If your weeknight dinner rotation is in a rut, my Air Fryer Lipton Onion Soup Mix Burgers are about to fix that. One pound of ground beef, one packet of soup mix, and 12 minutes in the air fryer — that is the entire job. The Lipton onion soup mix dissolves into the beef and gives every bite that deeply savory, almost meatloaf-style flavor we all grew up loving, but with a crispy seared edge that only the air fryer can deliver.

I started making these on busy school nights when I did not feel like firing up the grill, and they have officially replaced the boring frozen patties in our freezer. They are juicy, they hold their shape, and the kids ask for them by name.

Why You’ll Love These Air Fryer Onion Soup Burgers

  • The flavor does itself. The seasoning packet brings dehydrated onion, beef bouillon, and just the right amount of salt. You don’t need to babysit a spice cabinet.
  • Faster than the grill. No preheating a grill, no charcoal. Air fryer to plate in under 20 minutes.
  • Juicy every time. Cooking inside the basket traps steam around the patty, so the burgers stay tender even at well-done.
  • Freezer-friendly. Patties freeze beautifully raw or cooked — instructions for both below.
  • Five real ingredients. Ground beef, soup mix, Worcestershire, salt, pepper. That is it.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients for air fryer Lipton onion soup mix burgers including ground beef, Lipton onion soup packet, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and brioche buns"
  • Ground beef: 80/20 chuck is the sweet spot for juicy burgers without grease pooling. Leaner blends work but can dry out.
  • Lipton onion soup mix: The dehydrated minced onion is the star here.
  • Worcestershire sauce: Adds depth and umami.
  • Kosher salt: Yes, even with the soup mix; it boosts the beef itself.
  • Black pepper: Freshly cracked if you have it.
  • Hamburger buns: Brioche or potato buns are my favorite.
  • Optional: sliced cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, and your favorite burger sauce

Heads up on salt: Lipton onion soup mix is already salty. Start with the ½ teaspoon listed and adjust at the table. If you are watching sodium, skip the added salt entirely.

How to Make Air Fryer Lipton Onion Soup Mix Burgers

Combining ground beef, Lipton onion soup mix, and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl.

Step 1: Preheat the air fryer: Set your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and let it run for 3 to 5 minutes while you mix the meat. A preheated basket is what gives you that crisp, browned exterior.

Step 2: Mix the patty mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Use clean hands or a fork and mix only until just combined — overworking the beef makes tough, dense burgers. The mix should look streaked, not pasty.

Shaping burger patties from the mixture and making indentations in the center.

Step 3: Shape and dimple the patties: Divide into 8 equal portions (about 2 oz / 57 g each — these are quarter-pound-friendly when you double the recipe). Shape into patties slightly wider than your bun, since they will shrink a touch.

Press a small dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb. This is the trick that keeps the middle from puffing into a meatball shape while it cooks.

Step 4: Air fry the burgers: Place the patties in the basket in a single layer with at least ½ inch between them. Cook at 375°F for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cook in batches if your basket is small — overcrowding equals steaming, not searing.

Step 5: Add cheese and toast the buns: If you want melty cheese, lay a slice on each patty during the last 1 to 2 minutes of cooking. To toast the buns, pop them cut-side up into the basket for the final 2 minutes (yes, on top of the patties is fine).

Step 6: Rest and assemble: Let the patties rest for 3 minutes before assembling — this lets the juices redistribute so they stay in the burger, not on the cutting board. Build your burger and serve hot.

Air Fryer Burger Doneness & Temperature Chart

Air fryer brands vary, so a digital meat thermometer is your best friend. Here are the internal temps to aim for:

DonenessInternal TempApprox. Air Fryer Time at 375°F
Medium-rare*130–135°F8–9 minutes
Medium140–145°F10 minutes
Medium-well150–155°F11 minutes
Well-done (USDA recommended)160°F+12–14 minutes

*The USDA recommends ground beef be cooked to 160°F. Cook to lower temps at your own discretion and only with high-quality, fresh ground beef.

How to Cook Frozen Patties in the Air Fryer

Made a double batch and froze some? Here is how to cook them straight from the freezer — no thawing required.

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
  2. Place the frozen patties in a single layer in the basket.
  3. Cook for 6 minutes, flip, and cook for another 6 to 8 minutes until the internal temperature hits 160°F.
  4. Add cheese for the last 1 to 2 minutes.

Total time from frozen: about 15 minutes.

Pro Tips for the Juiciest Burgers

  • Don’t overmix. Mix only until the seasoning is distributed. Lumpy is fine.
  • Use 80/20 ground beef for the best flavor and juiciness. 90/10 will work but be drier.
  • Make the dimple deeper than you think. A shallow dimple does not survive the cook; aim for about ¼ inch.
  • Don’t press the burgers while they cook — every drop of juice you squeeze out is flavor lost.
  • Let them rest. Three minutes off the heat is the difference between juicy and dry.
  • Cook in batches if your air fryer is small. A crowded basket steams instead of sears.
  • Check temperature, not time. Air fryers vary by 25°F or more between brands.
  • Storing: Store leftover Air Fryer Lipton Onion Soup Mix Burgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Make sure to let them cool completely before refrigerating to avoid excess moisture.
  • Freezing: To freeze, wrap the cooked burgers individually in plastic wrap or foil and place them in a freezer bag. They will stay fresh for up to 3 months in the freezer.
  • Reheating: Reheat the burgers in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes or until warmed through. Alternatively, reheat in a microwave for 1-2 minutes, but the texture may not be as crispy.

