What Are Bratwurst?
Bratwurst, a traditional German sausage, is now enjoyed around the world. Made from pork, beef, or veal and seasoned with spices like nutmeg, pepper, coriander, ginger, garlic, and onions, bratwurst is packed with flavor.
It can be boiled, air-fried, smoked, or grilled and is often served hot with mustard, ketchup, horseradish, or even beer. In fast food restaurants, it’s commonly served on a bun as a bratwurst sandwich.
You can typically find bratwurst near the hot dogs and Polish sausage at your local grocery store.

Making brats and peppers in the air fryer is quick and simple! Follow my step-by-step instructions below, and you’ll have a delicious meal ready in minutes. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced cook, these easy-to-follow tips will guide you from start to finish!
Step 1: Prepare the peppers
Using a sharp knife, slice your bell peppers into strips or chunks, depending on your preference. Place them in a large bowl and toss with olive oil and seasonings to coat evenly.
Step 2: Preheat the air fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 370 degrees F for 3-5 minutes to ensure even cooking and a perfect, crisp finish.
Step 3: Air fry
Place the brats and peppers in a single layer in the air fryer basket and cook for 12-15 minutes. For even cooking, flip the sausages a few times using tongs.
Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the sausages. Once it reaches 160 degrees F, they’re ready!
Step 4: Serve and enjoy
Serve the bratwurst and peppers on hot dog buns, brat buns, or hoagie rolls — whatever you prefer. Enjoy!
Air Fryer Brats and Peppers Pro Tips
- Preheat Your Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 370 degrees F before adding the brats. This ensures they cook evenly and stay juicy inside.
- Avoid Overcrowding: Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. If you add too many brats, they may stick together and cook unevenly.
- Flip Your Brats: Flip the bratwurst and peppers every few minutes to ensure even cooking and to prevent them from sticking together.
- Use a Meat Thermometer: To make sure your brats are fully cooked, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part. They should reach at least 160 degrees F. Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer.
- Try Different Sausages: If bratwurst isn’t your favorite, this recipe also works great with Italian or chicken sausage for a lighter twist.
Peppers and Brats FAQs
Avoid piercing the brats before cooking, as it may cause them to lose juices and flavor.
While it’s unlikely, brats can burst if cooked at too high a temperature or if pierced. Cooking them at the right temperature and avoiding piercing helps prevent this.
Yes, it’s a good idea to let the brats rest for a few minutes after cooking. Allowing the meat to rest helps the juices redistribute, keeping the brats tender and juicy. Tent them with foil for about 5 minutes before serving.
Pair them with tangy sauerkraut, creamy potato salad, or coleslaw. For a lighter option, try roasted green beans, Brussels sprouts, or a fresh fruit salad.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Keep them in an airtight container, or wrap them tightly in aluminum foil or plastic wrap.
