Tips for Success?

This delicious, healthy recipe can be handy if you plan to make the pizza roll bites for your kids and don’t want them eating store-bought frozen pizzas where ingredients are unknown.

Spacing: Leave space around the pizza rolls, so the puff pastry can fully cook up. The hot air needs to freely flow around the air fryer basket, causing the puff pastry to puff up!

Liner: You can either use parchment paper to line the basket or use a reusable silicone liner, both will help your dough from sticking to the basket.

Timing: Since every air fryer is slightly different, it’s important that you check on the Pepperoni Basil Tomato Puffs as they cook up. If you find that they are browning too much, too quickly, cover them tightly with aluminum foil, this will help the tops from browning too much.

Air Fryer Oven: If you are using an air fryer oven, it’s best to put them on the last tray, so they do not brown too quickly.

Ingredient Notes:

Dough: While today I used puff pastry, you can also use homemade pizza dough or premade pizza dough. The recipe and timing will not change

Pepperoni: You can omit the pepperoni, for a vegetarian appetizer, or use salami, or chorizo, for a fun twist.

Vegetables: Feel free to add any vegetable that you want, some popular ones are green bell pepper, diced onions, or even mushrooms. Make sure that the vegetables are sauteed before adding them to your tomato puffs.

Serving Suggestions:

Enjoy them dipped near a pizza sauce, tomato sauce, garlicky tzatziki sauce or you can eat them as is. They’re perfect for snacking on the go and would make an awesome addition to your next gathering!

Make Ahead, Storage and Heating:

How To Store:

For best results, let them cool to room temperature, and then cover your leftovers, or place them into an airtight container. Placed into the refrigerator they will keep fresh for about 3 days in the fridge.

How To Freeze:

This works well as a ready-cooked snack or a pre-made but not cooked snack.

Freeze The Uncooked: If you want to freeze them uncooked, assemble them and then place them onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, and freeze them until frozen solid. Remove them and place them into a freezer bag or freezer-safe container, and they will last for about 2 to 3 months.

Freezing Them Cooked: Let them cool to room temperature and then place them into an airtight container. They will last for 1 to 2 months.

Heating:

You can warm up the frozen tomato puffs in a microwave for about 5 to 8 minutes, or you reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F (180 °C) until golden brown and crispy—they are delicious this way!
