What is Poutine?
If you head to any restaurant in Canada and order Poutine, you will soon find that you receive a dish of French Fries covered in brown gravy and cheese curds.
The term poutine comes from the English word Pudding. Since it resembles a pudding dish when added to a plate of French Fries.
You can order Poutine in several ways. Once you head north, some of the most popular variations are:
- Pulled Pork
- Sweet Potato Fries
- Mushroom Gravy
- Bacon Bits
- Sliced Avocados
- Duck
Where Did Poutine Originate
The true Poutine dish can trace its roots back to Quebec. Where it first appeared on the menu around the 1950s.
It started in pubs, bars, and snack bars; then, the popularity grew ever since the restaurant in Canada offers one or two variations on their menus.
Pouting was first served as a 50% ratio of cheese curds and brown gravy and was called mixte.
Why is it Called Poutine
This is one of my favorite things I found out. While writing up this dish, it is Canadian for a mess.

In a saucepan on medium-high, melt the butter and add the beef broth. Once the broth is at a low boil, add the pepper and stir it in. Add the cornstarch and flour one tablespoon at a time, whisking it until desired gravy thickness is achieved.

How to Make the Perfect and Crispy Air Fryer French Fries
If you have ever made homemade Air Fryer French Fries before, you know that there are some key things to do to get a batch of crispy French Fries.
- Use high starch potatoes, my favorites are Russet potatoes, but you can also use Idaho potatoes. They are dense and have less moisture than other potatoes.
- If you want them really crispy, slice the potatoes and then place them into a bowl of ice-cold water for about 20 to 40 minutes.
- Ensure that all French fries are coated with a small amount of olive oil or other cooking sprays.
- Do not crowd the basket. Otherwise, they will never fully crisp up; you may need to run several batches.
