You can either make these in a regular Air Fryer, use your Mealthy Lid, or even your Instant Pot Duo Crisp Lid. The recipe will work in all of them! This is a straightforward recipe, and you can really choose your fillings. I went with a classical brown sugar and butter smothering.

Air Fryer Sweet Potato Hasselback
These are so good. Today I used the tool I purchased off Amazon, but you could also use the chopstick method.
As for toppings, I used classic brown sugar and butter, which is what you would find at any Outback Steakhouse Restaurant (which I love), but some other popular filings you could do for Air Fryer Hasselback Sweet Potatoes:
- Butter with Herbs
- Cream Cheese
- Anything you like with your sweet potatoes.
Start by washing your sweet potatoes. Then dry them off.
Slice the sweet potato with slices (either use the tool or make the slices with a sharp knife about 1/4 inch.) Use olive oil and grease the potato, and add some sea salt. Place the potatoes into the air fryer basket, and set the temperature to 350 degrees F for 20 minutes. (air fryer setting)
After 20 minutes, brush melted butter on top, and air fry for another 20 to 30 minutes at 350 degrees F. (air fryer setting). Remove when fork-tender.
While the potato finishes cooking in a small bowl, mix the melted butter with brown sugar, and when the potatoes are done, fill the cavities with the brown sugar butter mixture right before serving.
SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT AIR FRYER HASSELBACK POTATOES
WHAT POTOATES MAKE THE BEST HASSELBACK POTATOES?
I love a good starchy potato for this recipe, some of my favorites at Idaho and Russet Potatoes. The starch in the potatoes actually does better crisping up in the air fryer.
If you are looking for an alternative, you can make Mini Air Fryer Hasselback Potatoes by using mini potatoes. The same technique will work.
For Thanksgiving, I love making Air Fryer Hasellback Sweet Potatoes; they are amazing. Fill the crevices with butter and brown sugar, amazing!
CAN YOU MAKE HASSELBACK POTATOES WITH RED POTATOES?
yes, if you only have red potatoes, make them with red potatoes.
Because red potatoes are not very starchy, the outside might not get very crunchy. Make sure to add some extra olive oil and salt on the outside, which will help them crisp up in the air fryer.
SHOULD I PEEL THEM?
No, you can if you want to, but the best way to serve them is with the skin on. I find that they stay together much better than when you remove the skin.
WHAT IS THE HASSELBACK TECHNIQUE?
Hasselback is a very old-fashioned cooking method in which chicken or potatoes are sliced, about 2/3 rds the way through in thin, even layers. Usually, in between the slices, you add additional toppings or flavorings or even stuff additional items to season the food.
As a cooking technique, it’s nothing new it has been just reintroduced since the air fryer does a great job at cooking food.
WHAT OTHER THINGS COULD I PUT IN BETWEEN THE POCKET OF THE POTATOES?
Here are some of my favorite fillings you can add anything that you want. These are some of the most popular ones.
- Slices of cheddar cheese.
- Garlic and butter
- Loaded potatoes with cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, sour cream, and chives.
