The viral Boursin pasta gets a quick upgrade in the air fryer. Juicy cherry tomatoes burst into a smooth, creamy sauce around melty herb-and-garlic cheese. Ready in 20 minutes with just one dish and three ingredients.

If you’ve spent any time on TikTok or Instagram, you’ve seen this dish. The original baked feta pasta went viral in 2021 and started a whole genre of “throw cheese and tomatoes in a pan” recipes. The Boursin version is the upgrade — creamier, herbier, and significantly easier to mix into a silky pasta sauce because Boursin melts into something close to perfection without any extra work. (If you love this recipe, try my recipe for it’s so good, and makes for a great appetizer)
This air fryer version takes the classic oven recipe and cuts the cooking time in half. About 5 minutes of prep, 10–15 minutes in the air fryer, and you have a one-dish dinner that tastes like it took way more effort than it did.

Why Boursin Is the Better Cheese for This
The original viral recipe used feta, which works — but feta stays slightly chunky even when baked. Boursin (the soft, garlic-and-herb-flavored French cheese in the silver foil package) is fundamentally different. It’s already creamy and pre-seasoned with garlic, parsley, chives, and pepper. When you bake it, it doesn’t just soften — it transforms into a silky, herb-infused sauce as soon as you stir it.
That means:
- No additional seasoning required. The Boursin already has all the herbs and garlic built in.
- Smoother sauce. No chunks of cheese, no graininess — just creamy.
- Faster mixing. A few stirs with a spoon and your pasta is coated.
- Forgiving recipe. Hard to mess up, even for beginner cooks.

Why the Air Fryer Works Better Than the Oven
The original baked Boursin pasta calls for a 400°F oven for 25–30 minutes. The air fryer cuts that time roughly in half because:
- Faster preheat — 3 minutes vs. 10+ for an oven
- More direct heat — circulating hot air softens the cheese and bursts the tomatoes faster
- Less energy — no need to heat a full oven for a single-pan dish
- Easier cleanup — one small dish, one fork
The flavor is identical to the oven version. The only “trade-off” is needing to use a smaller dish that fits in the air fryer basket — which is easy.
Ingredients Needed

- Cherry tomatoes: soften and burst creating a sweet roasted sauce.
- Boursin cheese: creamy garlic herb cheese that melts into rich sauce.
- Sea salt: enhances flavor and balances the richness of the dish.
- Red pepper flakes: add gentle heat and a slight spicy kick.
- Black pepper: adds warmth and mild spice to the pasta.
- Olive oil: helps roast ingredients and keeps everything from sticking.
- Cooked pasta: short shapes hold the creamy sauce perfectly.
- Fresh basil leaves: add bright fresh flavor and a pop of color.
- Pasta water or cream: creates a smoother silkier pasta sauce.
- Grated parmesan: adds salty cheesy flavor and extra richness.
- Cooked chicken shrimp or sausage: makes the dish more hearty and filling.
- Lemon juice: adds brightness and balances the creamy flavors
Ingredient Notes
- Cherry tomatoes are essential. They burst as they bake, releasing their juices into the cheese to thin the sauce. Larger tomatoes don’t release liquid the same way and produce a thicker, less saucy result.
- Use already-cooked pasta. Add it after the Boursin and tomatoes finish baking. Trying to bake raw pasta with the cheese doesn’t work in the air fryer — there’s not enough liquid.
- Save some pasta water. Even though you don’t bake the pasta with the cheese, having ¼ cup of starchy pasta water on hand to thin the sauce is a game-changer if it gets too thick.
Equipment
- Air fryer (basket or oven style)
- Air-fryer-safe baking dish (a 6-inch round or 7×5-inch oval works perfectly)
- Pot for boiling pasta
- Spoon or fork for mashing
Instructions

Step 1: Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Cook 4 oz (about 2 cups dry) of your chosen short pasta to al dente per the package directions — usually 8–10 minutes. Reserve ¼ cup of pasta water before draining. This is the texture insurance — keep it on hand. Drain and toss the pasta with a tiny drizzle of olive oil so it doesn’t stick together while you bake the Boursin.

Step 2: Place the unwrapped Boursin block in the center of an air-fryer-safe dish, or in the air fryer basket. Scatter the cherry tomatoes around the cheese, filling the empty space. Drizzle the olive oil over everything. Sprinkle the sea salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes evenly over the tomatoes and cheese.

Step 3: Preheat the air fryer to 320°F for 3 minutes. Place the dish in the basket. Air fry at 320°F for 10–15 minutes, until: The Boursin is soft and visibly melting at the edges. The cherry tomatoes have burst (skins split open) and released their juice. The sauce is bubbling slightly Start checking at the 10-minute mark. Smaller air fryers and tighter dishes cook faster.

Step 4: Carefully remove the dish from the air fryer (use oven mitts). The dish will be hot and the contents bubbly. Using the back of a spoon or a fork, mash the softened Boursin into the burst tomatoes and their juice. Stir vigorously — within 15 seconds you’ll have a smooth, creamy, herb-infused sauce. If the sauce seems too thick, add 1–2 tablespoons of the reserved pasta water and stir.

Step 5: Add the cooked pasta directly to the dish (or transfer everything to a larger bowl). Toss until every piece of pasta is coated with the creamy Boursin sauce.
Step 6: Top with torn fresh basil if you have it. Add a finishing drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of parmesan, or a squeeze of lemon if you want. Serve hot. Like all pasta, this is at its best within 5–10 minutes of being made.

