What Are Popovers?
Popovers are light, hollow, and airy pastries that puff up dramatically during baking, creating a crisp exterior with a soft and fluffy interior. They are made from a simple batter of flour, eggs, milk, and salt and are traditionally baked in specialized popover pans or muffin tins with deep, narrow cups.
Popovers are characterized by their distinctive shape, which resembles a tall, cylindrical muffin with a crisp, domed top. They are often served as a breakfast or brunch item, accompanied by butter, jam, or honey, but can also be enjoyed as a savory treat filled with ingredients like cheese, herbs, or vegetables.
The key to achieving perfectly risen popovers lies in the high air fryer temperature, making them ideal for air frying.
The air fryer causes the batter to “pop over” the sides of the pan, resulting in the characteristic hollow center and towering height.
Popovers are a popular baked good in American and British cuisine. They are valued for their light and airy texture, versatility, and simple yet elegant presentation. They are a delightful addition to any meal or occasion, whether served as a side dish, snack, or dessert.

Remember the step-by-step directions and detailed ingredient list are below in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the post, as well as the nutritional information.
- Flour: Flour is the main ingredient in popovers. It provides structure and volume to the batter, resulting in the characteristic puffiness when baked.
- Eggs: Eggs act as a binding agent and help to leaven the batter, contributing to the airy texture of the popovers.
- Milk: Milk adds moisture and richness to the batter, resulting in a tender crumb and enhancing the flavor of the popovers.
- Salt: Salt enhances the popover’s flavor and balances the batter’s sweetness.
- Butter: Butter adds richness and flavor to the popovers and contributes to their crisp exterior.
- Cooking Spray or Oil: Greasing the popover pan or muffin tin with cooking spray or oil helps prevent the popovers from sticking during baking and facilitates easy removal.
- Optional Ingredients (e.g., cheese, herbs): Optional ingredients such as cheese or herbs can be added to the batter to customize the flavor of the popovers to your liking, adding a savory twist to this classic treat.
How To Make Popovers In Air Fryer
Here is an easy air fryer popover recipe with step-by-step directions:
Preheat your air fryer to 330 degrees F (165°C) for 3-5 minutes. Whisk the flour, milk, eggs, salt, and melted butter in a large mixing bowl until smooth. The batter should be thin and pourable.
Generously grease the cups of a popover pan or a muffin tin with cooking spray or oil. Grease the sides and bottoms thoroughly to prevent sticking.
Fill each cup of the popover pan or muffin tin about three-quarters full with the batter. Do not overfill, as the popovers will expand during baking.
Carefully place the filled popover pan or muffin tin in the preheated air fryer basket. If your air fryer has a small capacity, you may need to bake the popovers in batches.
Air fry the popovers at 330 degrees F (165°C) and set cook time for 15-20 minutes or until they are puffed up and golden brown outside. Avoid opening the air fryer basket during baking to prevent the popovers from deflating.
Once the popovers are done baking, remove them from the air fryer and immediately transfer them to a wire rack to cool slightly. This helps prevent them from becoming soggy.
Pro Tips
Here are some pro tips for making air fryer popovers:
- Preheat the Air Fryer and Popover Pan: Ensure your Air Fryer and Popover Pan are preheated before adding the batter. This helps the popovers rise quickly and evenly.
- Use Room Temperature Ingredients: Use room temperature ingredients, especially eggs and milk, for better incorporation and a smoother batter.
- Do Not Overmix the Batter: Mix the batter until just combined. Overmixing can result in dense popovers rather than light and airy ones.
- Grease the Pan Thoroughly: Generously grease the cups of the popover pan or muffin tin with cooking spray or oil to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal of the popovers.
- Fill the Cups Correctly: Fill the popover cups about three-quarters full with batter. Overfilling can cause the popovers to spill over the sides and deflate.
- Avoid Opening the Air Fryer: Resist the temptation to open the air fryer basket during baking, which can cause the popovers to collapse. Trust the process and allow them to bake undisturbed.
- Cool Properly: Once baked, transfer the popovers to a wire rack to cool slightly. This helps maintain their crisp exterior while preventing them from becoming soggy.
- Serve Immediately: Popovers are best enjoyed fresh from the air fryer when they are still warm and crispy. Serve them promptly with your favorite toppings for maximum enjoyment.

These just didn’t work. Used silicone molds, they looked done, but had come up completely out of molds into dense popovers. Had no bottom at all. Baked for 25 minutes in well oiled molds. Sad, because I was looking forward to these.
Carole
I’ve not heard of these but they’d sound like Yorkshire Puddings. Are Poppers just another name for Yorkshires which are famous in the UK?
Barb
That’s because silicone molds aren’t hot, you have to cook them in metal.
