  • Grated Parmesan Cheese: Parmesan cheese adds a rich and savory flavor, enhancing the overall taste of the dish.

Here’s How to Make Breaded Air Fryer Mushrooms

To make breaded air fryer mushrooms, follow these simple steps:

Here’s How to Make Breaded Air Fryer Mushrooms

Prepare the Mushrooms:

Clean the mushrooms and trim the stems if needed; use a slightly damp paper towel or damp cloth to clean the mushrooms. You can leave them whole or cut them into bite-sized pieces.

Set Up a Breading Station:

In three separate bowls, set up a breading station. Place flour in one, beaten eggs in another, and combine breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, onion powder, garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper in the third bowl. Mix the breadcrumb mixture thoroughly.

Coat the Mushrooms:

Dip each mushroom piece into the flour, ensuring it’s well coated. Shake off any excess flour.

Next, dip the floured mushroom into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off.

Finally, coat the mushroom with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to adhere the crumbs. Make sure the mushroom is fully coated.

Preheat the Air Fryer:

Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190°C) for 2-3 minutes.

Air Fry the Mushrooms:

Place mushrooms in a single layer in the air fryer basket. You may need to do this in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer.

Lightly spray the mushrooms with cooking spray. This helps them get extra crispy.

Set cook time for 7-10 minutes, flipping them halfway through until golden brown and crispy.

Remove the breaded mushrooms from the air fryer and let them cool for a minute. They are best served hot and crispy. Serve your breaded air fryer mushrooms with your favorite dipping sauce, lemon juice, sour cream, marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or aioli.

Recipe Variations

There are several delicious variations you can try to customize your air fryer breaded mushrooms. Here are some ideas:

  • Spicy Breaded Mushrooms: Add some heat to your mushrooms by mixing cayenne pepper or hot sauce into the egg wash or breadcrumb mixture. You can also sprinkle red pepper flakes on top before air frying.
  • Parmesan and Herb Mushrooms: Enhance the flavor with a blend of grated Parmesan cheese, dried herbs (such as basil, Italian seasoning, oregano, and thyme), and garlic powder in your breadcrumb mixture.
  • Panko and Coconut Flakes: For a unique twist, mix panko breadcrumbs with sweet coconut flakes. The coconut adds a subtle sweetness and extra crunch to the coating.
  • Gluten-Free Option: If you prefer a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour, rice flour, almond flour, or even pork panko bread crumbs to coat the mushrooms. Ensure the breadcrumbs are certified gluten-free.
  • Dipping Sauces: Experiment with different dipping sauces, like sriracha mayo, honey mustard, or tzatziki, to complement your breaded mushrooms.
  • Seasoned Salt: Replace regular salt with seasoned salt in the breadcrumb mixture for an added depth of flavor.
  • Mushroom Types: Try different mushroom varieties like shiitake, cremini, or oyster mushrooms to explore various textures and flavors.
  • Marinade: Marinating the mushrooms in your favorite sauce or dressing before breading can infuse them with additional flavors. Teriyaki, balsamic vinaigrette, or soy sauce-based marinades work well.

Feel free to get creative and tailor these air fryer breaded mushrooms to your taste preferences. Enjoy experimenting with different seasonings and coatings to discover your favorite flavor combinations.

Pro Tips For The Best Air-Fried Mushrooms

Achieving the best air-fried mushrooms requires attention to detail and some pro tips. Here’s how to make your mushrooms turn out perfectly:

  • Select Fresh Mushrooms: Start with fresh mushrooms, and make sure they are clean and dry. Moisture can lead to sogginess in the air fryer.
  • Slice Uniformly: For even cooking, slice your larger mushrooms into uniform sizes. If they are too thick, they may not cook through, while very thin slices can become overly crispy.
  • Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer briefly before adding the mushrooms. This helps ensure even cooking and crispy results.
  • Use Panko Breadcrumbs: Panko breadcrumbs tend to create a crispier coating than regular breadcrumbs. They’re perfect for achieving that satisfying crunch.
  • Spray with Cooking Oil: Lightly spray the breaded mushrooms with cooking oil before air frying. This helps them crisp up and turn golden brown. Or use a pastry brush and brush the breaded mushrooms with avocado oil or extra virgin olive oil.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Arrange the mushrooms in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between each piece. Overcrowding can result in uneven cooking.
  • Shake the Basket: Halfway through the cooking time, give the basket a gentle shake to ensure the mushrooms cook evenly on all sides.
  • Check for Doneness: Mushrooms can cook quickly, so keep an eye on them to avoid overcooking. They are done when they turn golden brown and have a crispy texture. Small mushrooms will cook faster than larger mushrooms.
  • Serve Immediately: Enjoy the air-fried mushrooms immediately while they’re at their crispiest. They can lose some of their crunch if they sit for too long.
  • Experiment with Seasonings: Customize your mushrooms with different seasonings and spices to match your flavor preferences. From garlic powder to smoked paprika, there are endless possibilities.

By following these pro tips, you’ll elevate your air-fried mushrooms to a delectable and crispy snack or side dish that everyone will love.

Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190°C) for 2-3 minutes. Air Fry the Mushrooms: Place mushrooms in a single layer in the air fryer basket. You may need to do this in batches, depending on the size of your air fryer. Lightly spray the mushrooms with cooking spray. This helps them get extra crispy. They are best served hot and crispy. Serve your breaded air fryer mushrooms with your favorite dipping sauce, lemon juice, sour cream, marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or aioli.

FAQ’s

Can I use frozen mushrooms in the air fryer? It’s best to use fresh mushrooms for air frying. Frozen mushrooms can release excess moisture and may not achieve the same crispy texture.

Can I reheat leftover air-fried mushrooms? Yes, you can reheat them in the air fryer for a few minutes to regain their crispiness. Alternatively, you can use an oven or toaster oven.

What dipping sauces go well with air-fried mushrooms? Popular dipping sauces include ranch dressing, marinara sauce, aioli, or a simple ketchup and mayo mix. Experiment with your favorite flavors.

Can I use different mushroom varieties for this recipe? Absolutely! While button or cremini mushrooms are common choices, you can use any variety you prefer, such as portobello, shiitake, or oyster mushrooms.

What can I do if my breaded mushrooms turn out too soft? If your mushrooms aren’t crispy enough, try extending the cooking time in the air fryer. Keep a close eye on them to avoid burning.

Can I make air-fried mushrooms ahead of time for a party? While they are best enjoyed fresh, you can prepare them in advance and reheat them in the air fryer just before serving to maintain their crispiness.

Can I make a gluten-free version of breaded mushrooms? Yes, you can substitute gluten-free breadcrumbs or a mixture of crushed gluten-free crackers and seasoning for the breading.

What other seasoning ideas can I try for variety? Get creative with your seasoning choices! Some options include smoked paprika, cayenne pepper for heat, or Italian seasoning for a Mediterranean twist.

Can I make a vegan version of air-fried mushrooms? Absolutely! Replace the eggs with a plant-based egg substitute, such as flaxseed or aquafaba, and use dairy-free Parmesan cheese.

Are air-fried mushrooms a healthy snack option? Air-fried mushrooms are a healthier alternative to deep-fried ones since they use less oil. However, like all fried foods, they should be enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
