Air Fryer Irish Soda Bread is a no-yeast, no-rise loaf you can mix in 15 minutes and air fry in about 35. It has a craggy golden crust, a soft crumb, and the classic Irish-American mix of golden raisins and caraway. You only need flour, baking soda, buttermilk and a few pantry staples. Bake it at 325°F (163°C) until the center reaches 195°F (90°C).

Growing up in Boston, St. Patrick’s Day meant corned beef, cabbage and a thick slice of soda bread with butter. This is the loaf I make now, without heating the whole oven.

Can You Make Soda Bread in an Air Fryer?

Yes. Soda bread is one of the easiest breads to make in an air fryer because it rises from baking soda, not yeast. The fan browns the crust fast, so the trick is a lower temperature than you’d use in the oven. At 325°F the center cooks through before the top gets too dark.

Why Make Irish Soda Bread in the Air Fryer

  • No yeast, no waiting. The dough goes straight from the bowl to the basket.
  • A better crust. Circulating air gives the scored top a crisp, craggy finish.
  • Less heat in the kitchen. You skip preheating a full-size oven for one loaf.
  • Easy to scale down. Halve the recipe for a small loaf in a 4-quart air fryer (see the FAQ).

Ingredients for Air Fryer Irish Soda Bread

The full amounts, in cups and grams, are in the printable recipe card below.

Ingredients for air fryer Irish soda bread: flour, buttermilk, golden raisins, brown sugar, caraway seeds and baking soda
  • All-purpose flour: Gives a tender crumb. Spoon and level it, or weigh it, so the dough isn’t too dry.
  • Buttermilk: Its acid reacts with the baking soda to lift the bread. No buttermilk? See the substitute below.
  • Baking soda and baking powder: Soda does most of the lifting. Powder adds insurance for a lighter loaf.
  • Golden raisins: Soaking them in the buttermilk keeps them plump and juicy.
  • Brown sugar: A little sweetness and color. Traditional Irish loaves skip it.
  • Caraway seeds: The classic Irish-American flavor. Leave them out if you don’t like their anise note.
  • Cinnamon and vanilla: Warm background flavor for a slightly sweet loaf.
  • Salt: Balances the sweetness and the tang.

Buttermilk substitute: Stir 2 tablespoons of lemon juice or white vinegar into 2 cups of milk. Let it sit 5 minutes until slightly thickened. Plain milk on its own won’t activate the baking soda, and the bread will be flat and taste soapy.

Equipment

  • Basket-style air fryer, 5.8 quarts or larger, or an air fryer oven
  • Parchment paper, trimmed so it doesn’t touch the heating element
  • Instant-read thermometer (the most reliable doneness test)
  • Optional: a 7-inch round cake pan, if your basket is small or shallow

How to Make Irish Soda Bread in the Air Fryer

Golden raisins soaking in buttermilk for Irish soda bread

Step 1: Soak the raisins. Pour the buttermilk over the raisins and add the vanilla. Let them sit while you measure the dry ingredients.

Step 2: Preheat the air fryer. Heat the air fryer to 325°F (163°C) for 3–5 minutes.

Step 3: Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder, brown sugar, salt, caraway and cinnamon in a large bowl.

Step 4: Add the wet ingredients. Pour in the buttermilk and raisins. Stir with a fork just until a shaggy, sticky dough forms.

Step 5: Shape the dough. Turn the dough onto a floured surface. Fold it over itself 4–5 times, about 30 seconds, and pat it into a round about 2 inches tall. Don’t knead it like yeast bread, or it will turn tough.

Step 6: Score the top. Cut a deep cross, about 1/2 inch deep, across the top with a sharp knife. This lets heat reach the center.

Step 7: Air fry. Set the loaf on parchment in the basket and air fry for 20 minutes. If the top is dark, lay a loose piece of foil over it. Cook 15–20 minutes more.

