Air Fryer Apple Cheddar Pies — Apples are in season, and the best way to celebrate is with an apple cheddar pie. This recipe is great for when you’re craving something sweet but want to avoid baking because of the heat. Your guests will love these pies! They can be eaten alone or with ice cream or whipped cream on top.

The pie dough is flaky and buttery, and a warm cheddar and apple pie filling is in the middle of the pastry!

What is Apple Cheddar Pie?

Apple Cheddar Pies are a great combination. The apples and the cheddar cheese create a great combination. You end up with a rich and savory kicked-up apple pie. That is so good!

Today, I added a simple white cheddar cheese, which blends nicely with the apples. You end up with a luxurious dessert.

How To Make Air Fryer Apple Cheddar Pies

Cut Out Circles From Dough

Spray your air fryer basket with cooking spray and set it aside. Unroll the pie dough and cut out 3-inch circles with a glass or cookie cutter to create 10-12 circles.

Place the dough circles into the refrigerator to chill while preparing the filling.

Add the apples, melted butter, and brown sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Cook for 4-5 minutes until the apples soften and the butter mixture thickens.

Air Fryer Apple Cheddar Pies Filling in Bowl

Pour the cooked apples into a medium bowl, along with the cheddar cheese, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and cornstarch. Toss them together to combine.

Remove the dough circles from the fridge and line them on a cutting board. Add two tablespoons of the apple cheese mixture to the center of half of the dough circles.

Place the remaining dough circles over the top of each circle with filling, and use a fork to seal the seams.  Slit 2-3 small steam vents in the center of each mini pie.  Whisk the egg with the water and lightly brush each pie with the mixture.

Air Fryer Apple Cheddar Pies In Air Fryer Basket

Place several pies in your air fryer basket and cook on the air fryer setting at 350 degrees F, air fryer setting, for 8-10 minutes or until the dough is cooked through and golden brown.

Allow cooling for several minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Pro Tips:

  • This recipe will work in any Air Fryer, including Basket and Oven Models. I have also made this several times in the Ninja Foodi, Instant Pot Crisp Lid, and the Mealthy Lid. The recipe will remain the same. The cooking time may vary.
  • Try to make the Air Fryer Apple Cheddar Pies all about the same size so they all cook up simultaneously.
  • You can use any cheese, I went for the classic cheddar cheese, but any of your favorite cheeses would work.
  • Add a few slits into the pie dough, which will help some steam escape.
  • If the hand pies stick to the basket, use a piece of parchment paper.

WHAT TYPE OF APPLES SHOULD I USE?

I prefer to use baking apples, which I find to keep their shape a bit more than other apples. Some great apples to use are Granny Smith, Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala Apples.

I would recommend that you peel the apples. This way, you have a great and tender filling.

HOW DO YOU STORE THEM?

Let the hand pies cool to room temperature and then place them into an airtight container and store them at room temperature or in the refrigerator. They will last for about 2 to 3 days.

You can always reheat them right before serving.

CAN I FREEZE THESE HANDHELD PIES?

Yes, this is a great Air Fryer Freezer Dessert; they freeze beautifully. Follow the directions below, and then let them cool to room temperature.

Then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, and place the baking sheet into the freezer until frozen solid. Then remove and place into a freezer bag or freezer-safe container.

They will last for about 1 to 2 months.

You can either defrost them at room temperature or place them in the refrigerator overnight.

WHAT CAN YOU TOP THESE WITH?

Today, I used a simple egg wash, but you can top them off with coarse sugar, powdered glaze icing, or caramel sauce.

YOu can serve these with vanilla ice cream, yogurt, or a bowl of fresh fruit! These go with just about anything!
