Air Fryer Chocolate Muffins are light and fluffy, deeply chocolatey, and ready in about 22 minutes, with no need to heat up the oven. A low 320°F bakes the centers all the way through before the tops can scorch, and a handful of chocolate chips melts into gooey pockets in every bite.

I’ve been making these since 2018, and after about 10 batches in my new Ninja Crispi Air Fryer, I’ve worked out the details that make or break air fryer muffins: the right cup size, how many fit in the basket, and which setting to use.

Why You’ll Love These Muffins

  • No oven needed. Perfect for hot days, small kitchens, or when you only want a few muffins.
  • Bakery-soft texture. Melted butter and milk keep the crumb tender for days.
  • Double the chocolate. Cocoa in the batter plus melty chocolate chips.
  • Freezer friendly. Bake a batch and grab one for breakfast all week.

Ingredients Needed

Full amounts are in the recipe card below.

Ingredients for air fryer chocolate muffins: flour, sugar, cocoa, eggs, milk, butter and chocolate chips
  • Cocoa powder: Natural unsweetened cocoa works with the baking soda in this recipe. Dutch-process cocoa gives a darker color and milder flavor; if you use it, the muffins may rise slightly less.
  • Eggs and milk: Use them at room temperature so the melted butter doesn’t seize into clumps.
  • Butter: Melt it, then let it cool for 5 minutes before mixing.
  • Chocolate chips: Semi-sweet is classic. Toss them in a teaspoon of flour so they don’t sink.
  • Silicone muffin cups: They’re the easiest option in an air fryer because you can place as many as your basket fits. A metal tin rarely fits a basket.

How to Make Air Fryer Chocolate Muffins

Whisking flour, cocoa powder and sugar for chocolate muffin batter

Step 1: Preheat. Set the air fryer to 320°F and let it heat for 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 2: Mix the dry ingredients. Whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and baking powder in a large bowl.

Step 3: Mix the wet ingredients. In a second bowl, whisk milk, eggs, vanilla, and the cooled melted butter until smooth.

Step 4: Combine. Pour wet into dry and stir just until no dry flour remains. A few lumps are fine. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Step 5: Fill the cups. Lightly grease silicone cups and fill each about two-thirds full.

Step 6: Air fry. Arrange cups in a single layer with a little space between them. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until a toothpick in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs but no wet batter.

Step 7: Cool. Let the muffins rest in the cups for 5 minutes, then lift them out.

How Long to Cook Muffins in the Air Fryer

Cup sizeTemperatureTime
Mini320°F[6 to 8 minutes]
Standard320°F10 to 12 minutes
Jumbo300°F[15 to 18 minutes]

Air fryers vary, so check at the shortest time. If the tops are browning before the centers set, lay a loose sheet of foil over the cups for the last few minutes.

Air Fry or Bake Setting?

Either works. The bake setting on most air fryers runs the fan more gently, which gives a slightly taller, more even dome. On air fry, the stronger fan can crack or darken the tops, so drop the temperature by about 10°F.

How Many Muffins Fit in the Air Fryer?

This recipe makes [12 standard muffins]. Most 5 to 6 quart baskets hold 6 to 7 standard silicone cups, so you’ll bake in two batches. Keep the second batch of batter at room temperature while the first bakes; it will be fine for 15 minutes.

Variations

  • Extra chocolate: Add 2 tablespoons more cocoa and 1 to 2 tablespoons more milk so the batter doesn’t dry out.
  • Mocha: Stir 1 teaspoon of instant espresso powder into the wet ingredients.
  • Nutty: Fold in 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans.
  • Berry: Swap half the chips for fresh raspberries.
  • Gluten-free: Use a 1:1 gluten-free baking flour.
  • Dairy-free: Use oat milk and melted coconut oil or dairy-free butter.

Troubleshooting

  • Tops burnt, center raw: The temperature is too high or cups are overfilled. Lower to 300°F and fill two-thirds full.
  • Muffins sank: Usually underbaked or the basket was opened too early. Wait until at least 8 minutes before checking.
  • Dense or tough: The batter was overmixed. Stir only until the flour disappears.
  • Cups tipped over: Silicone cups can slide in a strong fan. Place them close together or set them on a small pan.

Storing and Reheating

  • Room temperature: Airtight container for up to 2 days.
  • Refrigerator: Up to 4 days; bring to room temperature before eating.
  • Freezer: Wrap individually and freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Reheat: 300°F in the air fryer for 2 to 3 minutes, or 15 to 20 seconds in the microwave.

Air Fryer Chocolate Muffin FAQs

Can I use a regular muffin tin in the air fryer? Only if it fits with space around it for airflow. Silicone cups or small oven-safe ramekins work better in most baskets.

Should I use the air fry or bake setting? Bake gives a more even rise if your model has it. On air fry, lower the temperature by about 10°F.

How do I know the muffins are done? A toothpick in the center should come out with a few moist crumbs and no wet batter. The tops should spring back when pressed.

Can I make these ahead? Yes. Bake, cool completely, and freeze. Reheat straight from frozen in the air fryer at 300°F for 4 to 5 minutes.

Can I use a boxed mix instead? Yes; see my Betty Crocker muffin mix version for times.
