Mixing flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper, black pepper, and salt to make Cajun spice blend.

Spraying air fryer basket and coated flounder fillets with cooking spray, then air frying at 400°F for golden brown results.

Step Three: Spray your air fryer basket with cooking spray, then place your coated fillets into the basket. Spray VERY GENEROUSLY (the entire coating) with cooking spray; set the temperature to 400 degrees F, air fry for 5 minutes, flip and SPRAY again with cooking spray, and air fry for another 3 to 5 minutes until golden brown. (Use the air fryer setting)

Note: If you do not use cooking spray and coat the entire flour coating, you will end up with dry spots or patches of white.

    Popeyes Fish Sandwich Recipe Tips

    • Use Fresh Fish: For the best texture and flavor, use fresh white fish like flounder, cod, or tilapia. These types of fish fry well and give you that crispy, tender bite you love in a fish sandwich.
    • Double Dipping: For an extra crispy coating, dip the fish fillets in the batter twice. First, coat in the flour mixture, then dip in the wet batter before coating again in the flour.
    • Seasoning the Flour: Don’t skip the seasoning in your flour mix! Adding garlic powder, paprika, cayenne, and salt will give the fish fillets that signature Popeyes flavor.
    • Let the Fish Rest: After frying, let the fish rest on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil, ensuring it stays crispy.
    • Customize Your Toppings: While the classic Popeyes Fish Sandwich uses pickles and tartar sauce, feel free to add other toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, or a spicy mayo for extra flavor.
    • Use a Soft Bun: For the perfect sandwich, use a soft, lightly toasted brioche or potato bun to complement the crispy fish fillets and tangy sauce.

    Storing & Reheating

    • Storing: Store any leftover Popeyes Fish Sandwich in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Keep the fish separate from the bun and sauce to maintain the sandwich’s texture.
    • Reheating: To reheat, place the fish fillets in the air fryer at 375°F for 3-5 minutes until crispy. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the breading soggy.
