What Are Salmon Patties?

Salmon patties, or salmon cakes or croquettes, are a delightful dish made from canned or fresh salmon. The salmon is mixed with ingredients such as breadcrumbs or crackers, eggs, herbs, and seasonings to create a binding mixture.

This mixture is then shaped into patties and typically pan-fried until golden brown and crispy outside while remaining soft and flavorful. They offer a delicious and convenient way to enjoy the rich flavors of salmon, often served with a side of tartar sauce or aioli for dipping. Salmon patties are versatile and delightful, enjoyed as an appetizer, main course, or sandwich filling.

Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Salmon Cakes

Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below, in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information

  • Canned Salmon: The star of the dish, salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and offers a tender, flaky texture that’s perfect for these patties. You can also use leftover salmon that has been cooked and cooled.
  • Breadcrumbs: These help bind the ingredients together, ensuring your salmon cakes hold their shape while adding a touch of golden crunchiness. You can also use gluten-free bread crumbs, panko bread crumbs,  or crushed pork rinds.
  • Large Eggs: As a binding agent, eggs keep the salmon mixture cohesive and give the cakes a richer flavor.
  • Fresh herbs (like fresh parsley or fresh dill): These aromatic greens elevate the flavor profile of the salmon cakes, adding a refreshing touch and vibrant color.
  • Lemon zest: This imparts a zesty tang to the patties, complementing the salmon’s natural flavors.
  • Spices (such as paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, Old Bay Seasoning, and Kosher salt): These seasonings enhance the natural taste of the salmon, making each bite a flavorful experience.
  • Green onions: Adding a mild, oniony flavor, green onions also introduce a nice color contrast and subtle crunch.
  • Mayonnaise: This creamy ingredient helps to keep the salmon cakes moist while adding a slight tanginess to the mix. You can also use Greek yogurt or sour cream.
  • Serving: Lemon wedges, lemon juice, or homemade tartar sauce.

Pro Tips For Crispy Air Fryer Salmon Patties

  • Quality Matters: Always opt for good quality salmon, whether fresh or canned. Fresh salmon should have a vibrant pink hue and a fresh ocean smell. If using canned salmon, ensure it’s well-drained to prevent excess moisture.
  • Uniform Size: Aim for consistent size and thickness when shaping your patties. This ensures even cooking and that all your patties will be done simultaneously.
  • Avoid Overcrowding: Ensure enough space between each patty in the air fryer. Overcrowding can result in uneven cooking and less crispy patties.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Just like a traditional oven, preheating your air fryer ensures that the cooking starts immediately when the patties are in, leading to a crispier exterior.
  • Dry the Surface: If you’re using fresh salmon, pat it dry before mixing it with other ingredients. This will help in achieving that crispy exterior.
  • Breadcrumbs are Key: Breadcrumbs can add to the crispiness. Consider using panko breadcrumbs for an even crispier texture.
  • Flipping is Essential: Remember to flip the patties halfway through the cooking process. This ensures both sides get that golden brown and crispy texture.
  • Keep an Eye on Them: Air fryers can vary in power and cooking times. Always watch closely, especially the first time you’re making the recipe.
  • Season Generously: Salmon can handle and benefit from a good amount of seasoning. Don’t be shy with herbs and spices, but also ensure you don’t overpower the natural flavors of the salmon.
  • Let Them Rest: After removing the patties from the air fryer, let them rest for a few minutes. This allows the juices to redistribute, making your patties juicy inside with a crispy exterior.

Enjoy your meal, and remember, practice makes perfect. The more you make them, the better they’ll get!

FAQ About Cooking Salmon In Air Fryer

Do I need to preheat my air fryer before cooking salmon patties?

Yes, it’s advisable to preheat your air fryer for about 5 minutes before cooking. This ensures the patties start cooking immediately and get that desired crispy exterior.

Can I use fresh salmon instead of canned salmon for the patties?

Absolutely! Fresh salmon can be used; ensure you remove the skin and bones and finely chop or flake the salmon before mixing it with other ingredients.

How do I know when the salmon patties are done?

The patties should have a golden brown exterior and flake easily when tested with a fork. An internal temperature of 145°F (62.8°C) indicates the salmon is cooked; use an instant-read thermometer or meat thermometer before removing the salmon patties from the air fryer.

How long can I store leftover salmon patties?

Cooked salmon croquettes can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator or wrapped tightly in plastic wrap for up to 3 days. For longer storage, consider freezing them.

Can I cook frozen salmon patties in the air fryer?

Yes, you can cook frozen salmon patties directly in the air fryer. Increase the cooking time by a few minutes and thoroughly cook the middle.

Can I stack salmon patties in the air fryer?

Cooking salmon patties in a single layer is best to ensure even cooking and crispiness. If you stack them, the patties won’t cook evenly.

What can I serve with salmon patties?

Salmon patties pair well with various sides like coleslaw, green salad, roasted vegetables, or even a dip like homemade tartar sauce.

Is cooking salmon patties in an air fryer healthier than traditional frying?

Yes, air frying requires significantly less oil than traditional frying, making it a healthier cooking method that still achieves a crispy texture.

Can I add other ingredients to my salmon patties?

Certainly! To customize the flavor, add ingredients like diced bell peppers, onions, or even different herbs and spices.

What if my salmon patties break apart in the air fryer?

Ensure your mixture is not too wet, and you can add more breadcrumbs or an additional egg to act as a binder. Making sure the patties are compact and well-formed before cooking can also help.

Air fryers can vary in power and design, so it’s always good to watch your food the first time you try a new recipe. Adjustments might be needed based on your specific air fryer model.

  • Parchmetn Paper, optional

Notes

Storing Salmon Patties:
  • Refrigerating: Once the salmon patties have cooled to room temperature, transfer them to an airtight container. They’ll keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
  • Freezing: Place the cooled patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they’re not touching. Freeze for about 1-2 hours until firm. Once solid, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container, separating layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 2 months.
  • Reheating: You can reheat refrigerated or thawed salmon patties in the air fryer at 370°F (185°C) for about 3-4 minutes or until they’re hot and crisp again. If reheating from frozen, it might take a couple of minutes longer.
  • Tip: To maintain the best texture, it’s advisable to reheat the patties in the air fryer rather than the microwave, as the air fryer will restore their crispy exterior.
