I know you’ve been hearing a lot about air fryers. You might think, “What the heck is an air fryer?” If your curiosity has gotten the best of you and you want to know more about this new appliance that everyone seems to have, check out everything I have made over the years! So many recipes, and all cooked to perfection in the air fryer!

Air fryers are small appliances that use hot air instead of oil or butter to cook food. They’re similar in size and shape to a microwave, but they don’t just heat food–they cook it too. Air frying doesn’t require any added fat, so dishes can come out crispier than cooked in an oven or stovetop because all the moisture from ingredients evaporates during cooking. It’s perfect for people who love fried food without all of the guilt.

What Are Red Velvet Scones

Red Velvet Scones are a delightful and visually striking variation of traditional scones infused with red velvet cake’s classic flavors and colors. These scones merge the rich, slightly cocoa-flavored taste of red velvet with the dense, buttery, and slightly crumbly texture of scones. Here’s what makes them unique:

  • Distinctive Color: Much like red velvet cake, these scones are known for their vibrant red color, typically achieved using red food coloring. The deep red hue makes them particularly appealing and visually striking.
  • Cocoa Flavor: Red velvet recipes include a small amount of cocoa powder, giving the scones a subtle chocolate flavor distinct from regular chocolate baked goods. Its delicate balance offers a hint of cocoa without overpowering the other flavors.
  • Buttermilk and Butter Texture: The use of buttermilk and butter in the dough contributes to a tender, rich texture. The buttermilk also adds a slight tanginess, a hallmark of red velvet desserts.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting or Glaze: Red velvet scones are often topped with a cream cheese frosting or glaze, mirroring the classic frosting used on red velvet cake. This addition complements the flavors in the scone and adds a creamy, sweet finish.
  • Versatile Treat: Red velvet scones can be enjoyed as a breakfast item, a coffee or tea snack, or even a dessert. Thanks to their festive color, they are particularly popular around holidays like Valentine’s Day or Christmas.
  • Adaptable Recipe: While they follow the basic method of scone-making, these scones can be adapted with additions like white chocolate chips or a sprinkle of powdered sugar on top for extra sweetness and texture.

Red Velvet Scones offers a delightful combination of aesthetics and flavor, making them a unique and tasty twist on traditional scone recipes. They are perfect for those who love the flavor of red velvet but are looking for something a little different from the usual cake or cupcake.

Ingredient Notes

  • Cake Mix: You can use any cake mix flavor that you want. You can also use a Gluten-Free Red Velvet Cake Mix and the same recipe! My favorite brand is Heartland Gourmet, which has a great selection of Gluten-Free Products. You can also make this recipe with a keto and low-carb cake mix, such as No-Sugar, Low-Carb Red Velvet Cake Mix (which is also gluten-free, Vegan, Paleo, and KETO)
  • Note: if you change the cake mix, change the gluten-free flour or a low-carb (keto-friendly) option.
  • Flour: Use all-purpose flour or change to gluten-free all-purpose flour. The measurements will remain the same.
  • Pan: You can use a scone pan that fits your air fryer, free-form it or even make it into biscuits using a biscuit cutter. Any type will work.
  • Cold Butter: To get the classic texture of a scone, it’s best to use cold or even frozen butter and grate it into your batter. This will cause pockets of butter to be found in your scone. It tastes amazing!

Can I Make The Dough In Advance?

You can make the dough and place it into your scone pan, cover, and refrigerator. This way, you can air fry your scone batter when you wake up! This makes for a great and easy breakfast or dessert!

Serving Suggestions

British English scones are typically served with jam, butter, or clotted cream. Today, I added a great cream cheese frosting, but you can eat them plain or scatter some butter. They are fantastic with a smear of cream cheese! Oh, so good!

How To Store

If you have any leftover Air Fryer Red Velvet Scones, let them cool to room temperature, and then place them into an airtight container. They will last for 2 to 4 days in the refrigerator. You can reheat them in the microwave or air fryer right before serving.

How To Freeze

This is a great freezer meal, and you can make a double or even triple batch and freeze some. Let the scones cool to room temperature, and then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Place the baking sheet into the freezer and freeze until frozen solid. Remove and put into a freezer-safe container or a freezer bag! They will last for 2 to 3 months. For best results, let them thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

Faq’s

Can I make Air Fryer Red Velvet Scones without food coloring? Yes, you can make them without food coloring. The scones will still have the same flavor but not the characteristic red velvet color.

How do I know when the scones are done cooking in the air fryer? The scones are done when they have a firm exterior and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. They typically take about 12-15 minutes at 350°F, but air fryers can vary, so it’s good to start checking a bit earlier.

Can I use a different frosting instead of cream cheese frosting? Absolutely! While cream cheese frosting is traditional for red velvet, you can use a simple vanilla glaze or even serve them plain.

How do I store leftover Air Fryer Red Velvet Scones? Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. You can reheat them in the air fryer or microwave.

Can I freeze these scones? Yes, you can freeze them. Wrap each scone individually and store it in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature before serving.

Is it necessary to use buttermilk in the recipe? Buttermilk adds a slight tang and helps with the texture, but you can substitute regular milk with a little lemon juice or vinegar.

Can I add chocolate chips or nuts to the scone batter? Yes, you can add chocolate chips, nuts, or even dried fruit to the batter for additional flavor and texture.

How can I ensure my scones are tender and not too dense? Be careful not to overmix the dough, as this can develop the gluten and make the scones dense. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.

Can I make the dough ahead of time? Yes, you can prepare the dough, shape it into scones, and refrigerate overnight. Air fry them the next morning as per the recipe instructions.

What’s the best way to cut butter into the flour? Use a pastry cutter or two forks to cut the cold butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. You can also use a food processor, but be careful not to over-process.
