What Are Apple Fries?

They are a delectable snack or dessert made from sliced apples that are coated, seasoned, and then cooked until crispy, often using methods like deep frying or air frying. They offer a fun and delightful way to enjoy the natural sweetness of apples with a crispy and sometimes spiced outer layer. While they don’t contain traditional potato-based fries, the name “apple fries” is a playful reference to their shape and texture, resembling french fries. These apple treats can be served with dipping sauces or toppings, making them a versatile and satisfying snack or dessert option.

Apple fries are extremely popular at Burger King and Cracker Barrel, but today, with your air fryer, you can make a delicious batch of apple fries in minutes! These healthy snacks will soon become one of your favorite easy desserts!

  • Apples (Sweet or Tart): Apples are the star ingredient, providing natural sweetness and a crisp texture. You can choose sweet apples like Honeycrisp for a milder flavor or tart apples like Granny Smith for a zesty kick.

  • Graham Cracker Crumbs: Graham cracker crumbs add a delightful hint of graham flavor and an extra layer of crispiness, making them even more delicious.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar is combined with ground cinnamon to create a sweet and aromatic coating.

Step One: Cut and Peel The Apples

Spray your air fryer basket with olive oil or cooking spray. Start by peeling the apples with an apple peeler and then cutting them into apple wedges or apple slices.

Step Three: Air Fry Your Apple Fries

Place apple fries in the air fryer basket. Spray them generously with olive oil–this will help you get a plate of crispy coating. Set the temperature to 380 degrees F and the cook time to 8-10 minutes. Use tongs to flip them halfway through the cooking process. After you flip them, liberally spray with olive oil or brush with vegetable oil or canola oil.

Step Four: Serving

Once the apple sticks are golden brown and crispy, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool slightly before serving. For easy removal, use a large slotted spoon or tongs.

Serve with caramel sauce or a cinnamon sugar coating on top. Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for dipping. It adds an extra layer of indulgence to this delicious dessert.

Pro Tips

  • Fresh Apples: Opt for crisp, slightly tart apple varieties. The best options for apple fry are Granny Smith Apples or Honeycrisp apples. Their texture holds up well during air frying, and their natural tartness complements the sweet cinnamon coating.
  • Uniform Slicing: Slice the apples to a uniform thickness to ensure they are even when cooking. Use a sharp knife or a mandoline slicer for consistent results.
  • Prevent Browning: To prevent browning, toss the apple slices in lemon juice immediately after cutting them. This adds a zesty brightness to the flavor.
  • Coat Evenly: When coating the apple slices with cinnamon sugar and cornstarch, make sure each slice is evenly covered. This helps achieve a uniform crispiness.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat ensures they start cooking immediately, resulting in a crisper texture.
  • To avoid overcrowding, arrange them in a single layer, ensuring space between them. Overcrowding can lead to uneven cooking and less crispy results.
  • Spray with Cooking Oil: Lightly spray with cooking oil or use a spritzer. This helps them achieve a golden-brown and crispy exterior without excessive oil.
  • Flip Halfway Through: Flip halfway through the cooking time to ensure both sides are evenly crispy. This step is essential for achieving uniform texture.
  • Monitor Carefully: Keep a close eye on them as they cook, especially toward the end of cooking time. Temperatures can vary, and you want to prevent overcooking, leading to a tough texture.
  • Serve Immediately: They are best when served fresh and warm. Enjoy them right after air frying for the crispiest experience.
  • Dipping Sauces:– Serve with dipping sauces, such as caramel sauce, caramel dip, caramel cream dip, cream cheese, vanilla yogurt (mixed with brown sugar) or even a drizzle of honey, to enhance the flavor and add extra enjoyment. Sprinkle with apple pie spice right before serving for added flavor.

Faq’s

Can I leave the skin on the apples? Yes, you can leave the skin on if you prefer. Apple skin adds extra fiber and nutrients. Just make sure to wash and thoroughly scrub the apples before slicing.

Can I use other types of apples? While Granny Smith, Gala, Pink Lady, Honey Crisp, Red Delicious, and Honeycrisp apples are popular for their tartness and crisp texture, you can experiment with the type of apple to suit your taste preferences.

Can I make these in advance? While these are is best enjoyed fresh for maximum crispiness, you can prepare the apple slices and coat them in lemon juice ahead of time to prevent browning. Air-fry them just before serving them for the best results.

Can I reheat leftover apple fries? Reheating for a few minutes can help restore some crispiness, but they may not be as crispy as when freshly made. It’s best to enjoy them right after cooking.

What dipping sauces go well with apple fries? They pair well with dipping sauces, including homemade caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, vanilla yogurt, whipped cream, or even peanut butter. Feel free to get creative with your choices.

Can I use a different spice other than cinnamon? Yes, you can experiment with different spices to create unique flavor profiles. For a different twist, use nutmeg, brown sugar, apple pie spice, vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, allspice, or pumpkin spice.

Are these apple fries healthy? They are a healthier alternative to traditional fried snacks or desserts since they use less oil and retain the nutrients of the apples. However, the sugar and caramel sauce can add sweetness and calories, so enjoy them in moderation.

Can I make savory apple fries? Absolutely! You can skip the sugar and cinnamon, season with salt and spices like paprika or cayenne pepper, and serve them as a savory side dish.

How to store leftover apple fries: Let the crisp apple wedges cool to room temperature and place them in an airtight container. When stored in the refrigerator, the apples will last 2-3 days.

Can I freeze apple fries for later use? Freezing is not recommended, as they may lose their crispiness upon thawing. It’s best to enjoy them fresh.

Can I make these without an air fryer?– Yes, you can bake. Place them on a baking sheet in a conventional oven at around 375°F (190°C) until they are crispy and golden brown, flipping them halfway through
