Checkers Fries in Air Fryer

With just a few ingredients and some handy tips, you can recreate the iconic flavor of this popular fast-food dish in your own kitchen.

Rally’s Restaurant (also called Checkers in some parts of the US) has been an American favorite since its inception in 1985, and it definitely happens to be one of my family’s faves. The restaurant offers a wide variety of grilled burgers and tasty fries, as well as chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, fish sandwiches, and salads. Here’s a fun fact for you: it was the first double drive-thru restaurant.

They are known for the “hundreds of orders” of their famous fries, which are proudly made with Grade A potatoes that are cut into golden, crisp strips and cooked to perfection in cholesterol-free oil.

Lucky for all of us, Checkers/Rally’s sells frozen, seasoned fries that you can make in the air fryer at home!

How to Make Air Fryer Checkers Fries

My Checkers fries air fryer recipe is super quick and easy! Below are the step-by-step instructions to follow to make your own delicious fries.

overhead: rally's fries in air fryer basket

Step 1: Recipe prep

Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees F for 3-5 minutes and remove the fries from the freezer.

Step 2: Air fry

When your air fryer is preheated, add the frozen fries to the basket in a single layer — make sure they aren’t touching each other for the crispiest results. You can always air fry Checkers fries in batches if needed.

Set the cooking time for 8-10 minutes. Flip and continue to air fry for another 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

Step 3: Serve

Once finished, remove the air fryer Checkers fries from the basket and taste.

They come seasoned, so you may not need to add anything. If you do, sea salt and your favorite seasoning blend would be tasty!

Other ways to make Checkers fries

Just in case you don’t have an air fryer, I wanted to provide cooking instructions for a conventional oven and deep fryer:

  1. Preheat to 450 degrees F
  2. Place the frozen fries in a single layer on an ungreased baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 15 minutes, stirring once after 7 minutes.
  4. After 15 minutes, reduce the temperature to 375 degrees F and bake for an additional 16-18 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Serve hot!

If you want to use a deep fryer, simply preheat the oil to 375 degrees F, then add about half the bag of frozen Checkers fries to the deep fryer basket. Dip into the hot oil and cook for 20-25 minutes, until the fries are fully cooked.

Checkers Fries Air Fryer Pro Tips

  • For best results, make sure to leave plenty of space between the Checkers fries in the air fryer basket so they crisp up evenly. Spread them out evenly and don’t overcrowd that basket. Remember you can always cook in batches if needed!
  • While you use less oil than you would in deep frying, if you want crispy fries, use a few sprays of cooking spray or brush with olive oil.
  • While these are perfectly seasoned, some great options for seasoning are garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, or black pepper.
  • Since all air fryers are slightly different, it’s important that you check on your fries while they cook. The baking time will vary from air fryer to air fryer.

Air Fry Checkers Fries FAQs

Can you make Checkers Rally’s fries in the air fryer?

Absolutely! That’s what this recipe is all about. Air frying is a much healthier alternative to deep-frying and produces consistently crispy results that closely resemble the taste of deep-fried food.

How long to cook Checkers fries in air fryer?

It shouldn’t take much longer than about 13 minutes at 350 degrees F in the air fryer. If you want them really crispy, add a couple of sprays of olive oil spray and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Can I put frozen fries in the air fryer?

Yes, you can air fry Checkers fries (or any other brand for that matter!) directly from frozen. No need to thaw!

And of course, you can’t forget about those tasty dipping sauces!

Best Dipping Sauces for Checkers Fries in Air Fryer

From classic ketchup to creamy ranch dressing and beyond, there are plenty of choices to consider!

  • Ketchup – A classic condiment, ketchup is the perfect pairing for air fryer Checkers fries. It adds a bit of tanginess and sweetness to the salty flavor of the fries.
  • Mustard – Whether you opt for spicy brown mustard or mild yellow mustard, this condiment is sure to add a bit of spice and zestiness to your Checkers fries air fryer recipe.
  • BBQ Sauce – The smoky sweetness of barbecue sauce pairs perfectly with the crispy fries and adds just the right amount of flavor.
  • Ranch Dressing – If you’re looking for something creamy and indulgent, ranch dressing is a great choice.
  • Mayonnaise – Whether you use classic mayo or try something more flavorful like chipotle mayo, this condiment will add an extra kick of creaminess.
  • Honey Mustard – For a bit of sweetness, honey mustard is an excellent choice. The combination of spicy and sweet flavors will really make the fries shine.

Storing and Reheating

After making this Checkers fries air fryer recipe, allow the food to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container lined with paper towels. Fries will last in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

I recommend using your air fryer to reheat for the crispiest results. Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees F and heat for 5-6 minutes or until hot. You may need to shake the basket a few times during cooking to ensure even heating.