How to Store, Freeze, and Reheat

To store cooked burgers: Cool completely, then place in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

To freeze cooked burgers: Wrap each patty in plastic wrap or parchment, then store in a freezer bag for up to 3 months.

To freeze raw patties: Stack with parchment paper between each patty in a freezer bag. Press the air out and freeze flat for up to 3 months. Cook from frozen using the timing in the section above.

To reheat: Place patties in the air fryer at 350°F for 3 to 4 minutes, just until warmed through. Microwave works in a pinch (45 seconds), but you’ll lose the crisp edges.

Recipe FAQs

How long do you cook Lipton onion soup mix burgers in the air fryer? At 375°F, 10 to 12 minutes total, flipping once at the halfway point, gets you to a 160°F internal temperature for well-done burgers.

What temperature should I cook air fryer burgers at? 375°F (190°C) is the sweet spot. It is hot enough to sear the outside without overcooking the inside.

Do I need to add water like the box directions say? No. The box directions are for actual onion soup. For burgers, the moisture from the beef and Worcestershire sauce is plenty.

Can I use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef? Yes. Reduce the salt by half (poultry holds onto seasoning differently) and cook to an internal temperature of 165°F. Time is similar — 10 to 12 minutes at 375°F.

Can I freeze the patties before cooking? Absolutely. Stack raw patties with parchment between them and freeze in a zip-top bag for up to 3 months. Cook directly from frozen using the timing above — no thawing needed.

Why are my burgers shrinking so much? Two likely culprits: the patty was too thin, or you skipped the dimple. The dimple keeps the middle from doming and pulling the edges in. Also, very lean beef shrinks more than 80/20.

Can I make these without Lipton soup mix? Yes — use the homemade substitute above, or swap in a packet of dry ranch seasoning, beefy onion soup mix, or French onion dip mix for a similar savory profile.

How many burgers does one packet of soup mix make? One packet (1 oz) is the right amount for 1 to 2 pounds of ground beef. This recipe uses 1 pound and yields 8 small patties or 4 quarter-pounders.

Why is my burger dense and tough? The number-one cause is overmixing the meat. The second is overcooking. Mix gently until just combined and pull the burgers at 160°F internal — not 180°F.

Can I cook these in a Ninja Foodi or Ninja Foodi Grill? Yes — use the air crisp function at 375°F for the same 10 to 12 minutes. The Ninja Foodi Grill works on the grill setting at medium-high for similar timing.

Juicy, perfectly seasoned burgers made with just 5 ingredients in the air fryer. Ready in 17 minutes — no grill, no flipping a million times, no fuss.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef, 80/20 recommended
  • 1 packet Lipton onion soup mix, about 1 oz
  • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 8 hamburger buns

Optional toppings:

  • Sliced cheddar, American, or Swiss cheese
  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion
  • Mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, or burger sauce

Instructions

  • Preheat: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Mix: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, Lipton onion soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix only until just combined — overmixing makes tough burgers.
  • Shape: Divide into 8 equal portions and shape into patties slightly wider than your buns. Press a small dimple into the center of each with your thumb (this prevents puffing).
  • Air fry: Place patties in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them. Cook at 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
  • Cheese & buns (optional): Add a slice of cheese to each patty during the last 1 to 2 minutes of cooking. Toast buns cut-side up in the basket during the final 2 minutes.
  • Rest & serve: Let burgers rest 3 minutes, then build on toasted buns with your favorite toppings. Serve hot.

Equipment

  • Cooking Spray
  • Parchment Paper, optional

Notes

Notes (Pro Tips)

  • Don’t overmix. Stop as soon as the seasoning is distributed.
  • Check temp, not time. Air fryer brands vary by 25°F or more — use a meat thermometer. 160°F is fully cooked.
  • 80/20 ground beef is best for juicy burgers; 90/10 will be drier.
  • Cooking from frozen? Cook frozen patties at 375°F for 6 minutes, flip, then 6 to 8 more minutes until 160°F.
  • No Lipton on hand? Whisk together 2 Tbsp dried minced onion, 1 Tbsp beef bouillon granules, ¼ tsp onion powder, ¼ tsp garlic powder, ⅛ tsp celery seed, and a pinch of black pepper.
  • Want bigger burgers? Make 4 quarter-pound patties instead of 8 small ones. Add 2 to 3 minutes to the cook time.
  • Storage: Refrigerate cooked burgers up to 4 days. Freeze cooked or raw patties up to 3 months.
