What Is Bacon Sushi?
Bacon sushi, also known as bacon roll sushi or bacon maki, is a creative fusion dish that combines elements of traditional sushi with the savory goodness of bacon.
Instead of using raw fish, this variation features crispy bacon as one of the main ingredients. There are several ways to prepare bacon sushi, but here are a couple of common approaches: Bacon-Wrapped Sushi Rolls: In this version, bacon is cooked until crispy and used to wrap around traditional sushi fillings such as rice, vegetables, and sometimes cooked seafood. BLT Sushi Rolls: Another popular variant is the BLT (Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato) sushi roll. This recipe involves using flattened bread or tortillas as the base, which is then spread with mayonnaise and layered with crispy bacon, lettuce, and tomato. The roll is then air-fried or baked until the bread is crispy.
Why People Love Bacon Sushi
- Unique Fusion: Bacon sushi combines the beloved flavors of bacon with the unique presentation and versatility of sushi, making it an exciting dish for those who enjoy fusion cuisine.
- Versatility: The dish can be customized with various fillings and sauces, allowing for endless creativity in the kitchen.
- Ease of Preparation: Depending on the recipe, bacon sushi can be relatively easy to prepare, especially the BLT version which uses readily available ingredients and simple techniques.

Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below, in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information.
- Bacon: Crispy bacon slices provide a savory and smoky flavor that serves as the main protein in the sushi rolls.
- Lettuce: Fresh lettuce adds a crisp texture and a refreshing, light flavor to balance the richness of the bacon.
- Tomato: Juicy tomato slices offer a burst of acidity and sweetness, complementing the other ingredients perfectly.
- Mayonnaise: A thin layer of mayonnaise spread on the bread adds creaminess and enhances the overall flavor of the sushi rolls.
- Optional: Avocado: Creamy avocado slices can be added for extra richness and a buttery texture, elevating the sushi rolls with additional flavor and nutrients.
- Optional: Cheese: A slice of cheese, such as cheddar or provolone, can be included for added creaminess and a hint of tanginess.
How To Make Air Fryer BLT Sushi
Here are the step-by-step directions to make BLT Sushi using the air fryer:
Prepare air fryer basket by lining with parchment paper. Preheat air fryer to 375 degrees F, if manufacturer’s instructions call for preheating the appliance. Remove bacon from package and separate strips into two equal groups of strips. Usually this is either five or six slices a piece.
Using a pair of kitchen shears or scissors, cut one set of the bacon strips in half.
Lay the longer strips out neatly in rows on a clean surface (or a piece of parchment paper that can fit into the air fryer basket) and create a basket weave with the shorter bacon strips, interlacing the bacon strips, and alternating between slices (see images for examples).
Do this for all of the bacon until you have a complete bacon “quilt” of sorts. Place the bacon (or the parchment) into the air fryer basket and place the air fryer basket into the air fryer. Set the cook time for 14-16 minutes, or until bacon is cooked through, but not overly crispy.
Carefully lift air fryer basket and tilt to remove grease from bottom of basket. Remove air fryer basket from air fryer and set aside on heatproof surface to cool for at least 5 minutes, before removing bacon.
Once bacon has cooled sufficiently to work with, coat liberally with mayo using soft spatula. Top with lettuce and tomato. Roll bacon up tightly lengthwise, creating a sushi-like “roll” out of the bacon, lettuce and tomato. Use the optional toothpicks to secure the bacon “roll” if necessary to preserve the “sushi roll” shape.
Pro Tips For Air-Fried BLT Sushi
- Crispy Bacon: Cook the bacon until it’s extra crispy. This will ensure it holds up well in the sushi roll and provides a satisfying crunch.
- Dry Ingredients: Pat the lettuce and tomato slices dry with a paper towel before assembling the sushi rolls.
- Even Spreading: Spread the mayonnaise thinly and evenly on the bread. Too much mayo can make the bread soggy, while an even layer will add the perfect amount of creaminess.
- Tight Rolling: Roll the bread tightly with the bacon, lettuce, and tomato inside. A tight roll ensures the sushi holds together well during cooking and slicing.
- Use Toothpicks: Secure the rolls with toothpicks before placing them in the air fryer. This will help them maintain their shape during cooking.
- Customize Fillings: Feel free to add other fillings like avocado, cheese, or a drizzle of balsamic glaze for extra flavor and texture. These additions can enhance the overall taste and make the sushi more unique.
Air Fryer BLT Sushi Recipe Faqs
How do I ensure the bacon stays crispy? Cook the bacon until it’s extra crispy before assembling the sushi rolls.
Can I add other ingredients to the BLT sushi rolls? Yes, you can customize the rolls by adding avocado, cheese, or even a drizzle of balsamic glaze for extra flavor and texture. These additions can enhance the overall taste and make the sushi more unique.
How do I keep the rolls from falling apart during cooking? Secure the rolls with toothpicks after assembling.
What if my air fryer is small? If your air fryer is small, cook air fryer bacon weave smaller to avoid overcrowding the basket. This ensures even cooking and crispiness.
