What Are Hasselback Potatoes?

Hasselback Potatoes are a simple and easy way to prepare baked potatoes. You can either air fry them or place them into the oven. They will cook up beautifully.

They are easily distinguished from baked potatoes because they have slits for all sorts of goodness, from melted butter, herbs, garlic, and even cheese. Hasselback Potatoes pack a whole lot of flavor in them.

Why Are They Called Hasselback Potatoes?

They are named for the Swedish restaurant, where they were invented back in Hasselbacken, Sweden. That is where Hasselback Potatoes were first served: they were the equivalent of American Baked Potatoes in 1953. They were soon the rage in Sweden, and the rage came across to America, and now everyone in America loves them too!

The air fryer does a great job with air frying them because they are perfectly roasted between the potatoes, where you make slices. Air Fryer Garlic Butter Hasselback Potatoes (1)

Pro Tips

  • Choose the Right Potatoes: Opt for medium-sized russet potatoes for the best results. They have a good balance of starchiness and flavor. Avoid very large potatoes as they can be harder to work with.

  • Use a Sharp Knife: A sharp knife is essential for making clean and precise cuts into the potatoes without tearing or breaking them. Take your time when slicing to ensure even spacing.

  • Soak in Water: Soak the sliced potatoes in cold water for 30 minutes before air frying. This step helps remove excess starch, making the potatoes crispier during cooking.

  • Dry Thoroughly: After soaking, pat the potatoes completely dry with paper towels. This step prevents excess moisture, which can hinder the crisping process.

  • Garlic Butter Infusion: Heat the garlic butter mixture until the garlic is fragrant. This step infuses the butter with garlic flavor, making every potato slice delicious.

  • Evenly Spaced Slices: Ensure the cuts between the slices are evenly spaced. This not only looks appealing but also helps the potatoes cook uniformly.

  • Baste and Season Well: Don’t be shy with the garlic butter. Make sure to generously brush it over every potato surface, getting into each slice—season with salt and pepper for flavor.

  • Check Doneness: Cooking times may vary depending on your air fryer model. Always check the potatoes for doneness by inserting a fork or knife. They should be tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.

  • Use a Skewer or Chopstick: Placing a wooden skewer or chopstick on either side of the potato while slicing can prevent cutting all the way through. It acts as a guide to ensure you don’t accidentally slice too deep.

  • Serve Immediately: Hasselback potatoes are at their best when served fresh from the air fryer. They may lose some crispiness if left to sit for too long.

  • Experiment with Toppings: Feel free to get creative with toppings. Fresh herbs, grated cheese, or a drizzle of sour cream can take your Hasselback potatoes to the next level.

Faq’s

Can I use other potato varieties for this recipe? While russet potatoes are commonly used for Hasselback potatoes due to their starchy texture, you can also try Yukon Gold or red potatoes. Keep in mind that the texture and cooking times may vary slightly.

Can I make these potatoes ahead of time? Hasselback potatoes are best enjoyed right after cooking to maintain their crispiness. However, you can partially prep them by slicing them and soaking them in water in advance. Finish the cooking process just before serving for the best results.

How can I reheat leftover Hasselback potatoes? To reheat leftover potatoes, place them back in the air fryer for a few minutes until they become crispy again. You can also use a conventional oven or toaster oven for reheating.

Can I use olive oil instead of butter? Yes, you can substitute olive oil for butter if you prefer a dairy-free option. Mix the olive oil with minced garlic and your choice of seasonings.

My potatoes turned out unevenly cooked. What went wrong? Inconsistent cooking can happen if the potato slices are not evenly spaced or the air fryer is overcrowded. Ensure the cuts are uniform and allow space between the potatoes to ensure even cooking.

Can I add cheese or other toppings to these potatoes? Absolutely! After brushing the potatoes with garlic butter, you can sprinkle grated cheese, fresh herbs, or breadcrumbs on top before air frying for extra flavor and texture.

Do I have to soak the potatoes before cooking? Soaking the potatoes in cold water removes excess starch and improves crispiness. It’s an important step, but you can skip it if you’re short on time.

Can I use pre-made garlic butter or garlic powder instead of fresh garlic? Yes, you can use pre-made garlic butter or garlic powder for convenience. However, fresh garlic cloves will provide a more intense and aromatic garlic flavor.

Can I make these potatoes in a regular oven? Absolutely! To make Hasselback potatoes in a regular oven, follow the same preparation steps and bake them at around 375°F (190°C) for 45-60 minutes or until they are tender and crispy.

What can I serve with Hasselback potatoes? These potatoes are versatile and pair well with a variety of main dishes. They can be served alongside roasted chicken or grilled steak or as a side for any meal where you’d enjoy potatoes.
