Homemade Nacho Cheese Sauce — We all know nachos are the ultimate game-day food. But did you know that they are also really easy to make at home? This recipe for homemade nacho cheese sauce is so simple and tastes so much better than store-bought!
Not only will your nachos taste amazing, but your kitchen will smell like heaven while this sauce simmers away on the stove. The best part of this recipe is that it’s made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry or fridge, which makes it perfect for when you’re hosting a last-minute dinner party! Just whip up some guacamole and salsa, too, because what would nachos be without them?
After a long day in the kitchen, sometimes you want to relax and enjoy your meal. This homemade nacho cheese sauce is so easy to make, it will be hard not to lick the spoon! Make this recipe for your next football game or party. Enjoy!
There’s nothing like a great bowl of nachos with that perfect gooey cheese sauce dripping off of every chip. The only problem is that store-bought sauces are loaded with preservatives and artificial ingredients that can’t even compare to the taste of making it yourself at home.

What Is Nacho Cheese Sauce?
Nacho cheese sauce is an essential condiment to have on hand for making delicious nachos, but what exactly is it? Nacho cheese sauce contains just a few ingredients, typically cheddar or Monterey jack cheese, milk, and any other optional spices. As the name suggests, this type of canned sauce is perfect for pairing with chips and tortilla chips in particular. You can also use it as a topping over burgers or hot dogs!
Nacho cheese sauce can be used as a dip for tortilla chips or to top nachos. It’s an easy way to add flavor to your favorite party food!
Ingredients Needed For Homemade Nacho Cheese Sauce
- Butter
- All-Purpose Flour
- Milk
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese
- Cayenne Peper (optional)
How To Make Homemade Nacho Cheese Sauce
Over medium-high heat, in a large saucepan, add your butter. Then whisk in the flour and cayenne pepper. If using, continue to simmer until a rue is formed.
Then mix in your milk, continuing to stir, until it’s at a small simmer. Remove from heat, and mix in the cheese. Continue to stir until the cheese is fully melted.
CAN I USE STORE BOUGHT PRE-SHREDDED CHEESE?
If you’re like me, you tend to buy pre-shredded cheese because it cuts down on prep time. The problem is that store-bought pre-shredded cheese has additives that can cause problems when cooking with the cheese.
So, for best results and great melting cheese, I recommend you shred the cheese yourself.
WHAT TYPES OF CHEESE CAN I USE?
You can really use any cheese for this recipe. Some of my favorites are cheddar cheese, Monterey Jack Cheese, Velvetta Cheese, and if you want to make a Taco Bell Nacho Cheese, you can use a white and yellow cheese blend.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO REHEAT NACHO CHEESE SAUCE?
Is your nacho cheese sauce getting cold? The best way to reheat it is in the microwave for 30 seconds. You can also place it on low heat on the stove for 10-15 minutes, but make sure you are constantly stirring so that it does not burn.
