Easy Air Fryer Apple Pie Danish Twists Recipe Tips

  • Use room-temperature crescent dough for easier handling and less tearing.
  • Spread filling evenly but don’t overfill to prevent leaks while twisting.
  • Seal edges firmly to keep the apple filling inside during air frying.
  • Brush with melted butter for a golden, shiny finish.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon sugar while warm so it sticks nicely to the pastry.
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket — give each twist space to crisp.
  • Check halfway through cooking and rotate if necessary for even browning.
  • Serve warm for the best flaky texture and melty filling.

Storing Instructions

  • Room Temperature: Allow the twists to cool completely, then store in an airtight container for up to 1–2 days. They’re best enjoyed the same day for maximum flakiness.
  • Refrigerator: Store cooled twists in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. Reheat in the air fryer or oven to restore crispiness.
  • Freezer: Wrap individually in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer-safe bag or container. Freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheating: From fridge: Air fry at 320°F for 3–5 minutes until warmed through. From frozen: Thaw overnight in the fridge, then reheat as above. Or warm gently in the microwave, but the pastry may lose some crispness.

Easy Air Fryer Apple Pie Danish Twists Recipe Faqs

Can I use store-bought puff pastry or crescent dough? Yes! This recipe is designed to be easy, so pre-made puff pastry or canned crescent roll dough (cut into strips) works perfectly. Ensure the dough is cold when you start for the best flakiness.

How do I prevent the dough from unrolling or flying up in the air fryer? Make sure you pinch the ends of the twisted dough very securely. For very light items, you can sometimes use two toothpicks to secure the ends to the basket or use a heavier trivet or rack on top during the initial cook time.

Do I need to cook the apple filling beforehand? Yes, it is highly recommended. Cooking the apples slightly with butter and spices helps them soften and ensures the filling thickens (using cornstarch or flour). This prevents the filling from being watery and making the pastry soggy.

How many twists can I cook at once? You must cook the twists in a single layer without overcrowding the air fryer basket. This allows the air to circulate and ensures the pastry puffs up and crisps evenly on all sides. You will need to work in batches.

How do I get that perfect golden-brown color? For a deep golden color and a beautiful sheen, brush the twists with an egg wash (one egg beaten with a teaspoon of water or milk) just before placing them in the air fryer.

Can I make these with a different filling? Absolutely. You can substitute the apple filling with cherry, raspberry, or peach pie filling, or even a sweetened cream cheese mixture. Just ensure any fruit filling is thickened slightly to prevent leaks.
