This honey orange shrimp is my answer to takeout night. The shrimp get a light cornstarch coat, crisp up in the air fryer in about 6 minutes, and then go straight into a sticky glaze made from honey, fresh orange, garlic, soy sauce and red pepper flakes. Sweet first, then the heat kicks in. That’s the “firecracker” part.

The whole thing is on the table in 18 minutes, and you need just one small saucepan besides your air fryer. Spoon it over a bowl of Instant Pot Coconut Jasmine Rice and dinner is done.
If you love sweet-heat seafood, the same flavor idea works beautifully on fish, too. Try my Air Fryer Firecracker Salmon next.

Why This Honey Orange Shrimp Recipe Works
- Adjustable heat. Red pepper flakes give a gentle kick. Add sriracha if you want true firecracker heat.
- Cornstarch, not batter. A thin, dry cornstarch coat crisps fast in the air fryer and grabs onto the glaze. A wet batter would steam and turn soft.
- The sauce cooks separately. Simmering the honey-orange glaze in a saucepan thickens it to a sticky coat. Brushing raw sauce on shrimp in the basket just burns the honey.
- Zest and juice. Orange juice brings brightness, but the zest carries the real orange flavor, so this tastes like orange and not just sweet.
Ingredients for Air Fryer Honey Orange Firecracker Shrimp

For the shrimp
- Shrimp: Large raw shrimp (16–20 count), peeled and deveined. Thaw frozen shrimp first and pat them very dry.
- Cornstarch: Gives the shrimp a crisp shell that holds the glaze.
- Olive oil spray: A light spray on the basket and on top of the shrimp helps the cornstarch turn golden instead of chalky.
For the honey orange firecracker sauce
- Honey: The base of the glaze; it caramelizes and turns sticky as it simmers.
- Orange zest and orange juice: Use one fresh orange for both if you can.
- Garlic: Fresh minced garlic adds savory depth.
- Soy sauce: Salty umami that balances the honey. Use tamari for gluten-free.
- Red pepper flakes: The firecracker heat. Start with ½ teaspoon.
- Sriracha (optional): 1–2 teaspoons for a spicier honey orange shrimp.
To serve: sliced green onions, sesame seeds and steamed rice.
How to Make Honey Orange Shrimp in the Air Fryer

Step 1: Preheat. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F for 3–5 minutes.
Step 2: Make the sauce. In a small saucepan, whisk the honey, orange zest, orange juice, garlic, soy sauce, red pepper flakes and sriracha (if using). Set it aside off the heat for now.

Step 3: Coat the shrimp. Pat the shrimp dry with paper towels. Toss them in cornstarch and shake off the excess. You want a thin, even dusting, not clumps.

Step 4: Air fry. Spray the basket, add the shrimp in a single layer and spray the tops. Air fry at 400°F for 5–8 minutes, flipping halfway, until the shrimp are pink, opaque and lightly golden. Work in batches so the basket isn’t crowded.
Step 5: Thicken the glaze. While the shrimp cook, bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat. Cook 2–4 minutes, stirring, until it coats the back of a spoon. It thickens more as it cools.
Step 6: Toss and serve. Toss the hot shrimp in the glaze right away. Top with green onions and sesame seeds and serve over rice.

Pro Tips for Crispy Firecracker Shrimp
- Dry shrimp = crispy shrimp. Any moisture turns the cornstarch gummy.
- Coat right before cooking. Cornstarch-coated shrimp that sit too long get pasty.
- Don’t skip the spray. Dry cornstarch won’t brown on its own.
- Sauce at the last second. Toss and serve immediately so the coating stays crisp.
- Watch the honey. Keep the sauce at a gentle simmer; honey scorches quickly over high heat.
- Pull them early. Large shrimp can go from juicy to rubbery in a minute. Check at 5 minutes.
How to Make It Spicier (or Milder)
- More firecracker heat: Add 1–2 teaspoons sriracha or chili garlic sauce to the glaze, or bump the red pepper flakes to 1 teaspoon.
- Kid-friendly: Skip the pepper flakes entirely; you’ll have a simple honey orange shrimp.
- Creamy and spicy: If you like a mayo-based kick, my Copycat PF Chang’s Dynamite Shrimp is the one to make.
- Cajun-style heat: For a totally different spice profile, try my Cheesecake Factory Copycat New Orleans Cajun Shrimp.

What to Serve With Honey Orange Shrimp
Rice is the classic pairing because it soaks up every drop of the glaze. My Instant Pot Pork Fried Rice turns this into a full takeout-style meal, and coconut jasmine rice plays up the citrus.
For something green, add a tray of Air Fryer Roasted Vegetables or Ninja Foodi Grill Asparagus.

Storing and Reheating
- Fridge: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- Reheat: Air fry at 350°F for 2–3 minutes until hot. The coating won’t be as crisp as fresh, but it’s far better than the microwave.
- Make ahead: Make the sauce up to 3 days ahead and refrigerate. Rewarm it in the saucepan while the shrimp cook.
- Freezing: Not recommended once glazed; the coating turns soggy.

Honey Orange Shrimp FAQs
Can I use frozen shrimp? Yes, but thaw them completely first. Overnight in the fridge works, or a bowl of cold water for 15–20 minutes. Pat them very dry, or the cornstarch won’t stick.
Why isn’t my shrimp crispy? Usually one of three things: the shrimp were wet, the basket was crowded, or the coating wasn’t sprayed with oil. Cook in a single layer and spray both the basket and the tops.
Can I make honey orange shrimp in the oven? Yes. Bake the coated, sprayed shrimp on a parchment-lined sheet pan at 425°F for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway. Then toss in the glaze.
Can I make it in a skillet instead? Yes. Pan-fry the cornstarch-coated shrimp in 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat, about 2 minutes per side. Then pour in the sauce and simmer until sticky.
Can I use bottled orange juice? Yes, for the juice. Still zest a fresh orange if you can, because most of the orange flavor comes from the zest.
Is this recipe gluten-free? It is when you use tamari or a gluten-free soy sauce. Cornstarch is naturally gluten-free.
What’s the difference between firecracker shrimp and honey garlic shrimp? Firecracker shrimp has a sweet-and-spicy glaze with chili heat; this version adds orange. Honey garlic shrimp is sweet and savory with little or no heat.
Can I use other fish? The same glaze is great on mild white fish. Try it on my Air Fryer Mahi Mahi, or go with salmon and my Air Fryer Copycat Applebee’s Honey Grilled Salmon.
