Ingredients Needed

Ingredients needed for Easy Air Fryer Babybel Cheese on kitchen table.
  • Babybel Cheese, approximately 8: Small, round, waxy-coated cheese, removed from red wrapper.
  • All-purpose flour: Lightly dust cheese before egg wash for better coating.
  • Salt: Essential seasoning to enhance the flavor of the coating.
  • Black pepper: Adds a necessary hint of savory spice to breading.
  • Large eggs: Creates wet mixture, helping breadcrumbs stick to cheese.
  • Water: Thins the egg slightly for a smoother, lighter coating.
  • Breadcrumbs: Provides the main, essential component for crunchy texture.
  • Parmesan Cheese, Shredded: Adds sharp, salty, authentic Italian flavor to crust.
  • Dried oregano: Classic Italian herb for savory, Mediterranean aroma and taste.
  • Dried basil: Sweet, aromatic herb, perfect pairing with tomato dipping sauce.

How To Make Easy Air Fryer Babybel Cheese

Place coated Babybel Cheese in the air fryer basket.

Step 1: In one bowl, mix the flour, salt, and pepper. Whisk together the egg and water in a second bowl. For the third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, oregano, and basil.

Step 2: Place a cheese round into the flour mixture, coating both sides. Dip it in the egg wash, let the excess drip off, then place it into the breadcrumb mixture. Flip and pat so the coating adheres to all sides. Place on a baking sheet and repeat until all of the snack cheese is coated. Then, place the pan in the freezer and freeze until solid, about 1 to 2 hours.

Step 3: Spray your air fryer basket with olive oil. Set the FROZEN cheese into the air fryer, then spray the tops with more olive oil.

Step 4: Cook at air fryer temperature of 360 degrees F, air fryer setting, set cook time for 3-6 minutes. Flip with a pair of tongs, spray again with olive oil, about halfway through the cooking process. Note: This recipe will not work unless the cheese is completely frozen.

Easy Air Fryer Babybel Cheese Recipe Tips

  • Freeze first: You need to make sure that the snack cheese is frozen solid before air frying. Otherwise, the cheese will completely melt and burn, creating a giant mess in your air fryer.
  • Spray with oil: If you want the golden color on your Babybel air fryer cheese, make sure to spray generously with cooking spray.
  • Do not crowd your air fryer basket: Otherwise, the snack cheese will not crisp up correctly. Leave plenty of space between each round so the air can circulate.
  • Flip halfway: Depending on your air fryer, you may need to flip them halfway during the cooking process so they crisp and brown on both sides.

Recipe Variations

  • Gluten-Free Version: Use gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs. My favorites are 4C Premium Bread Crumbs or Michelle Farms Gluten-Free Italian Bread Crumbs.
  • Keto or Low-Carb Options: Use grounded pork rinds or Appel Foods-Nut Crumbs, which are sugar-free and low-carb, in place of the breadcrumbs. Be sure to use the appropriate flour substitute as well.
  • Seasonings: I love adding some hot sauce or cayenne pepper to the egg mixture for some heat. You can also add finely chopped fresh herbs instead of dried to make these pop in your mouth.

Easy Air Fryer Babybel Cheese Recipe Faqs

Do I have to freeze the cheese first? Yes! Freezing the unwrapped cheese for about 60 minutes firms up the interior. This gives the breadcrumb coating time to get crispy and set in the air fryer before the cheese melts completely, which helps prevent it from oozing out.

What temperature and how long do I cook Babybel in the air fryer? Temperature: Set your air fryer to 360°F. Time: Cook for 5 to 7 minutes.

Do I have to remove the wax coating? Yes, you absolutely must remove the entire red wax coating before preparing or cooking the Babybel cheese. The wax is not edible and should be completely peeled off before you start the breading and air frying process.

Can I bake these instead of air frying? Yes, you can certainly bake the breaded Babybel cheese instead of air frying them, though the cooking time and texture will be slightly different. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and bake the cheese on a parchment-lined baking sheet for approximately 8 to 10 minutes, flipping once halfway through, until the crust is golden and crispy.

How do I make the breading stick without it falling off? The best way to make the breading stick is by using a classic three-step dredging process: first coat the cheese in flour, then the egg wash, and finally the seasoned breadcrumbs (Panko works best)

What should I dip Air Fryer Babybel in? These crispy cheese bites are fantastic dipped in warm marinara sauce, ranch dressing, or even a sweet-spicy jam.

Can I use other types of cheese? While you can experiment with other cheeses like small mozzarella balls, ensure they are dense and firm, or the cheese is likely to ooze out quickly.
