How To Make Air Fryer Dark Halloween Cookies

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture is pale, light, and airy. Beat in the egg and pure vanilla extract, continuing to mix until the dough is silky, well-combined, and perfectly fluffy.

Step 2: Gently fold in the dark cocoa powder, dry instant coffee, cinnamon, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Gradually incorporate the all-purpose flour on low speed, mixing only until a rich, dark cookie dough forms and no streaks of flour remain.

Step 3: Prepare the air fryer basket or tray by lining it with parchment paper.

Step 4: Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop 1-inch dough balls into the air fryer basket, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Gently press the orange M&M’s and spooky candy eyeballs into the tops of each ball for a festive finish. Set air fryer temperature to 320 degrees F (160°C) and set cook time for 4-7 minutes until the edges are set but the centers remain perfectly soft.
Step 5: Carefully remove the cookies from the air fryer and allow them to rest in the basket or on a cooling rack. The centers will finish setting and firm up as they reach room temperature, resulting in a perfectly fudgy texture.

Air Fryer Dark Halloween Cookies Recipe Tips
- Use Dark Cocoa Powder: For that striking “black” Halloween look, use Dutch-processed or “black” cocoa powder specifically.
- Don’t Overbake Them: These cookies will look soft when the timer goes off, but they firm up perfectly as they cool.
- Room Temperature Ingredients: Ensure your butter and egg are at room temperature for a smoother, more aerated dough.
- Use Parchment Paper: Line your air fryer basket with perforated parchment to prevent the dough from sticking to the grates.
- Chill the Dough: If your kitchen is warm, chill the dough for 15 minutes to prevent the cookies from spreading too thin.
- Space Them Out: Leave at least two inches between each dough ball to allow the air to circulate and the cookies to spread.
- Add Eyeballs Later: If your candy eyeballs are melting, press them into the cookies immediately after they come out of the air fryer.
- Customize the Mix-ins: Swap M&M’s for peanut butter chips or dark chocolate chunks to create different “spooky” flavor profiles.
Storing, Freezing and Reheating Instructions
- Storing Instructions: To keep your cookies soft and fresh, place them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. You can also add a small slice of white bread to the container to help maintain that “just-baked” moisture for longer.
- Freezing Instructions: For long-term storage, flash-freeze the cookies on a tray before transferring them to a heavy-duty freezer bag for up to three months. If you prefer baking on demand, you can also freeze the raw dough balls and simply add an extra minute or two to the air frying time.
- Reheating Instructions: To regain that gooey, fresh-from-the-fryer center, pop a cookie back into the air fryer at 300°F for just one to two minutes. Alternatively, a quick ten-second zap in the microwave will soften the dark cocoa base and melt the chocolate chips perfectly.

Air Fryer Dark Halloween Cookies Recipe Faqs
Can I use regular cocoa powder instead of dark cocoa? Yes, you can use standard unsweetened cocoa powder, but the cookies will be a lighter brown rather than the spooky “black” color. For that deep, dark appearance and a rich, Oreo-like flavor, Dutch-processed or black cocoa powder is highly recommended.
Why did my candy eyeballs melt in the air fryer? Some brands of candy eyeballs are more heat-sensitive than others. If you notice them melting, wait to press the eyeballs into the tops of the cookies immediately after you remove them from the air fryer while the dough is still soft and hot.
How do I prevent the cookies from sticking to the basket? Use a piece of perforated parchment paper specifically designed for air fryers. This allows the hot air to circulate through the holes while providing a non-stick surface for the buttery dough.
My cookies are still very soft after 7 minutes; are they done? Yes! Cookies in the air fryer will look slightly underdone and “puffy” when the timer goes off. They carry over heat and will firm up significantly into a fudgy, chewy texture as they cool on the counter.
Can I make the dough ahead of time? Absolutely. You can store the raw dough in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Just let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before scooping so it’s easier to handle.