Pro Tips for the Best Boursin Pasta
- Don’t skip the olive oil drizzle over the cheese and tomatoes. It helps the cheese melt evenly and prevents the tomatoes from drying out.
- Use a dish that fits. Too big and the cheese spreads thin; too small and it overflows. A 6-inch round or 7×5-inch oval is ideal.
- Save pasta water. It’s the difference between a perfect sauce and a slightly too-thick one.
- Mash thoroughly. No chunks of unmixed Boursin should remain.
- Eat it fast. Boursin sauce thickens quickly as it cools.
- Add protein at the end (shredded chicken, sautéed shrimp, crumbled sausage) if you want to turn it into a heartier dinner.

Variations
The base recipe is genuinely flexible:
- Add protein: Stir in shredded rotisserie chicken, sautéed shrimp, or crumbled cooked Italian sausage when you add the pasta.
- Boursin & Spinach Pasta: Stir 2 cups of fresh baby spinach into the hot mashed sauce — it’ll wilt instantly.
- Lemon Boursin Pasta: Add 1 teaspoon of lemon zest and a squeeze of lemon juice at the end for brightness.
- Pesto Boursin Pasta: Stir 2 tablespoons of basil pesto into the finished sauce.
- Sun-dried tomato version: Add 2 tablespoons of chopped sun-dried tomatoes to the dish before baking.
- Mushroom Boursin Pasta: Add 1 cup of sliced mushrooms to the dish with the tomatoes.
- Spicy Italian: Use the Cracked Black Pepper Boursin and add 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes (instead of ½).
- Bacon Boursin Pasta: Crumble 4 strips of cooked bacon over the finished pasta.

What Pasta Shape Works Best
Any short pasta with ridges or curves to grab the sauce works. Best to worst:
- Cavatappi (corkscrew shape) — sauce gets trapped in the curls
- Rigatoni — wide tubes hold sauce inside and out
- Penne — classic, never fails
- Fusilli — twists hold the herbs nicely
- Shells — cup the sauce
- Farfalle (bowties) — the sauce coats the edges
- Spaghetti — works but the sauce slides off; not ideal
- Long pasta in general — possible but messier
What to Serve With Boursin Pasta
This is rich enough to be a main on its own, but if you want to round it out:
- A simple green salad with First Watch Lemon Dressing Recipe
- Air Fryer Garlic Bread or Italian Pull-Apart Bread Rolls
- Air Fryer Broccoli With Ranch Seasoning or Air Fryer Weight Watchers Asparagus
- A side of Air Fryer Rosemary Chicken Breast or Frozen Salmon in the Air Fryer — No Thawing, Flaky & Tender in 16 Minutes

Storage and Reheating
This pasta is genuinely best fresh — Boursin sauce thickens significantly as it cools — but if you have leftovers:
- Refrigerator: Up to 3 days in an airtight container.
- Reheating: Add a splash of milk or cream to a saucepan along with the pasta. Heat over low, stirring constantly, until the sauce comes back together. The microwave makes the sauce break — avoid it.
- Freezing: Not recommended. Cream-based pasta sauces separate when thawed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Boursin cheese? Boursin is a soft, spreadable French cheese flavored with garlic, herbs, and pepper. It comes in a small foil-wrapped package and lives in the cheese section near the cream cheese and goat cheese. The Garlic & Fine Herbs variety is the most popular.
What’s the difference between Boursin pasta and feta pasta? Boursin produces a smoother, creamier, more uniformly seasoned sauce because the cheese is already soft and pre-flavored. Feta stays slightly chunky and tangier. Both are great — Boursin is easier and more forgiving.
Can I use the oven instead of the air fryer? Yes — bake at 400°F for 25–30 minutes in an oven-safe baking dish. The air fryer is faster (10–15 min) and uses less energy, but the flavor is identical.
What size pasta serving does this make? 2–3 servings using 4 oz of dry pasta (about 2 cups cooked). Easily doubles for 4–6 servings.
Can I make this gluten-free? Yes — use any gluten-free pasta. The Boursin and other ingredients are naturally gluten-free.
What can I substitute for Boursin? Goat cheese mixed with chopped fresh garlic and herbs comes closest. Cream cheese with herbs also works but isn’t quite the same flavor. Feta makes the original viral version.
Can I make this without tomatoes? Yes, though you’ll lose the saucy element. Substitute ½ cup of heavy cream stirred into the melted Boursin to compensate.
Why are my tomatoes not bursting? Either they’re too large (use cherry or grape, not Roma) or you didn’t cook long enough. They should split open visibly during cooking.
My sauce is too thick — what do I do? Add 1–2 tablespoons of reserved pasta water (or milk, or heavy cream) and stir. Repeat until you hit the consistency you want.
Is Boursin pasta vegetarian? Yes — naturally vegetarian.
Can I add protein? Absolutely. Shredded rotisserie chicken, sautéed shrimp, crumbled Italian sausage, or grilled chicken all work beautifully. Add at the end with the pasta.
Can I make this dairy-free? The recipe is built around the Boursin, so a true dairy-free version requires substituting the entire star ingredient. Try a soft vegan cream cheese with garlic and herbs mixed in — it works but isn’t quite the same flavor.
How long does Boursin pasta keep? 3 days in the refrigerator. Don’t freeze.
