and outside cook simultaneously.

What Is The Difference Between Latkes and Potato Pancakes?

What’s the difference between latkes and potato pancakes? You might think that they’re the same, but there is a difference. Latkes are traditionally made of grated potatoes with eggs and onions, while you can make potato pancakes from any mashed vegetable like russet or sweet potatoes. The texture of these two dishes also differs. Potato pancakes have a more dense texture than latkes which are usually light and crispy outside with a fluffy inside.

How To Store Latkes

This recipe will make about 10 to 12 delicious potato latkes. If you have any leftovers, place them in a sealed container for 1 or 2 days in the refrigerator.

They also freeze well, wrap them in saran wrap, and keep them for about 2 to 3 weeks.

Reheating Latkes In Air Fryer

A great way to eat leftover latkes is by reheating them in the oven or air fryer. Please place them in a preheated air fryer at 350 degrees F, air fryer setting, and heat until warmed through.

Frozen Potato Pancakes In Air Fryer: If you want to reheat frozen latkes in air fryer set them into the air fryer basket and cook for 7 to 10 minutes at 350 degrees F.

What To Serve With Latkes

Latkes are delicious, crispy potato pancakes traditionally served during Hanukkah. While they taste great on their own, they can be made even more flavorful by serving them with various condiments and sides. Serve latkes alongside spicy horseradish and sweet applesauce for an exciting twist on the traditional dish!

When it comes to making this traditional Jewish dish, there is no one right way – you can serve your latkes with whatever tastes best!

What Type Of Frozen Potatoes Are Best For Latkes?