Step 8: Check for doneness. The center should read 195–200°F (90–93°C), and the bottom should sound hollow when tapped.

Step 9: Cool and slice. Let it rest on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes before slicing so the crumb sets.

How to Tell When Air Fryer Soda Bread Is Done

An instant-read thermometer is the surest test. Push it into the thickest part through the side. You want 195–200°F (90–93°C). No thermometer? Tap the bottom of the loaf. A hollow sound means it’s done. A toothpick test can mislead you because the raisins stay moist.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Irish Soda Bread

  • Work fast. Baking soda starts reacting as soon as it gets wet. Get the dough into the air fryer within 5 minutes.
  • Keep the dough sticky. A slightly wet dough bakes up softer. Add flour only to your hands and the counter.
  • Lower the heat, not the time. If the outside browns before the inside is done, drop to 310°F and add a few minutes.
  • Flip if your fryer heats only from the top. Turn the loaf over for the last 5 minutes so the bottom crisps.
  • Let it cool. Slicing it hot makes the crumb gummy.

Easy Variations

Currants or cranberries: Use them one-for-one in place of the raisins

Plain traditional soda bread: Leave out the sugar, raisins, caraway, cinnamon and vanilla. You get the simple four-ingredient loaf served in Ireland.

Whole wheat (brown) soda bread: Swap half the flour for whole wheat flour, and add 2–3 tablespoons more buttermilk.

Cheddar and chive: Skip the raisins, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. Fold in 1 cup sharp cheddar and 2 tablespoons chives.

Traditional vs. American-Style Irish Soda Bread

In Ireland, everyday soda bread is just flour, baking soda, salt and buttermilk. Versions with raisins, sugar and caraway are sometimes called “spotted dog” or “railway cake.” This recipe is the sweeter Irish-American style many of us grew up with. Use the plain variation above if you want the traditional loaf.

What to Serve With Irish Soda Bread

Soda bread is made for butter, jam and anything with gravy. For a full St. Patrick’s Day dinner in the air fryer, serve it with:

Got leftover corned beef? Turn it into an Extra Crispy Air Fryer Reuben Sandwich, Air Fryer Reuben Egg Rolls or Air Fryer Reuben Fritters.

How to Store, Freeze and Reheat Soda Bread

  • Room temperature: Wrap it in a clean towel or keep it in a bread bag for up to 2 days. Soda bread dries out faster than yeast bread.
  • Freeze: Freeze the baked, cooled loaf or individual slices, wrapped well, for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature.
  • Reheat: Warm slices at 300°F (150°C) for 3–4 minutes. More tips are in my guide on how to reheat bread in the air fryer.

Don’t freeze the raw dough. The baking soda reacts as soon as it’s wet, so thawed dough bakes up flat and dense.

Air Fryer Irish Soda Bread FAQs

What temperature do you cook soda bread in an air fryer? Cook it at 325°F (163°C). Higher temperatures brown the crust before the center is baked.

How long does soda bread take in the air fryer? A full loaf takes 35–40 minutes. A half batch takes about 25–30 minutes.

Can I make soda bread in a small air fryer? Yes. Halve the recipe and bake it in a 6- or 7-inch cake pan. Start checking the temperature at 25 minutes.

Can I use self-rising flour? Yes. Use the same amount of self-rising flour and leave out the baking powder and salt. Reduce the baking soda to 1/2 teaspoon so the buttermilk still has something to react with.

Why is my soda bread dense or gummy? The usual causes are overworking the dough, waiting too long before baking, or slicing it hot. Underbaking also leaves a gummy center, so check for 195°F.

Can I make it without raisins? Yes. Leave them out, or use the plain traditional variation above.

Do I need parchment paper? It helps the loaf release cleanly. Without it, spray the basket well with oil. Never preheat the air fryer with loose parchment inside.

Can I make it dairy-free? Use unsweetened oat or soy milk with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice per 2 cups. Let it sit 5 minutes before using.
