This Air Fryer Old-Fashioned Liver and Onions recipe delivers perfectly tender calf liver and caramelized onions with a fraction of the mess of stovetop frying. By using the air fryer, you achieve that classic, nostalgic flavor and a delicate golden crust in under 15 minutes.

There is nothing quite like the savory, heart-warming comfort of a traditional home-cooked meal, but many people avoid this classic dish because of the smoky kitchen and oil splatter it usually requires.
That is why I am so excited to share this foolproof method for Air Fryer Old-Fashioned Liver and Onions, which preserves the silky texture and rich flavor you remember without all the fuss.
By combining the heat of an air fryer, you can enjoy a nutrient-dense, “just like Grandma made” dinner that is ready in a flash and requires almost zero cleanup.

How To Make Air Fryer Liver and Onions

Step One: Pat baby calf’s liver slices dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and a pinch of dry mustard.

Step 2: Peel and cut onions into rings. Toss lightly with a bit of salt and pepper.

Step 3: Set your air fryer temperature to 375 degrees F (190°C) and let it preheat for 3–5 minutes.

Step 4: Place the liver slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Top with onion rings, spreading evenly over the liver.

Step 5: Cook at 375°F for 8–12 minutes, flipping the liver halfway through. Onions should be soft and slightly caramelized, and liver cooked through but tender.
Step 6: Remove liver and onions from the basket and plate immediately. Serve with mashed potatoes, sautéed vegetables, or crusty bread for a classic comfort meal.

Easy Air Fryer Liver And Onions Recipe Tips
- Choose Fresh Liver: Select tender baby calf’s liver for the best flavor and texture.
- Pat Dry: Dry the liver slices before seasoning to help them sear properly in the air fryer.
- Season Well: Use salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and dry mustard for a rich, savory flavor.
- Don’t Overcrowd: Arrange liver slices in a single layer with onions on top for even cooking.
- Monitor Cooking Time: Cook 8–12 minutes depending on thickness to avoid overcooking and toughness.
- Caramelize Onions: Let the onions soften and brown slightly for sweet, savory balance.
- Serve Immediately: Liver is best enjoyed right out of the air fryer with classic sides like mashed potatoes or sautéed veggies.
Storing, Freezing and Reheating Instructions
- Storing: Place cooled liver and onions in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Keeping them sealed helps maintain tenderness and flavor.
- Freezing: Wrap liver and onions tightly in foil or place in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 1 month for best quality.
- Reheating: Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until warmed through. Alternatively, microwave for 1–2 minutes, though the texture may be slightly softer.

Easy Air Fryer Liver and Onions Recipe Faqs
Can I use other types of liver? Yes! Beef or calf liver works best, but chicken liver can be used—adjust cooking time as it’s thinner.
How do I prevent liver from being tough? Pat the liver dry, don’t overcook, and slice evenly to maintain tenderness.
Can I make this ahead of time? You can prep and season the liver and onions ahead, but cook just before serving for best texture.
Can I add other seasonings? Absolutely! Fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary, or a splash of Worcestershire sauce, enhance the flavor.
What should I serve with it? Classic sides include mashed potatoes, sautéed vegetables, or crusty bread.
Can I freeze leftovers? Yes, wrap tightly in foil or store in a freezer-safe container for up to 1 month.
How do I reheat without drying out the liver? Reheat gently in the air fryer at 350°F for 3–5 minutes or in the microwave for 1–2 minutes.

I was impressed! Tender and flavorful. The onions were still crunchy. Seasonings were just right. Will definitely make again.

It is so good!
I even used some of the juice.
Put in 1/2 of the seasonings,

This sounds great. Unfortunately, onions give me horrible heartburn. Is there anything else I could substitute for the onion? Thank you for your help.
Diane Wray
How about trying some bacon and mushrooms? They could work well together.
Sally
Loved this recipe!
Followed it exactly except when I put the onions in I went ahead and cooked them for 4 minutes then added the liver on top and cooked for 7 minutes.
So easy and delicious.

Not much can beat liver and onions in a rich gravy for taste. In Britain, it often accompanies streaky bacon and sausages, typically alongside mashed potatoes, with either cabbage or peas. Maybe, as you say, beef liver is tough in the USA. Here in Britain, where we call it ox liver, I’ve always found it tender and full of flavour—and way cheaper than calf’s liver. Most male cattle don’t live into old age anyway, so the calf/ox divide may often be academic.

Followed recipe exactly Enjoyed it very much. But next time will use a red onion and cook the onion for 4 mins first then add and cook the liver this will save me from keeping the cooked liver warm.

Didn’t expect to find this old fashioned recipe for an air fryer but it worked well. For the last four minutes for the onions I added some bacon. Very enjoyable
