Ingredients Needed

Ingredients needed for Spicy Korean Q Wings (Wingstop Copycat) on kitchen table.
  • Honey: For a sweet element.
  • Gochujang: Available at most United States grocery stores and Korean markets
  • Brown Sugar: For some sweetness
  • Soy Sauce: Regular, or low-sodium soy sauce
  • Rice Wine Vinegar: Be sure not to use regular vinegar.
  • Chicken Wings: Use fresh or frozen chicken wings
  • Spices and Seasonings: Minced Garlic, Minced Ginger, Black Pepper, Kosher Salt, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, and Cornstarch
  • Serving: Sliced Green Onions, Sesame Seeds, and Red Pepper Flakes

How To Make Wingstop Korean Wings

In a small saucepan make the sauce.

Step One: Combine honey, gochujang, brown sugar, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, garlic, ginger, and ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper in a small, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-low heat.  Stirring frequently, bring up to a simmer and cook for five minutes. Add scallions and remove from heat; set aside.

Toss the chicken wings with baking soda, for crispy chicken

Step Two: Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F. Using the air fryer setting, preheat for 3-5 minutes.  Place chicken wing sections in a large mixing bowl.  Add salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and remaining black pepper and toss wings to coat.  Add corn starch and thoroughly incorporate.

Place the chicken wings into the air fryer basket, leaving space in between, for the air-flow.

Step Three: Place wing pieces in the bottom of the air fryer basket, shaking off the excess cornstarch mixture. Work in batches if the air fryer is too small to accommodate all chicken wings in a single layer.  Set the air fryer cook time for 25-28 minutes, shake the basket after 10 minutes, and flip the wings over after another 8 minutes.

Check the internal temperature of the wings, which would be 165 degrees F, in the thickest part of the chicken wing.

Spicy Korean Q Wings (Wingstop Copycat) Recipe Tips

  • Use chicken wings with the skin on – The chicken skin adds flavor and helps the wings stay crispy.
  • Pat the wings dry with paper towels – This will help the coating mixture stick better to the wings and promote even browning.
  • Coat the wings evenly – Coat each wing in the sauce to ensure an even cooking and crispy texture.
  • Preheat the air fryer – Preheating the air fryer before adding the wings will ensure they cook evenly and achieve a crispy exterior.
  • Cook in batches – Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket, leading to uneven cooking and soggy wings.
  • Make the sauce ahead of time – Preparing the sauce ahead of time will save time and allow the flavors to meld together.
  • Shake Basket: Shake the air fryer basket frequently during the cooking process.
  • Toss the wings in the sauce while they’re still hot – Tossing them while they’re still hot will help the sauce adhere to the wings and create a deliciously sticky coating.
  • Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions – These garnishes add a pop of color and extra flavor to the wings.

Spicy Korean Q Wings (Wingstop Copycat) Recipe Faqs

Can I use frozen wings? Yes, you can use frozen wings, but make sure to thaw them first for even cooking and to achieve a crispy texture.

How do I make the wings extra crispy? For extra crispiness, pat the wings dry before cooking, and use a light coating of cornstarch on the wings before air frying.

Can I adjust the spice level? Absolutely! Adjust the amount of gochujang or red pepper flakes in the sauce to control the heat level to your preference.

Can I make these wings ahead of time? It’s best to enjoy them fresh for the crispiest texture, but you can reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-4 minutes to restore some crispiness.

What’s a good dipping sauce for these wings? Ranch, blue cheese, or a cool cucumber yogurt sauce pairs well with the spicy flavor of Korean-style wings.
