Air Fryer Lemon Turnovers
Air Fryer Lemon Turnovers offers a delightful twist on a classic pastry, combining the tangy zest of lemon with the ease and health benefits of air frying. This recipe transforms the traditional turnover into a light, crispy treat filled with vibrant and creamy lemon curd. Using an air fryer simplifies the cooking process and provides a healthier alternative to deep frying, ensuring each pastry is perfectly golden and crisp without being greasy. These turnovers are ideal for those who love the combination of citrus flavors and flaky pastry but prefer a less indulgent preparation method.
The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and versatility. Whether using store-bought lemon curd or making your own, the rich and tangy filling pairs wonderfully with the buttery puff pastry. Serve them warm, dusted with powdered sugar, and perhaps a cup of tea or coffee on the side, and watch them disappear!
Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Lemon Turnovers
Dive into the delightful world of Air Fryer Lemon Turnovers with a simple yet flavorful array of ingredients. Each component is vital in creating these flaky, zesty pastries, perfect for a quick treat or a special occasion.
- Puff Pastry: The foundation of the turnovers, puff pastry provides a flaky, buttery texture. Opt for pre-made puff pastry for convenience, ensuring it’s thawed properly for easy handling.
- Lemon Curd or Lemon Pie Filling: The star-filling lemon curd brings the turnovers a bright, tangy flavor. You can use store-bought for ease or homemade for a more personalized touch.
- Powdered Sugar: A light dusting of powdered sugar adds a touch of sweetness and an elegant finish to the turnovers, enhancing the lemon’s tartness.
- Egg (Optional): Used for egg washing, it gives the turnovers a beautiful golden color and helps achieve a crispy outer texture when air-fried.
- Optional – Grated Lemon Zest: Adding grated lemon zest to the lemon curd filling intensifies the lemon flavor, giving an extra zing to each bite.
How To Make Air Fryer Lemon Turnovers
Start by laying out the thawed puff pastry on a flat surface. Cut the sheet into 4 squares.
In the center of the puff pastry, add about 2 tablespoons of the pie filling.
Fold the pastry over, making a triangle. Use your fingers to press the dough together. Dip your finger into water and brush it along the edges for the best results.
Set them in the air fryer basket or on the air fryer tray (both sprayed with olive oil to prevent sticking). Set in the air fryer for 5 minutes at 400 degrees F (air fryer setting), flip, and air fry for another 3-5 minutes or until fully cooked.
While the lemon turnovers are cooking, make the icing in a small mixing bowl. Mix the milk and brown sugar and mix until well blended.
Pro Tips
- You do not need to preheat your air fryer to make this recipe.
- If your turnovers are sticking, use a piece of parchment paper or spray the basket with cooking spray.
- A single layer is best; you want to leave plenty of space around the puff pastry, which will help it rise. Therefore, you may need to make these in batches for the best results.
- Use a light cooking spray or an egg wash if you want the top to crisp up.
How To Bake Lemon Turnovers
Of course, anything that you make in the oven, you can make in the air fryer. This batch of Air Fryer Lemon Turnovers is no different. To cook a batch of lemon turnovers in the oven, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, cook in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping halfway during the cooking process. Cook until they are golden brown and fully cooked.
How To Store
If you have leftover turnovers, let them cool to room temperature and place them in an airtight container. They will last for about 1 to 2 days left at room temperature.
You can always reheat them in the air fryer until warmed before reserving.
How To Freeze
There is nothing better than a well-stocked freezer made with tasty treats. So, whether you want to double or triple the recipe, these lemon turnovers will freeze very well.
To freeze, set them on a parchment-lined baking sheet and place the turnovers on the paper. Place the baking sheet into the freezer until they are frozen solid. Remove them and place them into a freezer bag. They will last for about 1 to 2 months. To air-fry frozen lemon turnovers: Place them directly into the air fryer basket, freeze, and air fry for 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees F.
