Ingredients Needed
- Sweet Potatoes: Clean the outside of the sweet potato, since we don’t peel them. Choose sweet potatoes, about the same size.
- Olive Oil: You can also use melted butter, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil. This will help crisp up the sweet potato’s skin in the air fryer.
- Salt: Enhances the natural flavors of the sweet potatoes.
- Pepper: Adds a subtle kick of heat and depth to the dish.
- Herbs and Spices (optional): Aromatic rosemary, thyme, or other herbs and spices of your choice enhance the sweet potatoes’ taste.
How to Make Air Fryer Hasselback Sweet Potatoes
Step One: Start by washing your sweet potatoes. Then dry them off.
Step Two: Slice the sweet potato with slices (either use the tool or make the slices with a sharp knife about 1/4 inch.) Use olive oil, grease the potato, and add some sea salt.
Step Three: Place the sweet potatoes into the air fryer basket and set the air fryer temperature to 350 degrees F, and set cook time for 15-20 minutes. (air fryer setting) Remove when fork-tender.
Step Four: While the sweet potato finishes cooking in a small bowl, mix the melted butter with brown sugar, and when the potatoes are done, fill the cavities with the brown sugar butter mixture right before serving.
Hasselback Sweet Potato Recipe Tips
- Choose Uniform Sweet Potatoes: Select sweet potatoes that are similar in size to ensure even cooking.
- Thinner Slices Crisp Better: Thin slices will crisp up nicely in the air fryer, so aim for slices about 1/8 inch apart.
- Single Layer Cooking: Arrange the sweet potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Monitor Cooking Time: Keep a close eye on the sweet potatoes as they cook.
- Check doneness with a Fork: To test for doneness, insert a fork or knife into the thickest part of the sweet potatoes. If they are fork-tender, remove them from the air fryer basket.
- Adjust Temperature and Time: If the sweet potatoes aren’t as crispy as you’d like, you can slightly increase the temperature or cooking time during the last few minutes.
- Let Them Rest: Allow the sweet potatoes to rest for a few minutes after cooking.
How To Cut Hasselback Sweet Potatoes
Here are the few simple steps to make Hasselback Sweet Potatoes.
- Stabilize the Potato: Place a sweet potato between two wooden spoons or chopsticks. This prevents you from cutting all the way through and helps keep the potato intact.
- Make Thin Slices: Using a sharp knife, slice across the potato at 1/8 to 1/4-inch intervals. Cut down until your knife hits the spoons or chopsticks, stopping the slice. Repeat along the entire length of the potato.
- Gently Fan the Slices: Once cut, gently spread the slices apart to allow for even seasoning and crisping in the air fryer.
Baking Hasselback Sweet Potatoes In The Oven
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can make these in the air fryer oven, or regular oven.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and arrange the prepared potatoes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush the potatoes generously with olive oil or melted butter, making sure it seeps into the slices for even crisping.
- Bake for 45-60 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender inside and crispy on the edges, basting with more oil or butter halfway through for extra flavor and golden color.
How to Store the Leftovers
Storing leftover Hasselback Sweet Potatoes, will last for 3-5 days in the refrigerator. Allow the sweet potatoes to cool down, and then place them into an airtight container. Reheat in in the microwave, oven, or air fryer, until warmed.
