How To Make Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake Crack

Saltine crackers arranged in single layer on baking sheet

Step One: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet and set aside.

Step Two: In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar and butter. Heat over medium-high until the butter melts and the mixture starts to simmer. Let the sugar and butter mixture simmer for about 5 minutes until it thickens slightly.

Step Three: Pour the caramel mixture evenly over the saltine crackers, making sure each cracker is coated. Bake for about 5 minutes; the caramel will be bubbling.

Step Four: Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle white chocolate chips evenly over the hot caramel. Let the chocolate chips sit for 1–2 minutes to soften, then spread them evenly over the toffee.

Step Five: Sprinkle green sanding sugar on top for a festive touch. Use red cookie icing to pipe lines across the bark, creating a Christmas Tree Cake look.

Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake Crack Recipe Tips

  • Line your baking sheet well: Parchment paper prevents sticking and makes cleanup easy.
  • Even layer of crackers: Keeps caramel coverage uniform and ensures every piece is coated.
  • Simmer the caramel carefully: Don’t let it burn; keep medium-high heat and stir often.
  • Work quickly with chocolate chips: Sprinkle while caramel is hot so chips melt properly.
  • Smooth chocolate gently: Use a spatula or back of spoon for even coverage.
  • Decorate while slightly warm: Icing and sanding sugar stick best before chocolate fully hardens.
  • Let it cool completely: For the crunchiest bark that snaps cleanly.
  • Customize toppings: Add sprinkles, crushed candies, or extra drizzle for festive flair.

Storing Instructions

  • Room Temperature: Allow the bark to cool completely and harden. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Freezing: Place the cooled bark in a single layer between sheets of parchment or wax paper in a freezer-safe container or bag. Freeze for up to 2 months.
  • Storing Tips: Let frozen bark come to room temperature before serving to retain its crunch. Avoid storing in the fridge, as moisture can make the bark soft and sticky.

Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cake Crack Recipe Faqs

Why is it called “Crack”? This dessert is often called “Crack” because it is highly addictive and incredibly difficult to stop eating! The combination of salty crackers, sweet caramel, and creamy chocolate/icing makes it irresistible.

Can I use graham crackers? Yes, you can! The “crack” recipes often use saltines (or pretzels) to provide a necessary salty contrast to the very sweet toppings. Graham crackers provide a slightly sweeter, more traditional base.

How do I get the perfect “crack” texture? The texture comes from the cracker base combined with the brittle-like caramel layer. You must bake the caramel/butter mixture on the crackers until it is bubbly and set before adding the topping.

What kind of chocolate or icing works best? White melting chocolate (like almond bark or white chips mixed with a little shortening/oil) works best for a smooth, thick coating that sets up quickly and mirrors the look of the actual Little Debbie cakes.

Can I use actual Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes in the recipe? This recipe is a copycat version designed to replicate the flavor using crackers and chocolate/icing. You wouldn’t typically use the actual cakes in the recipe, but you could crush them and sprinkle them on top for a fun garnish!

Why is my topping not setting up hard? This usually means the white chocolate/icing layer didn’t cool long enough or wasn’t tempered properly. Ensure you allow the sheet to cool completely (ideally in the fridge or freezer for 30 minutes) before breaking it apart.
