  • Refrigerated Pie Crust: These store-bought pie crusts serve as the delicious, flaky foundation for apple cheddar pies.
  • Apples: Choose your favorite variety of apples, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, to provide a sweet and tart filling for the pies.
  • Butter: Creates the syrup for the hand pies.
  • Brown Sugar: Sugar sweetens the apple filling, enhancing its natural flavors and creating a delectable syrup.
  • Ground Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon brings warmth and a cozy, spiced flavor to the apple cheddar filling.
  • Ground Nutmeg: Brings out the flavors of the apples.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract: Adds a bright and tangy element to the filling, balancing the sweetness.
  • Cornstarch: Cornstarch acts as a thickening agent, helping to bind the apple filling and prevent excess liquid.
  • White Cheddar Cheese: Sharp cheddar cheese adds a savory depth and a creamy texture that pairs beautifully with the apples.
  • Egg and Water: An egg wash with beaten egg and water gives the pies a glossy, golden-brown finish.

Pro Tips:

  • This recipe will work in any Air Fryer, including Basket and Oven Models. I have also made this several times in the Ninja Foodi, Instant Pot Crisp Lid, and the Mealthy Lid. The recipe will remain the same. The cooking time may vary.
  • Try to make the Air Fryer Apple Cheddar Pies all about the same size so they all cook up simultaneously.
  • You can use any cheese, I went for the classic cheddar cheese, but any of your favorite cheeses would work.
  • Add a few slits into the pie dough, which will help some steam escape.
  • If the hand pies stick to the basket, use a piece of parchment paper.

What Apples Should I Use?

I prefer to use baking apples, which I find to keep their shape a bit more than other apples. Some great apples to use are Granny Smith, Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala Apples.

I would recommend that you peel the apples. This way, you have a great and tender filling.

How To Store

Let the hand pies cool to room temperature and then place them into an airtight container and store them at room temperature or in the refrigerator. They will last for about 2 to 3 days.

You can always reheat them right before serving.

Can I Freeze Handheld Pies?

Yes, this is a great Air Fryer Freezer Dessert; they freeze beautifully. Follow the directions below, and then let them cool to room temperature.

Then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and place the baking sheet into the freezer until frozen solid. Then remove and place into a freezer bag or freezer-safe container.

They will last for about 1 to 2 months.

You can either defrost them at room temperature or place them in the refrigerator overnight.

Best Toppings

Today, I used a simple egg wash, but you can top them off with coarse sugar, powdered glaze icing, or caramel sauce.

YOu can serve these with vanilla ice cream, yogurt, or a bowl of fresh fruit! These go with just about anything!
