What Are Cheesy Hasselback Potatoes?

Cheesy Hasselback potatoes are a side dish from Sweden. The “Hasselback” part comes from the Hasselbacken Hotel, where the dish was first served. Hasselback potatoes are thinly sliced almost all the way through but left intact. Then, they’re baked.

This cutting style is what defines the Hasselback style. It also makes the potatoes look elegant and restaurant-ready, which is always a plus. Cheesy Hasselback potatoes are Hasselback potatoes that have cheese placed between each cut, giving it a cheesetastic flavor.

Traditionally, they’re made in the oven and baked. Today, we can take a short cut by using an air fryer to speed things up.

How To Make Cheesy Hasselback Potatoes In An Air Fryer

Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Air Fryer Cheesy Hasselback Potatoes

Preparation: Start by washing and drying the Russet potatoes. Make sure they are clean since you’ll be eating the skins.

Slicing the Potatoes: Carefully make slices across each potato, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch apart, making sure not to cut all the way through. A tip is to place chopsticks or wooden spoons on either side of the potato while slicing to prevent the knife from cutting all the way down.

Seasoning: Brush the potatoes with melted butter, ensuring they get into the slices. Sprinkle them with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper, again making sure the seasoning gets between the slices.

Air Fry: Preheat your air fryer to 390 degrees F (200 degrees C). Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket and set cook time for 30-40 minutes or until they soften and open up. The exact time will depend on the potatoes’ size.

Cheesy Hasselback Potato Recipe Modifications You Might Want To Try

Now that we’ve gone over the basic cheesy Hasselback potato recipe, it’s time to talk about how to customize it to suit your family’s tastes. These twists are highly recommended:

  • Switch up the cheese. While most people use cheddar, you can always experiment with different flavors. Pepper Jack cheese is great if you want a spicy kick. Gouda delivers a nutty kick. Taco cheese can also be used to make a more Mexican-style treat while mozzarella will work well on Italian potatoes.
  • Change the herbs. If you are gearing toward an Italian fusion night, try these cheesy Hasselback potatoes with basil and oregano. Mexican-themed potatoes tend to do well with chives, cilantro, and a little bit of jalapeno pepper.
  • Kick the spice up a notch. Jalapeno peppers aside, you can also add a spicy kick to your potatoes by adding a dash of cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper flakes, or even garlic to your spuds. Once they’re cooked, adding a splash of Tabasco can increase that heat..
  • Garlic it up. Crushed minced garlic fries beautifully in an air fryer and enhances the garlicky flavor of your potatoes.
  • Drizzle some sauce on it. Need an Italian kick? Add pesto on top of your potatoes before you bake them. If you want to get a more “smokehouse” Hasselback potato, try drizzling barbecue sauce or ranch on top of your potatoes.

Can you reheat cheesy Hasselback potatoes?

Yes. If you want to reheat them, bake them at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 25 minutes. Or, if you’re in a pinch, you can always microwave them until they’re fully heated through.

Can you freeze cheesy Hasselback potatoes?

While freezing them is an option, it comes with a major drawback: it can make them mushy. It’s best to store them in a refrigerator, wrapped in foil.

What dishes work well with air fryer cheesy Hasselback potatoes?

The truly beautiful thing about these Hasselback potatoes is that they can be paired with almost any major food dish. However, many families find that cheesy Hasselback potatoes go well with classic family barbecue foods like wings, baby back ribs, hamburgers, and even grilled shrimp.
