Ingredients Needed For Air Fryer Homemade Spanakopita:

Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below, in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information.

  • Olive Oil: Used to sauté the filling and brush the phyllo layers, olive oil imparts a fruity, peppery note and helps achieve that golden, crispy exterior.
  • Garlic: Minced garlic infuses the spinach with an intense, aromatic kick, enhancing the overall savoriness of the dish.
  • Spinach: Fresh spinach, when wilted down, forms the heart of the filling, offering not just a lush green color but also a wealth of nutrients and a subtle, earthy flavor.
  • Cottage Cheese: Adding cottage cheese to the spinach filling provides a creamy, mild, and slightly tangy flavor that complements the spinach beautifully. It’s also a fantastic way to incorporate more protein and calcium into the dish, making it a healthier option without sacrificing the creamy texture that indulges spinach pie.
  • Feta Cheese: Crumbled feta cheese adds a creamy, tangy element quintessential to Spanakopita, balancing the spinach’s mildness with its briny depth.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Sprinkling Parmesan cheese over the top of the spinach pie before air frying adds a nutty, salty, and umami-rich layer that elevates the overall taste. As it melts and browns, Parmesan creates a deliciously crispy crust that contrasts wonderfully with the soft, flavorful filling inside.
  • Eggs: Beaten eggs bind the filling ingredients together, ensuring the mixture is cohesive and adds richness to the texture.
  • Dill and Parsley: Fresh dill and parsley add a burst of color and a fresh, herby flavor that brightens the entire dish, complementing the spinach and feta beautifully.
  • Salt and Pepper: Essential for seasoning, salt and pepper enhance the natural flavors of the spinach, cheese, and herbs, making the filling taste just right.
  • Phyllo Dough: The key to Spanakopita’s iconic texture, phyllo dough layers become irresistibly flaky and crisp when air-fried, providing the perfect contrast to the creamy filling.
  • Olive Oil Spray: Utilizing olive oil spray to coat the pie or the air fryer basket ensures a crispy, golden exterior without excessive oil. This method significantly reduces the overall fat content while still achieving that desirable crispiness, and it imparts a subtle, fruity flavor that olive oil is known for.

Pro Tips

Creating the perfect Air Fryer Homemade Spanakopita requires a blend of technique, ingredient selection, and timing. Here are some pro tips to ensure your spanakopita turns out deliciously crispy and flavorful every time:

  • Work Quickly with Phyllo: Phyllo dough dries out fast. Cover the sheets you’re not currently using with a damp towel to prevent them from drying and becoming brittle.
  • Seal Edges Well: To prevent the filling from leaking out during cooking, ensure the edges of your spanakopita are sealed well. A light brushing of water or olive oil can help fill them effectively.
  • Preheat Your Air Fryer: Always start with a preheated air fryer to ensure your spanakopita cooks evenly and becomes perfectly crispy.
  • Don’t Overcrowd: Place the spanakopita in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they don’t touch. Cooking in batches may be necessary, but it ensures even air circulation and crisping.
  • Use Olive Oil Spray: A light spray of olive oil on the spanakopita before air frying can enhance the golden color and crispy texture without adding too much fat.
  • Adjust Seasonings: Taste your spinach and cheese mixture before adding the eggs so you can adjust the seasonings to your liking. Remember, the feta cheese will add saltiness.
  • Cool Filling Before Assembly: Allow the spinach mixture to cool before adding to the phyllo dough to prevent it from becoming soggy and difficult to work with.
  • Experiment with Filling: Don’t be afraid to add different herbs, cheeses, or vegetables to the filling to suit your taste preferences. Spanakopita is versatile and can be customized in many delicious ways.
  • Keep an Eye on Cooking Time: Air fryers can vary in cooking times. Check your spanakopita a few minutes before the suggested cooking time ends to ensure they don’t overcook.
  • Serve Immediately: For the best texture, serve your spanakopita fresh from the air fryer. They’re at their crispiest and most delicious when hot and fresh.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to making the perfect Air Fryer Homemade Spanakopita, bringing a taste of Greece to your table with a modern, healthier twist.

Can I use frozen spinach instead of fresh? Yes, you can use frozen spinach. Just make sure to thaw it completely and squeeze out as much water as possible to prevent the filling from becoming too soggy.

How do I prevent the phyllo from tearing? Keep the phyllo dough covered with a damp cloth when not in use to prevent it from drying out and becoming brittle. Work quickly and gently when handling, and spray or brush each layer lightly with olive oil to keep it pliable.

Can I make spanakopita ahead of time? You can prepare the spanakopita and store them in the refrigerator for a few hours before cooking. For more extended storage, assemble them, then freeze them on a baking sheet before transferring them to a freezer-safe bag. Air fry directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.

How do I know when the spanakopita is done cooking? The spanakopita is done when the phyllo dough is golden brown and crispy. Cooking times may vary depending on your air fryer model, so check a few minutes before the suggested cooking time.

Can I use other cheeses besides feta? While feta cheese is traditional in spanakopita for its tangy flavor, you can experiment with other cheeses. Ricotta or cottage cheese can add creaminess, while Parmesan or Pecorino can offer a sharper taste.

Is it necessary to preheat the air fryer? Yes, preheating the air fryer ensures that your spanakopita starts cooking at the correct temperature right away, promoting even cooking and optimal crispiness.

What can I serve with spanakopita? Spanakopita can be served as an appetizer, snack, or light meal. Pair it with a Greek salad or tzatziki sauce, or enjoy it alone.

How do I store and reheat leftovers? Store leftover spanakopita in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for a few minutes until crispy and heated.

Can I make spanakopita in the oven instead? Yes, you can bake spanakopita in a preheated oven at 375°F until golden brown and crispy, which usually takes about 20-30 minutes. However, using an air fryer can provide a quicker and crispier result with less oil.
